Bacterial vaginosis

‘Bacterial vaginosis’ is a very common condition in women. In fact, it is much more common than thrush. In the UK in 2007, more than 92,000 people attended a clinic because of bacterial vaginosis. If your genital area smells fishy, this is almost certainly the cause. It is an imbalance of the bacteria in the vagina. Its previous name was ‘anaerobic vaginosis’, and some medical textbooks still use this term.

What is bacterial vaginosis?

Every woman has many varieties of harmless bacteria in her vagina. In bacterial vaginosis, some of the bacteria multiply too much, so that more are present than is normal (especially Gardnerella and Mobiluncus bacteria) (New England Journal of Medicine 2005;353:1899–911). And the numbers of other friendly bacteria, especially the ‘lactobacilli’ type, are decreased. In other words, bacterial vaginosis is not an infection caught from your partner – it is due to bacteria that are normally present in the vagina.

Symptoms of bacterial vaginosis

  • The main symptom is a fishy smell in the genital area. You may notice that the smell is worse after sex and during your period.
  • There is usually a discharge, which is watery and greyish-white in colour.
  • Bacterial vaginosis does not cause soreness or irritation.
If untreated, bacterial vaginosis may possibly increase the risk of pelvic inflammatory disease (infection of the Fallopian tubes that lead from the ovaries to the uterus).

Why women get bacterial vaginosis

Putting antiseptic in your bath water, or using bubble baths, can make a bacterial imbalance more likely. Another cause is douching (squirting antiseptic or soapy liquid into the vagina). Some women douche the vagina because they think it is hygienic, but the opposite is true. The vagina cleans itself very effectively and douching makes infections more likely. Some research suggest that bacterial vaginosis is more likely in women who smoke, or who eat a high-fat diet (Journal of Nutritrion 2007;137:2128–33).

What you should do about bacterial vaginosis

If you think you have bacterial vaginosis, you need to see your doctor because the treatment, an antibiotic called metronidazole, is available only with a doctor’s prescription. Metronidazole cures the problem in 90% of women, but causes an unpleasant metallic taste in the mouth, though this disappears after the treatment is finished. It can also cause a slightly nauseous feeling. You should not drink alcohol while you are taking it. Metronidazole is usually prescribed as a tablet taken by mouth, but a gel form that is inserted into the vagina is sometimes used. Clindamycin vaginal cream is another possibility.
If it comes back. Unfortunately, the cure may not be permanent. The symptoms return in about half of women. In this situation, there are various possible courses of action.
  • See your doctor again for a repeat of the metronidazole treatment, or to try another antibiotic. Make sure you take all the prescribed medication; a research study has found that bacterial vaginosis is most likely to come back in women who did not take the whole course of antibiotic treatment (Annals of Internal Medicine 2008;149:20–28).
  • Try acetic acid vaginal jelly, which you can buy from a pharmacy without a prescription (such as Aci-Jel or Balance Activ). These restore the natural acidity of the vagina, which may encourage a return to the natural balance of bacteria. It is not known whether or not they damage condoms and contraceptive diaphragms.
  • Try yoghurt. Make sure the container says ‘live yoghurt’, because this contains live lactobacilli bacteria. It is the friendly lactobacilli bacteria that are reduced in numbers in bacterial vaginosis. Gently smear a small amount of yoghurt over the vulva (the area around the opening of the vagina), and also put some inside the vagina. The easiest way to do this is to use a tampon with its applicator. Push the tampon back inside the applicator so you have a space for about a teaspoonful of yoghurt. Then insert the tampon in the usual way, which will push the yoghurt into the top of the vagina. Remove the tampon an hour later. Do this twice a day for a week. According to the medical journal Bandolier, which looks at the scientific evidence for treatments, some research has shown that women using yoghurt treatment felt their symptoms were improved (
  • If you have an intrauterine contraceptive device (‘coil’) and bacterial vaginosis is very troublesome, consider having the device removed. Bacterial vaginosis is more common in women using this type of contraception.
  • Stop smoking, as smoking seems to be linked with bacterial vaginosis.
If you have a partner. Your partner does not need to be treated, even if you keep getting bacterial vaginosis. There is no scientific evidence to suggest that treating your partner makes a difference.
If you are planning pregnancy. In the past, bacterial vaginosis was thought to be just a nuisance, but not harmful in any way. There is now evidence that it doubles the likelihood of a premature birth. So if you are intending to become pregnant, you should have bacterial vaginosis treated beforehand. If you have had premature labor in the past, your doctor will probably test you for anaerobic vaginosis during your pregnancy and treat you with antibiotics if necessary (Annals of Internal Medicine;148:220–33).

Hello everyone I've been doing a self treatment of my bv because doctors don't seem to help and I must say IT'S WORKING!!! Twice a day I take a bowl and fill it half way up with hot to warm water and put a cup full of sea salt in it let it dissolve but don't take too long or your water will get cold and you sit on top of the bowl so that your pelvic area is submerged in there you do 10 minutes and then quickly rinse the bowl out and repeat it all over for another 10 minutes and you do this for about 6 days... A treatment I found on YouTube and is has been the only thing that has helped me good luck ladies ❤❤❤

I've vaginal ulcers. I've been taking medication for 2 months but it didn't disappeared..what's the cause?

