Nipple problems

Nipple discharge

Nipple discharge is usually harmless and does not signify anything seriously wrong. In fact, most women can squeeze some discharge out of their nipples, especially if they have had children in the past. This may be whitish or may be yellow-green or almost black.

On the other hand, nipple discharge can be a symptom of breast cancer, particularly if it is bloodstained. Therefore, you should definitely discuss any nipple discharge with your doctor. If you are a man, you should see your doctor straight away, because the usual cause is a tumour and you will need treatment.

What your doctor will do. Your doctor will check your medication, because some drugs can cause (non-bloody) nipple discharge. The most common culprits are:
  • cimetidine (for stomach problems)
  • oral contraceptives
  • some antidepressants and other drugs for psychological problems
  • domperidone (for nausea).
Your doctor will ask whether there is any possibility that you could be pregnant. Some women have nipple discharge very early in pregnancy. Your doctor will then examine your whole breast thoroughly (not just the nipple), to make sure you have no lumps.

Even if you have not noticed any blood, your doctor may ask you to try to squeeze a few drops out, and will test it for microscopic blood.

Each nipple has about 15–20 tiny pores on it. These pores are the openings of ducts that connect with the glandular tissue in the breast. You and your doctor should try to work out whether the discharge is coming from just one pore, or from several.
  • The cause is very, very unlikely to be breast cancer if the discharge is coming from several pores, it does not contain any blood and you are under 50 years of age.
  • If the discharge is bloodstained, or it is emerging from just one pore, your doctor will refer you to a hospital clinic for tests (such as ultrasound, mammography and looking at the discharge under the microscope) to make sure that breast cancer is not responsible.
  • If the discharge is milky and coming from both breasts, your doctor can do a blood test to check for an imbalance of the hormone prolactin.
If all the tests are normal, you can stop worrying, but the discharge may still bother you (perhaps soiling your clothes). A possible cause is some inflammation (mastitis) around the ducts. This is linked with smoking, and may improve if you stop smoking and avoid squeezing. A course of antibiotics may help.

It is possible to have an operation to close or remove the ducts that the discharge is coming from. This operation may not be a good idea for anyone who plans to become pregnant afterwards – depending on the number of ducts involved, it might make breastfeeding difficult and the breast might become congested.

Detergent or body soap changes its composition without notice. That may cause your itchy nipples, Better visit a doctor than being too late in worst case.

I had a very itchy breast about a month ago and I kept scratching on my areola and I guess I scared my Montgomery gland or something because my skin turned scaly, cracked, and whenni peeled off the dead skin there was a little bit of clear discharge and it kind of stung a bit. I've been applying neosporin to it and it relives the itching but the scaly skin is still there

I am a user of prohormones. Through the cycle the estrogen level in males is low and testosterone is high. So when you come off the cycle the estrogen skyrockets and right now I have itchy puffy and tiny rash and this is a pre-case of gynoconmastia. Google it!

omg i am soo glad that i ahve read this article i feel much better now. after going on holiday there was damp in my bra and then it got all itchy and before i knew it all the top layer of skin had come of my nipples and they constantly ooze yellow liquid so i ahve to wear thick tissue pads inside my bra. I have had it go about 4 monthes now and have only just realised that it is probably eczema as i have had it since iwas born and it has gotten really bad recently. I use to just let it dry to stop the oozing but now i think im gonna apply my eczema cream to it and see if the oozing stops and my skin heals

I am seeing my doctor this morning and I plan to address my issue. Both of my nipples get itchy, but it's mainly the left one, which also sometimes gets scaly (Just a very small patch of dry skin, but scaly is the closest description here.) as well. I am bookmarking this page and I will let y'all know what he says. P.S. I have tried over the counter remedies already. Everything from Cortaid, Monistat (in case of mild thrush) lotion, bath oils... etc. Hopefully today I'll get more of an answer.

Hi! well.. my problem is that my nipples are too big...my areolas are not big they're actually smaller than the average but the nipples are big and chubby..i've never been pregnant.

