    Verrucas

A verruca (plantar wart) is a wart on the sole of the foot. It is the same as a common wart, but the weight of the body presses it into the foot, which can be painful.

Verrucas are slightly raised and circular in shape, with a thickened rim of surrounding skin. The surface may have black dots (‘pepper-pot’ appearance). There may be several verrucas or just one.

Sometimes verrucas form clusters of small warts, called ‘mosaic warts’ – these are usually painless. In children, verrucas tend to come and go quite quickly, but in adults they can persist for several years if they are not treated.

    How verrucas spread

Like other warts, verrucas are caused by strains of papillomavirus. There is lots of papillomavirus around, and many people carry it on the surface of their skin. It does not cause any harm unless it penetrates into the skin, where it can take hold and cause a wart. This is most likely to happen if the surface of your skin is already damaged, with tiny cracks.

Most people believe that verrucas are caught in the changing rooms of swimming pools and the pool surrounds, but only one scientific study has shown that people who use swimming pools regularly are more likely to get verrucas. Other studies have shown no link.

There is probably plenty of papillomavirus around swimming pools, particularly in the shower area. However, you are very unlikely to get a verruca if your skin is undamaged. If you want to minimize the risk, wear flip-flops in the shower area.

    What you might do

Decide whether it really is a verruca. They are easily confused with corns and calluses, which are thickened areas of skin caused by friction. Corns are often seen over hammer toes and where shoes press on the little toe, but they can occur on the sole of the foot just below the toes. Look closely at the verruca, using a mirror and a magnifying glass if possible. Corns and calluses have normal skin lines (like the lines used in fingerprints) over them, but the surface of a verruca is slightly lumpy without lines. If you are not sure, see a chiropodist or ask your doctor.

Do nothing. Just covering the verucca with a plaster and doing nothing might be the best option, for the following reasons.

    • Without treatment, verrucas almost always disappear within 2 years. Some go within a month or two. Treatments are inconvenient and can be uncomfortable.
    • It is possible that letting verrucas disappear naturally helps the body to build up immunity, making you less likely to have them in the future.
    • Most treatments involve rubbing the wart with pumice or an emery board. Some experts think this helps the virus to spread into nearby skin.
    • You do not need to worry too much about infecting other people in swimming pools and similar places, because the virus is probably already there.

Decide who should treat it. Decide whether you should treat the verruca yourself, or whether you should see a chiropodist. Do not try to treat it yourself if you have diabetes, or if you already have a skin problem such as eczema. Most chiropodists advise against do-it-yourself treatment, and prefer to be consulted when the verruca is small and easier for them to deal with.

Keep your feet as dry as possible. Papillomavirus can spread through wet, soggy skin to form a patch of mosaic warts.

Relieve the discomfort. Stick a ring-shaped foam pad round the verruca to take the pressure off it. You can buy these from pharmacists and they are sometimes labelled ‘for corns’.

Salicylic acid paint, gel or ‘verruca plasters’ can be bought from a pharmacist. Before using the paint or gel, soak your foot in warm water for 5 minutes, and then rub the surface of the verruca with a pumice stone. Do not overdo it. Carefully apply the paint and let it dry. Cover with a large sticking plaster. Repeat this treatment every evening until the verruca disappears, which may take 12 weeks. If it becomes painful, stop the treatment for a few days.

Verruca plasters are convenient. They are discs soaked in salicylic acid that you stick over the verruca and change every day. Some have built-in padding to deflect pressure from the verruca. Before applying the plaster, soak your foot and use pumice to rub some of the wart away. Put a piece of wide adhesive bandage over the plaster to make sure it stays in position.