Hi! Im a 14 year old female. Since 5th grade I've had vaginal problems. It was a loud feshy smell at one point , but I tried sleeping without panties and the smell became less noticeable. I never told my mom about the problem because of not wanting to feel embarrassed. Once I got older (Around the age i am now) i told her the uncomfortable problems I was having. The next day I tried a 7 Day Treatment for yeast infections (from walmart) it didnt work so i told my mom. I went to the doctor and they gave me a pink pill that cures all yeast infections "once and for all" that didnt work... We went again and i received some white pills to take for a week they were big white pills . The pills worked! I Was very excited. Until one day we relocated to another state and i didnt get a chance to shower and the problem came back !! I went to a clinc twice more in the new state. When i went to the clinic the first time the doctor tested me for everything possible and i came back negative for everything including a yeast infection. The doctor told me she didnt smell anything and everyone assumed i was fine. I've expressed several times there's a unpleasant smell along with itchy bumps, but everyone seems to bypass the "unpleasant smell" and try to go towards the itchy bumps .. Maybe because they're more common . The second time that I went the clinic (a different one) I was given cream for my itchy bumps. It helped for awhile and ... The bumps were back again. Does anyone have an idea of what could be the problem or what I could use to cure it? Ive had it too long and i just want to feel fresh for once.

Just been told I have bacteria in vagina. I'm starting anti biotic tomorrow. Been with partner for under a year. Before that I didn't have a partner for 6years. After we have sex he gets sore and urinating can be to painful for him.He can be sore for up to 2 days. I wasn't experiencing much discomfort. But since I had the smear and swabs I'm now permanently feeling stingy/itchy,sore. The doctor said it has nothing to do with my partner. So what's causing this? I'm worried about starting antibiotics cause of stories I've heard. Like I said before, I wasn't really experiencing any symptoms.

Posted by Optional on 26/08/2015 at 05:51

I was on Metronidazole 500mg tablets 2 times per day for BV. I noticed all my symptoms went away in a little over a week. About the second day after finishing my prescription I started my period. My period was normal. Now it's been about 2 weeks since I completed my antibiotic and I have thick white discharge with a little itchiness and irritation some odor. Could this be the bv coming back or possibly a yeast infection which is a symptom from antibiotics? Please help me ease my mind.

what if I feel that am itching during the hot weather only but when it's during the cold season I don't feel irritated what kind of an infection is that?

Posted by Optional on 03/12/2014 at 03:23

I thought that it is worth sharing, I had BE and went to the doctor a few times trying to eliminate the problem. It kept coming back every time. They kept insisting that my partner was not the cause even though it was usually after sex that the symptoms would worsen. Being that NV is actually a lack of "good" bacteria in the vagina, I thought maybe the soap he is using to clean his pens was causing the BV. I insisted he start using water only. He listened, and it actually worked. I know this is true because now anytime he uses soap and doesn't tell me, I feel the symptoms all over again. I could actually guess when he uses soap, and he admits to it when I ask, apologetically of coarse. JUST STOP USING HARSH SOAP!

Hi could somebody please help me? I'm 14 and I seem to have this problem, it's difficult because I'm quite sporty (dance, gymnastics and yoga) and especially when I'm at my classes I can smell a fishy scent coming from 'down there'. I get it in between my periods but not usually during them. I don't want to tell my mum because we aren't that close and I'd be too embarrassed to go to the doctor. Is there anything I can do at home to make the smell go away (for example changing what I eat or carefully cleaning). A reply would be very helpful! :) thanks

I have, for the past six/seven months had a constant fishy odour coming from my vagina. In addition, I also sometimes have thick, white discharge. I have gone to the doctor for a BV check and it came back fine. I also took a trip to the GUM clinic, everything came back negative (thankfully!). I do not have thrush or a UTI. Yet, I still have a constant odour that I haven't had before. Although I am with a new partner, the smell started before he was in the picture. I made a change in my diet, are pots and pots of live yoghurt, I no longer smoke, I have no idea what it could be, please help! Is there anyway to make the smell less offensive? Get rid of it completely? There has to be a solution!

I'm 13 and I think that I'm experiencing this. My "discharge" has a light grey color and smells pretty bad. I can't exactly visit a doctor, so are there any treatments I can try at home?

Posted by justhelping on 01/11/2014 at 06:03

I've read some of the comments and here are a few thoughts...using heavy perfumed soaps, sitting in a bathtub and poor diet can all lead to the ph balance of your vagina to go off balance which can cause a yeast or bacterial infection. Sometimes taking antibiotics cause infections so ask your doctor to prescribe something for yeast infection when you have to take them if you are prone to infections. Contrary to people's belief you can have a yeast infection that smells terrible and mimics the symptoms of BV. I was tested for every infection and STD you could have by my doctor so she could prescribe the right treatment and we really thought I would have BV especially with the smell, turned out I had a yeast infection. Since it did not have the "Normal" signs of a yeast infection I think I had it for some time. The doctor prescribed 2 tretments of fluconazole. I took one pill and 3 days later took the second pill. I also had one supository of cream to place in my vagina and in about a week I was fine. So my strongest advice is to seek a professional opinion when it comes to these things. The information contained here is very informative and can be used as a guide to speak to your doctor or parent. Before I went to the Doctor and was diagnosed, just from reading lots of information like this I really thought I had BV but I didn't! So please talk to your Doctor and for you young people speak witb your parents. Lots of women get infections it's normal so don't feel dirty or embarrassed. Look how many women are seeking advice it happens everyday.

Posted by justhelping on 01/11/2014 at 03:23

To nqobile, its possible the antibiotics you took to cure the BV caused a yeast infection. You might need to try treatment for yeast.