Posted by Realist on 27/12/2009 at 01:57:00 am

For all of you girls having problems, saying it's too embarassing to go to a doctor, please do. Listen, if it is something serious, you would rather go to a doctor and be a little embarrassed then go on and find out it's something REALLY bad that you could have treated if you just went sooner. You won't know until you go. It could be bad, or it could be not. At least you know and you're not wondering. I hope this advice helped a little bit. I have a VERY itchy nipple (left one). It's a LITTLE dry, and really only gets itchy when it's not encased in a bra. I don't know what's wrong, but I'm going to do myself a favor, and if I'm not pregnant, I'm going to a doctor. Please do the same ^.^ You won't regret it. Hope it helped.

hey i have flat nipples, they become erect wen i masage the area around them but even then they protrude only a little and even that erection doesnt last for very long, they go back to being flat again quickly. I also have hair around my nipples and i pluck it out, but now i want to get rid of it. I cant tell anyone about it as it is embarrassing. Also the diameter of the dark area around my nipples is is big. Please tell me that this all combined with the fact that i have a problem of multiple egg formation doesnt mean any serious trouble. I actually have a problem of formation of multiple eggs due to which i do not get my period naturally and take pills at times to get it. However sometimes my period does come naturally but that is very rare. Please help me out

My problem isn't listed here! I have these crust type things on my nipples (not on the aeola) I can pull them off carefully, but they just come back over time. It's really making me worry... I don't want to tell anyone I know, or go to a doctor because it's embarrassing... Please help me?

My left nipple is shaped pretty normally, but my right nipple is in the shape of a sideways v. It looks like it should be one nipple, but since it fold s inward in the middle (which is why it looks like a "v" - one side still connected) and comes to two "points" it seems like it's two nipples. It is always erect, while my other nipple only is when cold, etc. I'm only thirteen and to be honest I'm really scared. Is this normal? Do I tell my mom or a doctor?

i have a yellow spot around the outer nipple area on both breast what does it mean? should i be worry about breast cancer?

Posted by Anonymous on 11/11/2009 at 04:54:00 pm

I have always had one flat or inverted nipple, it goes in when cold and I find this embarassing if I'm with my partner etc. I have been using a product called nipplette, which has helped a lot but not cured the problem, so I feel a bit more confident. It gets me down and wish I was normal, I feel like I'm the only one with this and unfortunately my daughter has both of hers inverted, I have thought about surgery, but I don't know if that will cure me and I don't know what other problems it could create. I've not met any other women who have this problem, it would be nice to know how they cope with it etc.

I have been experiencing a dark green nipple discharge and was referred to the breast unit at my local hospital. I was scared at the possible outcomes, but my doctor assured me that it was not dangerous with his final conclusion being that I have a problem with the Keratin in my body. Keratin is found in skin, hair, teeth and bones. Basically, I do not produce strong Keratin - meaning that I get seepage through my skin. When I think about it I am constantly sweating, which could be a result of this too and my hair is always breaking and so are my teeth - coz I don

I was wandering if someone may be able to give me some advise please? During the last few months - roughly since Christmas - I have noticed that occassionally the nipple on my right breast becomes inverted for short periods of time. I breastfed my son for a year but stopped when this started happening. As of yet I havent seen my GP as I have no other symptoms, although I am still concerned. Many thanks for your time.

They all came back pretty normal. What should I do about the pain and itching. My dr said wait three months and retest....but three months with an itchy painful breast??

I found the information "Itchy, scaly nipples" very helpful! This is what my doctor diagnosed a few months ago, & with the help of the cream given, I have seen a dramatic change colour & not itchy anymore, Cheers for the info!

I have one nipple that is inverted 95% of the time but I am able to push on the sides of it and it becomes everted. Is this ok? do I need to get a 2nd opinion? I have regular digital mamagrams and they all come back negative. I'm afraid they are not reading them corectly??

I am a 23 yr old female. My nipples are "VERY" flat and always have been. I've read that there is an expensive surgery that can fix this problem, but I do not have any health insurance or the money to pay for the procedure. This has always bothered me especially during sex. I've never wanted my partner to touch or see my breasts because of my nipples being flat. I wanted to know if there is any medicine that I can take or any other method of fixing this problem that will help me. Thanks

thank you for the helpful information beause surgery is not a option for me if i want to have another child. To me it is embarassing and to know that other women like me have it makes me relieved that Im not the only one.Where do you get those shells?

Posted by Anonymous on 08/01/2009 at 06:00:00 pm

it is embarassing to talk about. The advice that was given is helpful. I have had a child and didn't breastfeed. I missed that experience and want to try for a second child. I know it will be harder, but i can do it. Thank for the helpful tips.

If your nipple is inverted as was not prior, YOU MUST SEE A DOCTOR. It could be a sign of breast cancer, which is very treatable if caught early.