Silver nitrate (caustic) pencil. If salicylic acid does not work, you can try a silver nitrate pencil. In the UK, you can buy this from pharmacies without a prescription. It gently burns the wart. Use it carefully according to the manufacturer’s instructions

A freezing aerosol is now available from pharmacies. It works in a similar way to the freezing treatment used by chiropodists and doctors, but does not reach the very low temperatures that their equipment achieves. Only one application is needed. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

Try a herbal remedy from a health shop. It is difficult to know whether these are effective, because most have not been fully investigated in scientific trials. Tea tree oil, applied twice daily on its own or mixed with garlic juice, is said to have an effect. A tincture made from Chelidonium (the Greater Celandine) is said to be antiviral and to damage wart cells.

    What you should never do

Do not try scraping it away with a corn knife. You could damage your skin and cause an infection. Also, the verucca will come back and others may occur nearby in the damaged skin.

What a chiropodist or your doctor can do

Chiropodists can check that you have a verruca and not some other problem, and they offer a range of treatments, including freezing (cryotherapy). Freezing tends to be less effective for verrucas than for common warts, and can be painful. It may be a good idea if you have mosaic warts, because these do not respond very well to salicylic acid. If you have a really troublesome verruca, your doctor might refer you to a hospital dermatology department for treatment.

I have tried gels, freezing at the docs and banana skins. ACV turned it all black but reallt hurt. I couldnt walk properly for 2 days. Not sure if it's gone but looking good.
Go swimming people, cover with clear nail varnish and it won't infect others.

I had veruccas when a child and got rid of them with Bazuka cream, but they don't make the cream now only gel. I have had a verucca for several years and have become so frustrated because the gel just sits on the top and dries so hard. I can't see how it can work, cos it doesn't sink into the skin. I have been crushing aspirin (salicycle acid, the active ingredient in bazuka)and mixing it in E45 cream. Its been taking a few weeks and consistency in applying it,but the verucca is getting smaller and smaller and I'm sure it will disappear completely if I persevere.

I have a huge phobia of feet and I went crazy when I found a small varucca on my toe. My lovley fella did a once only treatment that freezes it and now after only about a week and a half its on its way out. yaaaaay. I am so pleased as he had to pin me down to apply it. It was slightly uncomfortable, like someone holding an ice cube on my toe for 30 seconds, but its worth it to know that one treatment has worked and I dont have to worry about it anymore. I would highly recomend an over the counter freezing treatment. Also it saves me from worrying about spreading it to other people.

I have been suffering from extreme pain, on the heel of my right foot, for 8 months now due to a cluster of 8 verrucas. Tried every over the counter remedy and freezing treatment at my doctors.
I used to be an avid mountaineer but couldn’t wear walking boots for the pain. I stooped to using my partners opiate based pain relief which was meant for prolapsed disk treatment.
I contacted a podiatrist who, after removing layers of hard skin, recommended banana skin. Every night I apply a frozen piece of banana skin directly over the verrucas. Within 3 days I had stopped using pain relief and for the first time in 8 months was walking without a limp. 3 weeks later the verrucas have shrunk and can now manage walking in the hills again.
The skin around the verrucas is now translucent and the verrucas now appear to be raised up allowing me to rub them down with a emery board.
    I’ll keep all informed......

I had lots of verrucas on both my feet a few years ago now and tried various treatments, none of them worked. At the time I was working as a nurse in a private hospital and with my medical insurance was offered a course of radiotherapy at a Harley Street Clinic to get rid of them. I went three times and it got rid of all of them. Although now a few years later, i have two new verrucas. So annoying! Don't know what to do as don't have my insurance anymore!

I have had a rather large verucca for 2 years now. An other smaller ones have formed around it aswell.

I have tried Using A freezing aerosol 3 times to get rid of it. It made it smaller but it never disappeared and i cant use it anymore times.
I have also tried that bazooka stuff which goes over it, but that didnt work either.
I have actually run out of ideas to get rid of it and i dont know what to do now. It's affecting my confidence so if anyone could please help me out i'd be very grateful.

I had a verucca about thirty years ago - I thought the tiny black spot was a splinter under my skin - I hacked away at it with a pair of nail scissors and eventually when I pulled it out - along with what appeared to be a root about a cm long. Made me feel sick, Doc confirmed it was a verucca and I've never had one since then - get stuck in and dig the blighters out!!