Hi, so I am scared just a little, I am 14 and never had my period before but recently I found light brown discharge in my underwear and it has a weird kids metallic fishy smell, is this something that I should see a doctor about? Thanks

Posted by Optional on 24/09/2014 at 05:27

If you are prescribed with antibiotics for bv or anything else for that matter, make sure you take good probiotics too. It is very important as metronidazole and other antibiotics also kill good bacteria. I wish I knew this when I was prescribed antibiotics as I went on to develop leaky gut which has affected my breathing and I have has to stop working for 9 months so far because of it. Gut Dysbiosis (imbalance of bacteria) causes many problems so do your research before taking antibiotics. The ones I take are Biokult or culturelle. I have finally cured myself but it took me 10 years and a lot of trial and error to get there. I didn't believe diet would help so I resisted trying it. But because I have been very unwell I decided that I would do anything to get better and gave it a to. I managed to get rid within 6 months by changing my diet to include a lot of veg and some fruit, Avoiding sugar as much as possible and taking probiotics.

These spots are very itchy and I am very worried I don't want to tell my parents but if its something serious then I'm going ti have to I suppose!

Posted by Monika on 08/07/2014 at 05:26

Well I wanted to tell you that my vagina smells weird and I'm afraid that the smell will never go away and afraid it will affect me when I get older and want to have kids. Also I wanted to say that theirs this nasty discharge coming from it to and it also smells to sometimes it's white and sometimes it's clear what should I do?

Posted by Damya on 08/07/2014 at 03:10

the woman's vagina is never supposed to have a smell you have good and bad bacteria in your vagina and it cleanses itself so if you are having a sushi smell or discharge you need to see your gynecologist if that is not possible go to the nearest emergency room let them know that you are having irritation vaginal irritationlet them know that you would like to be tested for everything they will test you and give you the proper antibiotics or medicine that you need to cheer this no woman is ever supposed to have a smell down there even while on or after your menstrual

I'm 13 and I think I may have this...thing... I believe that all the treatment things have to do with being older than I am...It's embarassing so I don't want to tell my mom,but if I leave it will it effect me in any way?

Posted by Random on 05/07/2014 at 09:38

So, I have NEVER had sex before, but I have had a "fishy" smell, I notice my pee is sometimes yellow, I get stomach pains, and my vagina is itchy. I am super scared and I know I have never done anything but I am too embarassed to tell my parents anything but I know I have to go to the doctor. So what should I do? I'm really scared it may be something serious.

I do not agree with the statement that says "Bacterial vaginosis does not cause soreness or irritation." Every woman is different, if it did cause a woman irritation I would Definitely recommend a full STI screening ( which would be the case for certain criteria met). Just to advise ladies that it is possible to have mild discomfort. Just to add also that other causes can be from having new sexual partners, having intercourse without a condom and the use of some contraceptive devices. I think you should definitely seek the help and reassurance of your GP. There has also been studies into the link made between PID and BV.

Hi I'm new to this website but I had light spotting barely enough only when I wiped. After I had sex with my partner it would happen and on one side of my ovary there felt like a small knot but it went away. A few days later I had a fishy smell I came to the conclusion it was bv. I am now 6 days late on my period and usually I my face breaks out and it's stomach has some minor cramps and my boobs are sore. I took a pregnancy test a few days ago and it was negative. Please someone help if they have any suggestions or advice on what it might be????

Posted by Optional on 11/06/2014 at 04:21

About a month ago, I had gotten Bacterial vaginosis for the first time. It was miserable. I got the antibiotic, took it, and it was cleared up no problem. A week later I got my cycle like normal. Well 1 day after that, I was feeling that slight itch, and this time I have a yeast infection. From what I hear, once it begins like this it's an ongoing struggle to keep both the yeast and bv away, it's just a vicious cycle. My problem is this time that I was diagnosed with a bad sinus infection at the same time, so my doctor wont prescribe me anything saying that the yeast will just come back until I'm done with the antibiotic, I get his point... but to just "live" with a yeast infection for 10 days is easy to say when you're a stupid man. So going on day 6 and I'm really bummed. This is just so depressing, I can't have sex with my husband or anything. I did go pick up some live probiotics that I started taking to hopefully get my body back in to some kind of order. The only reasons these problems arise is because your internal balance is thrown off. So hoping that will keep both away forever, but what I did for my yeast infection that seemed to work was sit in a shallow bath with 2 cups apple cider vinegar in it. Surprisingly this seems to give me some relief for about 16 hours.

My vagina smells really bad. After I wash it it seems to be ok. But like 30 minutes prior to the wash it smells like it did before. I'm very embarrassed. But my partner doesn't care all that much.

I have a thick white discharge but it doesn't itch it doesn't really smell but it might if I forget to take a shower one day. It's not a fishy smell though. I always had a good amount of discharge since I was 13 but I feel like the amount has gotten bigger this year. Me and my boyfriend have sexy probably 6 days out of the week and when we don't that's when I have a lot of discharge. What could this be? And what should I try to do?

I've been having this problem with bv for the past 3 months, I used metrogel and it seemed like it had worked, but after I had sex with boyfriend it came back, it was with a worse smell and my vagi started to itch, so I went to the doc again and got tested for chlamidia along with another dose of metro gel. I got back negative results for chlamidia and got a anti fungal cream, but 4days taking the 6 day cream I still had a bad itch. So what can be the problem if the doc said it's not an STD? I'm really afraid of what's going on with my boys

Ladies, there is a solution for chronic BV. You must first go to your doctor to be prescribed antibiotics. Once you finish your antibiotic cycle, immediately start taking acidophilus pills (take the recommended dose on the back of the bottle) as well as garlic pills. I promise, it WILL go away.

SIMPLE PREVENTATIVE MEASURE:: WASH VAGINAL AREA ONLY WITH DOVE UNSCENTED SOAP..( you can use body wash on other body parts though)..DO NOT SIT IN A BATHTUB WITH ANY KIND OF FRAGRANCE PRODUCTS...(it is the perfumes/fragrances that actually cause the bacterial infections.)

I keep getting bacterial vaginosos even after I have treated it with balance activ, it works while I am using it but as soon as I stop it starts up again. It is most embarassing as I have a new partner and he is very into oral sex, but I know I taste very sour like yogurt down below. Any answers from anyone would help!!

I had a very healthy reproductive system up until 2007. At this time I had been with only one sexual partner my entire life and do not know if he had been unfaithful during our time together. My gyno noticed I had developed ovarian cysts during this time I started having infections of BV. I was smoking cigarettes habitually at the time also. I was severely stressed and had many life changes occurring including the end of my first relationship. The BV treatment was ongoing first they tried clindimyacin then metrodozinole. Then repeated oral and vaginal treatments were prescribed. I started developing yeast infections due to the overuse of the antibiotics that also kill the good flora/bacterial in the vagina and stomach. My advice to anyone suffering from this is to first realize you are not at all alone and there are natural ways to fix yourself. The best start would be to avoid alcohol and cigarettes at all costs if possible for at least 30 days.... and limit sexual activity because each encounter changes your bodies PH levels. Eat plain yogurt as often as you can, drink cranberry juice often, and drink lots of water (at least 3 liters a day). Put your body through a serious cleanse if possible and take in only healthy foods and liquids. If you can't commit to a complete lifestyle change there are supplements that have helped me when taken daily: Oregano Oil, DHA Fish Oil, Echinacea/Goldenseal Liquid Drops, and Acidolphilus or a probiotic supplement. The probiotic is enhanced by the Oregano oil so at the very least take these two supplements together. The Echinacea will help improve your immune system function to fight off infection. They do sell in grocery stores by the Aci-Jel or Rephresh called Yeast Gard or Pro-B that you take orally daily which helped me but I'd say the vaginal treatment is the most effective... Vaginal Treatment - Buy empty vegetable capsules, buy multidolphilus or acidolphilus powder and fill the capsules yourself, and insert vaginally once a day, every day. If you engage in any sexual activity alone or otherwise treat yourself afterwards. Sex - use hypoallergenic or water based lube or my favorite is Organic Coconut Oil (smells good, tastes good and has NATURAL anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties). If you feel unclean at any point but were told not to Douche, use an empty sterile douching bottle or water bag and fill with distilled water only and clean yourself that way. Or distilled water and plain yogurt. You can use PH balancing Aci-Jel or Rephresh. Coconut Oil can also be used on the exterior of your vagina if you feel discomfort there not during intercourse. The week before your period and during is the most likely time to get an infection so be aware of your body because your PH levels are more likely to change with your hormones. Also look into Boric Acid capsules from your OBGYN/GYNO to initially clear out everything before acidolphilus treatment. I can't say that I don't still occasionally feel discomfort but I feel it's partly mental partly nerve damage because when I have had symptoms recently my test results for BV and yeast have come up negative. The most effective thing for me has been consistent use of vaginal acidolphilus inserts by far. Overuse of Boric Acid led me to have severe dryness and pain during intercourse so be careful.

I've had BV, Vaginal Yeast infections, UtIs.. And currently I'm suffering from both BV and vaginal warts.. The pain is sooo bad.. I left my vaginal problems untreated so long that I've lost feeling. I can't feel my vibrator inside my vagina, a lot of the time I can't feel my man in me, and usually all I feel is pain or numbness when even my finger enters.. I'm tired of not being able to enjoy the things I used to; now I'm not as interested in sex knowing I only do it for him or for the small hope I have left that wants to feel again.. Fishy smell, painful and swollen vag, numbness, and a wet white discharge.. PS: I lost feeling down there because of BV - :(

The odour was just awful, like decaying meat, the stentch could be smelt by family and friends at times, which makes you feel uneasy. The BV has never gone away completely,it keeps coming back, its been over a year

i went to the doctor about 1 month ago because i had symtoms of painful urination, and inflamed vagina and my vaginal glands were aldo swollen. small but film balls. he took a urination sample and did a chlamydia and gonorrhea test. both test came back negative and there was nothing wrong with my urine. he gave me antiboitics for the paiful urnination, it then went. 2 weeks later i started having smelly vaginal discharge upon intercourse i then went back to see the doctor who refured me to a nurse who then also took a urine sample and then asked me to come back in a few days for the results. i came back and she said that no further action needed to be taken but yet im still having smelly discharge upon intercourse. i am not pregnant as i've had 2 periods since my symtons started and im getting frustrated with my doctors, do you think that the cause of all my symtoms could be bacterial vaginosis?

After having sex i have had lower stomach pains, random heat flashes that last only a half hour and now my inner thighs hurt. What does all of this mean? I started my period when i was twelve years old and it has ALWAYS been irregular, some times itll be monthly and others itll be every other month or so. I have never been on birth control. When i had sex for the first time, my bf used a condom. What does all this mean? Please help me

Posted by Extremely frustrated on 22/12/2011 at 03:26

I'm 16 and I've had BV for a while now. I told my mom about a month ago and she got me Metronidazole and it worked for a bit after I finished it, and im also using this summers eve cleanser thing(not a douche) its just like a wash thingy. And it doesn't smell. But when I go to school, I notice that because of the tightness o my pants and the humidity it traps in there it smells again. So I starte taking the pill again, and I finished it two days ago. I'm on my period, sorry if it's tmi, and I was curious to see if it will smelled. When I pull my panties down, no it doesn't smell. But if you get close enough( again sorry if tmi) to the pad, you can smell it. I'm extremely frustrated because I do have a boyfriend and I wanna get intimate with him (not sex) but just intimate and I can't without worrying that he's gonna smell it and be repulsed. Once I'm done with my period I'll see if it still smells, if it does I guess I have to tell my mom. But I'm so frustrated because it won't go away. Why the fuck do I have to deal with this? :/ it's terrible and it makes me wanna cry :(

Posted by D on 21/12/2011 at 12:51

I've had a problem downstairs ever since I was about 11 I told my mum when I was about 13 and she brought thrush cream for me and I was all hopeful thinking I could be normal but no nothing changed so I took the pill that came with it and nothing I'm 15 now I've never been sexual with anyone because of this crappy problem and the doctors still can't figure out what's wrong with me, people over look this type of treatment and just throw pills and rubbish herbal remidies that don't even work at us I have to shower twice a day and wear panty liners constantly it gets me down, because unlike all my friends I'm too scared to get close to someone and for them to get personal with me in (that way) I know I'm only young but this sucks.