I had verrucas for several years. I tried salicylic acid, bazuka, tea tree oil, patches, several courses of freezing at my Doctor's, cutting them out etc, etc but they kept returning. My Doctor recommended anything that could boost my immune system. Eventually I completely stopped drinking alcohol, improved my diet and started doing more exercise. Drastic I knowm but the verrucas disappeared of their own accord without any other treatment. I guess it is possible for your body to fight the virus. I'm a moderate drinker, but those lifestyle changes did the trick. I guess regular alcohol consumption was depressing my immune system.

Kathryn - don't rub the verruca so much. It shouldn't bleed when you're carrying out treatment!

Posted by Brenda Sinclair at 06/04/2009 20:21:00

The best remedy for a verruca is bicarbonate of soda and lemon juice. Mix a small quantity of each to a watery paste and using a toothbrush rub over the verruca. The pain disappeared in 4 days and the verruca vanished after 4 weeks.

I have had a verruca for nearly 30 years! I think I've got rid of it with the over the counter stuff, like scholl verruca removal pads and deep freezing spray, then back it comes a few weeks later. :( I've tried everything over the years, including tea tree, banana skins, duct tape and nail varnish. It's so painful, like standing and walking on a sharp stone. Now I'm trying something different I read in a book called "Everything you need to know about everything". Dip a PINK headed match in hot water to soften, then rub it on the verruca. Cover with a waterproof plaster. I've only just started doing this and it stings a bit for a while, so it must be doing something! I don't have a clue why this should work, but I'll give anything a go. Fingers crossed! *Watch this space*

Why do doctors not just arrange to have the verruca cut out?

Posted by Speaking from exerience at 05/04/2009 13:25:00

I am using a salicylic acid gel - ones a day after showering. it is destroying to veruca cells layer by lay as it comes away in flakes of skin. They say not to use it too many times but you have to to get to the root. its making a small deep hole in my foot but it is painless. once to veruca is totally gone, i will stop using it and the skin will heal. its important to keep it covered though because the common virus can only em-bed itself in damaged skin. Picking it up from swimming areas is a myth, there is no scientific proof - it is just speculation

I have lots of verrucas on both feet, one patch of mosiac. I have had them for about 8 years and hate them! My doctor told me when I originally got them that no treatment works & they would go of their own accord! yer right!I tried home freezing and wartner I purchased whilst in the USA & another cream equally as useless sold here in the UK-though I think these may work for newer smaller ones. I have now had a course of 4 laser treatments which have shrunk them but not got rid of them & not the miracle cure it claimed ie that it would put the virus into your system & your body would at last recognise the virus & attack it, then they would disappear of their own accord! Now they are onto cryo and the filing and acid between treatments! It is also painful a day or so after the treatment. Help it sounds like it is never ending & at £40 a treatment I will be broke soon!!! Very dispondent.

I have had a nasty verruca on my left foot for at least 25 years and it feels as if a pebble is in my shoe. I have tried gel, verruca plasters and freeze aerosol to no effect over the years. I have recently managed to pull the darn thing out root and all and apart from a bit of blood loss and soreness it appears to have done the job. I have been to the medical centre for advice and been told that it may come back. Watch this space.

I've had mosaic verrucas since I was 6 (I'm now 20) and been fobbed off many times by doctors saying cryo doesn'n work and to keep using bazuka etc etc. This was obviously very expensive, I wouldn't like to guess how much my mum and me have spent over my lifetime! As well as this I've tried duck tape, nail varnish, etc etc but they seem to be quite deep. I've finally been referred for cryo and had 3 treatments so far, and they do actually seem to be shrinking. Whether this is due to the fact the nurse also advised me to dab lemon oil on them after bathing every day I'm not sure because I had never tried lemon oil before starting the cryo, but whatever, it seems to be having some sort of effect. Has anyone tried the treatments advertised on the web like "warts no more" and "active cure"? Obviously they have lots of raving testimonials but I'm always sceptical, especally for that price.