I used to get recurrent bv infections and I came to realize that antibiotics do more harm than good. I also used to get chronic urinary tract infections and I think my body has built a resistant due to my long term antibiotic use, so they no longer work for me. So for some of you it will take probiotics to restore the normal flora in your body once you get rid of the bad bacteria (by taking antibiotics, home remedies, etc). For others you may want to start using protection during sex if your not already. Sperm can raise the ph level in some women, causing vaginal infections. Vitamin D defiency, high fat diet, and smoking has been linked to recurrent bv infections. Just take the time to evaluate your lifestyle and maybe some of you will come up with a solution. Good luck everyone!

I have had this BV for over a year now. I have tried the Metronidazol tabs medication many times and it always comes back after 2wks and I haven't had sex to make it come back. I don't have hot baths or bathe in chorinated water. I have tried Inner Health Plus, and Primadophilus Reuteri which they recommend on another google page about BV. None of these things have worked for me. I have the discharge and get itchy at times, and inside my vagina it feels quite raw. I have had a full hysterectomy many years ago, and don't have my fallopian tubes or ovaries, and have been through surgical menopause. I am at a total loss of what to do now about my BV. I am at my wits end, I hate it so much, and I am a very clean person, and although I have a BF I would not want him anywhere near me down there whilst I have this problem. It is so uncomfortable and I like to wear panty liners also due to the discharge. It has really got me down. If you find a solution please please make it known to us on here. Thanks

I've had BV for 7 months now. I visited a doctor and prescribed Metronidazole, it went off but after having sex, my BV got back. I consulted a new doctor and I was prescribed to use Metronidazole suppositories, Metronidazole tablets and Lactacy Vaginal Gel. ALL THOSE WEREN'T EFFECTIVE FOR ME. Not to mention, they are very expensive. Last summer, I tried taking Amoxicillin for 7 days and then Metronidazole for another 7 days. My BV was 'cured' but I had unprotected sex again. My advice: when your BV gets 'cured' refrain from having sex for (idk) at least 6 months so you'll be sure that it's really gone. And then, use condoms next time. AND OH. I tried the home remedies that I read over the net. ALL ARE NOT EFFECTIVE FOR ME.

Ladies - most of these doctors have NO idea what they are talking about. EVERY time I had unprotected sex with my partner, I would get it! I got treated with Metronidzadole and Clindimycin from 250mg to 500mg daily for 7 days. I've been suffering from this for YEARS! Finally I decided to use condoms with my partner, and ever since it has NOT come back!!!!! They say it's not sexually transmitted, but by personal experience, I can say that IT IS!!! Just trust me and try it!!! As soon as you start treatment, use condoms going forward. Also, there's a product called "Refresh" that will help while you are being treated. They wont tell people this because they want us to waste our money on these antibiotics!!! Trust me! Oh, and BTW - I tried the whole yogurt and vinegar thing- IT DOESN'T WORK!

To all the young girls experiencing vaginal problems, Please know that you are not any differnt from any other woman, we all have these problems and it doesnt mean you are nasty or a slut or any of the negative things you are telling yourself. Seek treatment and be sure to take all of the medicine they give you and try the yogurt and the other gels mentioned in this article. you are not alone and there is treatment.

I was having reocurn bv and went to a clinic and was given the the metro gel and the doc said that if it returns to use peroxide. To do this she said to soak a tampond in peroxide with the applicator still intact and insert the tampond into the vagina for 10 min then remove. Do this times 7 days and should clear it up. I tried it and it works. Hope it works for u.

its bin 2 years already that i am experiencing this first i conclude its a yeast infection but later on turns to first 6 mos.i dont know what to do,i discharged a lot and its itchy, and the smell is so fishy ..I consulted an ob-gyne and the least that they can do is prescribe metronidazole and have vaginal gel,i tried it several times almost a year, but still monthly it always comes back...the situation getting worser and worser..i read a lot thru net because its not comfortable to discuss this to a friend and even to a really makes me stressed depressed because of b.v.but until finally i went to a faith healer and just by pressing my pulse, she told me that i have a bacterial infection, she told me to buy antibotic just to serve to lessen the burden i have, but still says that it will come back over and over again,so she gave me a herbal med.that will totally kills the overgrowth bacteria by boiling the trunk skin of banaba tree ang trunk skin of malunngay and drink it 2 glases a day..and now.....finally its over..the two years hell am experiencing is sharing this to evryone to overcome this disgusting b.v.

It may not be connected, but I find latex free condoms tend to reduce the chances of me getting any problems following intercourse. I doubt its the cause of these kinds of problems but the latex in condoms could just be another factor worsening an existing condition. Durex sell Avanti latex free ones. Always worth a try.

Will the fishy smell go away on it's own? Because I'm not sure if it's fish or not. But this started last month. A little bit after my period ended.

Hi,I'm 17 and I've had this strange discharge for about 6 years now! It just goes to show how much I am afraid of the doctors. The discharge is not fishy but still very unpleasant and it's not strong but i can smell it on my underwear. I always wear a panty liner and sometimes even a tampon because i get the discharge every day and it feels horrible if I don't have anything in to catch it. It's a creamy consistency and I think it sounds like BV. I have a doctors appointment for just over a week to talk about my period pains which are always bad every month. I'm overweight at a size 16 and I just know that the doctor is going to pick up on it. If it was a female doctor I was going to see then after reading all of these posts, I would possibly have bought this up also. I probably wouldn't be so embarassed if I went with someone who had the same problem...I know I'd feel a lot better. It sounds really really silly, but would anyone come with me? :)

Posted by Bacterial imbalance on 29/11/2010 at 01:16

it is right When the probiotics and the bad bacteria in the digestive track become unbalanced, an itchy rectum may result. A frequently reoccuring candida infection is also a sign of bacterial imbalance and therefore low stomach acid.

I keep getting a reoccurence of BV, and I keep getting treated each time, and always seem to fail. How can I reduce the amount of bacteria, that is present in my vagina to end this cycle. I have been suffering with this for a couple of years now, and I need to be directed to someone, who specialize in only BV, and guide me. I plan on having children in the near future, and want to be completely healthy and happy with my significant other, without consciously thinking of producing this awful infection. Please help me.

My GP just told me that my regular PAP was inconclusive, but that I had an increase in flora and that he believed I had BV. I do not have any smell, and although I have increased disharge, it is clear to white-ish. I have no pain, and no itching, and no smell at all. I don't think I have BV. But I am going to take the medicine anyhow. Better to be safe than sorry, I suppose. Is there anything else that can increase the "flora" without being BV?

I think there needs to be more done concerning bv, i find many women take antibiotics and it works for a while but comes back. There should be more done about it.

Hi there, Just wanted to post a comment to try to reassure some of the girls. I was diagnosed with BV and was treated maybe 4 times with antibiotics (which caused thrush!) and it never went away- until I started using the contraceptive injection. It is known to promote vaginal dryness, so within a couple of months I was normal again. Unfortunately I have just gone back on the pill and within 5 days I have BV back....still at least I know the injection can help. Also, to the guy who has written in about his girlfriend being upset- I went through that too and I found it very painful to have sex for a long time even after being cured as it was a psychological problem being embarrassed about what I sound lovely so I'm sure she will be OK with time and lots of love from you. Try using lots of lube too...

Posted by Optional on 26/07/2010 at 05:09

I am currently tackling same problem as yours. very embarassing but you need to see your obgyne inorder to receive proper diagnosis and treatment. i am currently taking flagyl and a vag suppository for two days already and it felt a lot better. The doctor will take a smear test from you and from there they will know what is the right treatment. I did have my pap test taken first recommended by an Internal Doctor because the Obegyne was not available that time. need to wait 7 days after for the result. Before the result was released, I consulted our Obegyne and she prescribe the antibiotics to me plus the suppository and told me to provide to her the papsmear result if available. Generally obegyne knows the right treatment even w/out the test results. Gather yourself and face the doctor. it will only take hours and you will have instant relief

I'm a young man who has had frequent oral sex with my girlfriend. More often than not, I am beginning to get that acidic taste in my mouth. Even when I'm not participating in oral sex. I don't know if this is serious or not. Due to my younger age, I rather have this problem solved quietly.

I'm happy to know what it is that's happened to my body, but i can't understand why everybody is ashamed to tell their parents OR their doctor, I told my DAD (you know from the male species) and he listened. We went to walmart and he stood next to me while I looked at the vaginal infectoin creams, he'll even take me to the doctor. So if my dad (from the male species lets not forget) was understanding I think so will your mothers and doctors. :)) Just a thought

YAYYY!! ;-) going to book an appointment with my doc now and get this nasty smell sorted once and for all!! x

I dont know what to do now, as i'm sure this cannot be normal. but i know how embarrasing it can be, i couldnt tell my mum, so after 4 months just phoned my doctors and asked to see a female doctor. although i dont have a proper answer to my problem, she was lovely and i'm so glad i went, as soon as you've done it you'll feel so much better, its better to go through 10 mins of embarrasment and get it sorted!

For all you young lady who think you have BV and are scared to go to your doctors or parents to talk to them about it. My best advice is to talk to them. I have BV for about a month now and I was to scared to talk to my doctor or mom about it but it ended up getting so bad one night I had to make an appointment with my doctor. I told the hospital I wanted a female doctor to check me out and since its your body the doctors has to do what you want.(At least in New York State they do) But the doctor said I had BV and put me on an antibiotic called Metronidazole. For me I had to take one 500mg pill twice a day for a week. During that week it still itch. I am not done with the pills I still have about 5 more to take. But I want to know if BV can make your period late or make you miss it? I due any day but its not here yet. I know for a fact I am not prego. Anyone has any answers? Thanks

Ew ew ew ew I've had this for so many years! It seems to have gotten worse over the past couple of years, to the point where I can't sit anywhere without my legs crossed and I'm constantly paranoid that others can smell me, and I isolate and don't date because I'm too ashamed to have sex - I sit at home night after night watching television. I'm 20!!! So I'm relieve to hear that I'm not the only one, but also more than a little disheartened to learn that so many people have been treated and have had their symptoms come back. I've been too ashamed to tell even my closest friends, let alone a doctor. I'm going to try the Yakult thing, because we have that in our country too, and if that doesn't help I may go to the doctor. This is so horrible, it just seems so unfair that others can seemingly have no problems down there, while I go around stinking of dead fish. Thank God I'm not the only one

Posted by Anonymous on 26/06/2010 at 01:22

I've had this problem for a while so I decided to visit a Gyno and she gave me two large pills that she said to take at the same time. It lasted for a few months (About two or three) and then it came back. Now I can't go back to the Gyno because she is all booked up and I'm embaressed to go to my regular docter because he's some old guy and I just don't feel comfy talking to a man about something like that (No offence guys). And I'm all worried because in a few years I'm going to be getting into things like sex. (Hopefully not, but you never know) and I'm afraid to talk to my mom again, What should I do? I'm so embaressed because I'm always itching in public places.