    Hi,

I need some advice friends. I was a regular runner for even 20 miles a week. Last four months no way i can run because of this terrible verruca. I have tried so many things until now. Starting from verruca gel, discs and cryo. I have tried cryo for 3 times so far with a gap of 12 days in between, each time ended with more pain, initially looks like the verruca is disappearing but comes back with vengeance again. Any suggestions, I heard about the tea tree oil against virus. that is going to be my next try. Any suggestions are welcome.

    Hi,

I had a verruca for years and tried everything, bazuka, cryotherapy, ductape, it is all nonsense, unless its for a child, it won't make a bit of difference so save your money. I got mine removed by the doctor with local anaesthetic which is painful but means the doctor can cut the thing off. Sounds drastic but it is totally effective. Just ask for minor surgery.

I have long suffered with verrucas since i was 13 sometimes not so bad but lately all my left foot is covered i have tried everything but they don't go. So i went to my GP she advised me to try duct tape it stops the verruca breathing and as a last resort i gave it a go and it's made a great improvement it might take a while though it wont happen over night.

I have a large verruca on the side of my foot and after many treatments is still not going away. It is not painful bu is not a very nice sight.
I tried everything even duck tape but nothing seem working.
Chiropodist told me I can't have it removed so looks like I have to keep it for ever. Not very helpful he has been. Any suggestion-advise will be useful.
    Thanks

My 4 year old daughter had a small verrucca on her toe. Tried to get rid of it with bazuka gel, where you have to also rub it with emery board - which she hated and screamed the place down. She wouldn't let me get near it in the end.Couldn't carry on like this so took her to doctors. Doctors gave us Verrugon gel - just put a bit on every few days and cover with a plaster. Skin goes white and then falls off. Repeat this process after about a week skin came off with verrucca attached! Great - problem solved for her.But I have had a verrucca on my heel for about 2 years now. I have tried bazuka - no good, I am now trying my daughters cream. But not really working for me.I have the white skin but it doesn't fall off, maybe as I am walking on it. I am now rubbing it, picking it etc... I just have a really sore foot. Don't know what else to try now. Might try duct tape next - it worked on a wart my mom had! Then banana skin....

can you get verrucas on your fingers

In response to Lady, I tried using the a freezing treatment called Bazooka that I bought from a pharmacy but it didn't work...I tried 3 times, which was the limit or so it said on the box, but it didn't work at all, so I wouldn't recommend it...the chiropodist I saw afterwards told me they rarely worked because they don't get to the freezing temperatures that the cryotherapy gets to.

Have mine just 5 years. I had baby there in April 08 and my chiropodist thought they'd go but sadly no! I think what my problem is I'm too over anxious about them. Their more ingrained in my brain then in my feet! I want to try for another baby later this year and would love to be rid of the horrible stupid things before I do so. I've tried all over the counter stuff, have had them frozen off twice, tried the banana skin, even holy water(!) and now I'm attacking them with a small surgical blade trying to cut the little blighters out!

I am having cryotherapy for a verruca on the ball of my foot. Between weekly session, I soak my feet and file down the hard skin around the area with a footfile, and then dab a bit of Lemon Oil onto the wart. My nurse said that this would soften the skin, making the verruca more vulnerable. I then rub body lotion on my feet, which is recommended after exfoliation, dry them thoroughly and put a nice warm pair of bed socks on. It's quite laborious but it's working well and now my feet are nice all over!
The nurse did say that 1 in 3 verrucas returns after treatment, does anyone know the best way to avoid reinfection?
Do I really have to throw out my shoes and socks!?

i used a gel that turned into a plaster within 5 days the verruca and the root was on the plaster, painless. go to your doctor for it.

Instead of using pumus stones which are usually useless, Pedegg is a great tool to get the skin off. i filled down a verucaa within 2 weeks and never seen it again :D

I have a mosaic verucca and have had for approx 12 months. It looks like there are approx 100 veruccas on the ball of my foot which is now very painful to walk on. I have used over the counter products and none seem to work. How do i get rid of it once and for all.

to kill a verruca on the foot paint the wart with clear nail polish . this causes the wart to suffocate and die re apply the polish for about 2 day s you will find it will dry over and it can be scraped away

i have had a verruca on the near end of my big toe for around 5 years. i have been to the docters and tried freezing and scraping but this had only either been painful and not worked extremely well. therefore i suggest a waterproof cream which can be found in wilkinsons and superdrug only, its in a blue cardboard protective box. i hope this helps as i cannot remember the name because my verruca has since gone whilst using this cream.

As a swimming teacher I come across many veruccas and warts. A remedy which has worked on myself, my children and many friends has been to rub the wart with a garlic clove twice a day. The wart is usually gone within 2 weeks.

I first noticed that I had a verucca about a year and half ago i wa wondering weather or not it was to do with me going to karate because we train in bare feet so there might be somebody with a veruca and not covering with a sock etc. so first of all i left it be to see if it would just go by itself but even more came so obviously when i first realised i had a verucca i put a sock on my foot so i wouldn't pass it on. i have got quite a lot especially on the ball of my foot but now ive got them on the side of my big toe too. and ive used bazuka gel and i must admit they have gone smaller but then they just get bigger and to be honest i'm not sure if all of them are veruccas because they haven't all got a black spot in the middle of them. but i'm too embarresed to go to the doctors. They have to go because its embarrsing and i cant go swimming with my friends either.

A no-fail remedy for verrucas [{Plantar warts] is duct tape! Leave it on for as long as practical, and then file down or clip away the loose dead skin. (I even very carefully use a scalpel.) Once the root or core has been reached, it is gone! And it doesn't take 2 years, either.

Hi I had verrucas for years on my palms and my foot. I had also tried several treatments in the past and had no results but recently, I have found a solutions to the problem and want to share it. I bought the boots corn removal plasters (salycilic acid) and used them on my verrucas. I changed platers every two days and had to use more that five plasters on certain stubborn veruccas. The skin with the vericcas just fall off and I have got rid of two already. 5 plasters cos about 1.69 and they are cheap and work great. good luck.

I've had a verruca for over 2 and a half years and i was told not to treat it, but they are bigger than ever, so i went to the doctors to get treatment and they have shrunk alot they still aren't gone but if you are going to do the do it yourself method asked to be prescribed Salactol collodion. Trust me, it's good stuff! All you do is soak your foot in warm water for 5 minutes, and then rub the surface of the verruca with a pumice stone then let it dry.

Wartner - brilliant stuff - That and 8 visits to Doctors who froze the area - It takes serious time to eradicate, that being said, once gone throw out all socks, shoes etc...expensive but the only way..

I've had my 'verruca' for 18 years!! It on on the right underside of my toe next to my little toe on my right foot. I'm sick of it so much!! I've had it cut out 3 times, and burnt out 2 times. It grows back. It is so painful in the wet/cold, like a toothache. I'm so tired of it. I've tried all herbal remedies, banana skins, you name it, i've tried it. It thickens with skin, getting larger, and larger. I can pick off the topmost layers of skin, but could never cut or damage in any way as its pure agony. If anyone treads on my foot I suffer in agony. I hate the horrible parasite. Anyone got some advice please. I am 100% genuine in that I have indeed had this that many years.

I started with one verucca and didnt worry about it until they started spreading. About 1 year later i have 8 'mosaic veruccas' and i can see where some others are starting to get bigger. I really dont like them and have tried everything!!! can someone please suggest something...

Posted by Anonymous at 28/12/2008 08:57:00

I got a verucca about 5 years ago. I tried treatments, but nothing worked. After a few months I had several veruccas on each foot. I was told by doctors they would eventually disappear, but they haven't. Using banana skin overnight was recommended by a health professional. I am currently doing this and they seem to be getting better...worth a try!!