Posted by Bec on 20/06/2010 at 05:45

Try an probiotic drink, we have one called Yakult here is Australia, and I've noticed that my discharge gets more odourous when I dont take it, I was drinking it once a day, and it helped a lot!!! I dont know if i have BV or not, im a bit embarresed to go see a doctor about it to, but Yakult works for me so I definately recemmend it to anyone else who has the same problem.

Posted by Optional on 18/05/2010 at 05:58

I went to my GP about it, and got antibiotics - co-amoxiclav or something like that. They had no effect whatsoever so I went back a few weeks later and was told there was nothing wrong. I disagreed, so later went back again and got different antibiotics, which didn't have any effect, so I went back again, and was advised to have a proper long discussion with a doctor about it, rather than just a swab and leave and pick up the prescription later. I now have another appointment to see if anything can be done about this infuriating problem.

I first discovered I had BV after suffering with flu like symptoms, back pain and then an awful discharge! My doctor said it was a bad bout and if their was no improvement within 24-48hrs, he would send me to hospital to have I.V antibiotics! Thankfully, there was improvement and I continued to finish the course. Almost 1yr later I had a similar episode, although not as severe, but unfortunately it was during a long bank holiday weekend, and so after NHS 24 advice attended an appointment at my local "out-of-hours" service, who then admitted me to the A & E dept.. When I was examined I was left feeling worse than before-not physically, but emotionally. The "on-call" doctor suggested I attend a GUM clinic and speak to my husband to ask him if he'd had sex with anyone else! I was absolutely devastated! I attended a clinic, where the staff could not have been kinder or more helpful. Both my husband and I had relevant testing-all returning clear, and being told to return at any time if anything else came up. This week I have again been suffering with similar symptoms, although the discharge slighlty different, and upon today's visit with a new Doctor, have been prescribed the relevant antibiotic, an explanation about the pH balance in the vagina and told that BV is not a sign of poor hygiene (possibly the opposite), nor is it a STD. I wish I had looked at your site earlier, it would have stopped me being so distressed, embarrassed, and doubting myself. The site is clear and concise, and easy to use...thank you.

after being prone to bv, i got so fed up of always taking antibiotics. i have found a remedy that works for me. all i do is open up a tablet of oral probiflora which contains the 'good' bacteria lactobacelli and insert some of the powder as high in vagina as i can. in a matter of hours the bad smell is gone.

i felt embarrassed to say for a long time i had this fishy smell to th point i thought my partner had cheated and gave me an std. i never knew this was common and also that i have an iud and have had it for a year! the same amount of time ive been getting this vb. thanx to this website i now know what i need to do and have my coil removed and find a different contraception. ive had repeat prescriptions for metronidazole which i think could be harmful if i keep takin it although ive never had side effects from it it is a strong antibiotic! thank you for your help as you have finally put my mind at ease.

Using a yogurt filled(about 2-3 tablespoons) turkey baster to gently insert plain yogurt works for my bv symptoms. Metronidazole treatments and acetic acid vaginal jelly didnt work for me without symptoms returning weeks later. After menstrual cycles, sex and simply wanting to feel fresh and secure, I use yogurt.

I had Bacterial Vaginosis for the first time in 1997. I was given metro pills, then it went away. Then in 2005 it reared it's ugly head once again and never went away. I have been dealing with this for almost 5 years without no breaks. I have yellow, brown, mucus-like or stringy like discharge. It varies. I am constantly irritated and itching. I have tried everything and nothing works. Doctors can't seem to help me. Metro pills, gel, Diflucan, yogurt, acidolphilus, rephresh. You name it, I tried it. I have to wear pantyliners everyday, change my underwear 2-3 times a day. The smell is sometimes fishy, but also sometimes a metalic, plastic odor or sour odor. It leaves odors on chairs, towels and clothes. This is ruining my life. I have been tested for everything and all stds and it was negative. No diabetes. I do have fibroids, but I had this problem before I was even diagnosed. Gynecologists think I am crazy. What more can I do? I can't spend the rest of my life smelling like fish. I am jealous of other women because they have a normal vagina, free of bad odors. I am jealous of men because they get to walk around free and clear with no worries of smelly discharge. Please help!

Once it even brought tears to my eyes and today we had sex and I noticed a fishy smell...up to today I've thought I've had a ovarian cyst then I thought maybe it could be gonnahera(however you spell it) but my discharge is clear wit a tiny bit of white. My bv won't go away! I tried all the medications. Metroidole and I was allergic to it. I got bumps all over my face and my hands and feet it was so weird. My hands and feet started peeling on the bottom and it was so nasty. My bv came back so I went back to the clinic and she gave me cream to put on for 3 days so I did. It worked for a while then it came back. I don't know what to do! I hate this so much I wish I could just have a normal vagina and not have to worry about this 24/7. Its so annoying..ugh!

i suffer with bv since having my 2nd child, it gets tiresome going back and forth to clinics and docters, having swabs then you have to wait for the result before you can be treated it anoys you and makes you so uncomfortable, im happy to have realised i can get treatment from else where now with out the wait, thank goodness.

I always feel like i have to pee as if i don't get all of it out when i urinate. Usually i have alot of white and clear slimy discharge with a bad garlic smell not fish smell what i do is rinse my vagina out should i be rinsing it out so often? I heard that only cold water is good for the insides of the vagina cause warm water causes yeast to build up.

Hi All After reading the comments I want to share my expereience of this and if any doctors are on this then please read and take note. I have had this degrading problem for about 6 months thougt it was washing powder, shower gel or even bath cream. I asked a mate and she had the same symptoms, we both went to the docs as we thought that we had caught a STI I even had a home test done for Clamidia (sorry about the spelling) it all came back fine. I went and saw a nurse and she took a swab said that they would call me if anything came up. I heard nothing so called them and they said was all ok few more months and I had to go back as the smell is sooo bad that my partner actually said have I washed today after we had sex this is not good I thought the nurse then decides to tell me that I had PLUS cells now what the hell is this I panicked I mean what with the Jade Goodey situation a girl of 24 is going to worry. I then saw a Doctor and she could not explain what PLUS cells are I then had another swab and all she said was that I have BV and then proceeded to talk to me about Good and Bad Bacteria as if I was stupid and that this is just a THING that women get if they wash to much I mean come on doctors how can you say that when you have this smelly awful thing you are going to wash. Now I have been given the anitbiotics so we shal see but if nothing works I am going further as this is somthing that we HAVE To live with RIGHT.

My fiance and I noticed a rawish almost fishy smell coming from my groin during sex. I had noticed the slight smell the day before but thought it was associated with the last day of my period.I had no discharge per se but started to treat myself for a yeast infection (monistat3 cream). Having read this site, maybe I have bv instead. I'm wondering if my misdiagnosis and treatment for yeast infection will adversely affect me.

Hello everyone. On reading this very useful information on bv I decided to share my story. I have been suffering on and off with bv for about a year and a half now. I have had four courses of metronitozole 2 aplicators of the clyndomycin and tried an anti biotic called tinidazole.... yet it comes back. It gets me down so much because when it flares up I cannot even sit on a seat without infecting it with stench. How embarrassing! Fed up I returned to me gp and he is now referring me to a gynocologist. I cant wait and hope and pray they can help me. I plan to try the natural 'live' yoghurt as this is knew advice. will let you know how I get on.

so, you guys tell me what you think. i was in a relationship with a guy. lots and lots of sex. then all of sudden BV. i got both of us treated with oral antibiotics. it went away and we broke up. a few weeks later, we were back together. sex- well yea. of course, BV back in action. he admitted that his ex had it at some point. (just what every girl wants hear). then he tries to tell me that he thinks it must be in his mouth. we both go back through round 2 of antibiotics. i got rid of him but have always wondered if maybe a guy can have this @$%^ growing in the mouth. anyone ever heard this? any doctors on that might have thought? mine pushed me off to his nurse who was so floored i asked that i never got an answer.

I got back from the GUM clinic today and have been diagnosed with BV and also a urine infection. This is the first time i've had it. I've been ill with chest/throat infection for the last week or so and have been on amoxicillin since Thursday. On Friday i noticed pain when urinating and some vaginal redness - i have previously had thrush caused by antibiotics but this was definitely not the same!! I have had a change in discharge - discoloured (slightly yellowish?) but doesn't really smell. I was terrified that i had herpes or something terrible so am somewhat relieved to find it is only bv. If you have any of these symptoms just go the GUM clinic and get it checked. I must admit the examination was pretty painful - inserting the spectulum (?)was very uncomfortable due to the inflammation etc. I've been given 5 metronidazole tablets all of which i must take tonight. Hopefully this will resolve the problem. I have since noticed a couple of red bumps on my outer labia but am hoping this is just due to general irritation/infection in the area rather than anything more sinister...

Hi all sis commarades.. I been recently diagnosis with BV after a visit to a gayne. The results can be known. (where the doc take a cotton bud wipe on the liquid sample from ur vagina sent to the lab for testing). In fact I didnt know I had it. Was doing the normal cervival test - pap smear test that the result shows abnormal thus going into it further to check. The doc prescribe me something to put into the vagina for 3 days supposely to clear it. Anyway went for my pap smear again..hopefully normal results this time round. Anyway dear sis around, pls consult gayne who r more trained in woman body then normal doctors. They will suggest the several test etc to confirm n treat... Dun live in fear n worry....

Posted by Anonymous on 25/03/2009 at 03:32

One more thing......your doctor may or may not tell you that antibiotics will kill the good bacteria in our bodies, causing an imbalance in our system. Take acidophilus to prevent this! :)

Posted by Anonymous on 25/03/2009 at 03:28

Drinking acidophilus milk worked for me! You can also buy acidophilus pills in the health food stores (may be available elsewhere by now). I have yet to run into a doctor that suggests this very easy, and drug free, solution!

I don't douche, and I wipe myself the "right" way and wash regularly. Why is this happening to me? Sex is getting to be uncomfortable and embarrassing because of the smell. I was given some pills and it cleared up for awhile, but now the smell is coming back. What can I do?

For a few years now I have struggled with vaginal discharge and smell. My doctor says I am normal, but I beg to differ. I feel that I can have an odor and although this may sound silly...I have tasted myself and feel that I taste bitter. I'm not sure if I am just being paranoid because of the emotional abuse by my ex-partner or if I actually have a problem. I did have bacterial vaginosis re-occur for quite awhile, but was just tested and it was negative. I also find that the smell is unpleasent after I have sex with a new partner.

Posted by Anonymous on 30/12/2008 at 09:26

I have developed BV after having the coil fitted, although I also smoke and eat alot of fatty foods and wash twice a day with soap free products.Glad I have found out what the possible causes are as the fishy smell is so embarrassing especially after sex.Was pleased to know that BV is not a sexually transmitted disease. After taking my course of antibiotics I will definitely look at changing my diet and try to quit smoking for 2009.
