Mouth ulcers
We all have mouth ulcers occasionally. The medical term for them is aphthous ulcers. They are round, painful sores inside the mouth, which interfere with eating and toothbrushing because of the pain. The centre of the sore is white or greyish. Usually, eating spicy or salty foods is especially painful.
Causes of mouth ulcers
What to do about mouth ulcers
- You could try chlorhexidine gluconate mouth rinse, which you can buy in the UK from a pharmacy without a prescription. Use it twice daily. There is some evidence that this may reduce the frequency and severity of recurrent mouth ulcers, but long-term use can stain the teeth.
- Look for a toothpaste that does not contain sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS). One study showed that switching to a SLS-free toothpaste more than halved the likelihood of recurring mouth ulcers, but another study found no difference (Oral Disorders 1999;5:39-43).
- Avoid spicy, salty or sour foods until the ulcer has healed.
- Dissolve a tablet of soluble (dispersible) paracetamol in water, and swirl it round your mouth before swallowing it.
- Before eating, rinse your mouth with iced water. This may dull the pain, so that eating is more comfortable.
- Buy a mouth ulcer liquid rinse or gel from a pharmacy. These contain an anaesthetic. Many people find the rinse easier to use than a gel, especially if they have several ulcers at the same time, and the rinse forms a protective barrier over the ulcer as well as relieving pain..
- Some people find that warm (not hot) camomile tea is helpful. Swirl it round the mouth before drinking it.

gentian violet is good for ulcers, it dries them out and stops them hurting whilst they heal.

I've suffered from recurrent mouth ulcers since I was a child. When I was in my twenties a doctor suggested i take up smoking (!!@*&??!) I did in fact take up smoking when in my thirties (...) and YES the ulcers did improve!!! I've never been able to find out why this is so. Now in my fifties I have tried numerous times to quit smoking. Each time the ulcers come back full force - the pain is so bad I start to smoke again! I'm giving it another go...had my last cigarette a week ago (Monday) By the Friday the ulcers had started up - Am currently in great pain (eating, drinking, talking etc. etc.)Off to the doc for painkillers tomorrow...I REALLY don't want to start smoking again - It's hard enough to cope with the psychological aspects of giving up without the xtra pain! Have tried every remedy/seen every specialist, but no-one seems to have any sort of answer to this problem.

Mouth Ulcers / Aaphthous Ulcers are lesions caused in the mucous membrane of the mouth and lips. They could be located anywhere inside the mouth, under the tongue or at the base of the gums. They can be very painful and can make eating and talking difficult. They develop due to various reasons, like trauma, infection, drugs, deficiencies or any medical condition. Research in natural therapies has paved the way for effective treatment of this condition. They provide relief from the acute pain and swelling caused due to ulceration of the oral mucosa.* They also speed up the healing process, thereby preventing any secondary infection.* Supplemented by vitamins and minerals they address the nutritional deficiencies that are a common cause of aphthous ulcers.* Customers report a marked reduction in relapses of ulcers after taking natural therapies. Similar protocols are provided by Biogetica.

Test yourself for coeliac disease (Gluten intolerance). I suffered with recurring mouth ulcers for years and as soon as I went 'gluten free' the problem went away. Following a gluten free diet can be tough but anything is better then multiple ulcers on tongue and throat.. If you do have ulcers avoid toothpaste with SLS, try Weleda. Hope it helps someone!

Hello there. I have been plagued by mouth ulcers for many years, although I have significantly reduced the occurances over the last few years. I recommend having a read of http://www.cankersoresolutions.com which details many steps to prevent and cure mouth ulcers. It defintely helped me.

Wow it feels great knowing there's a whole bunch of people who are same as me. I constantly have ulcers, my lips are always swollen to the point where people constantly ask "Why are your lips so fat". Currently I probably have about 10 and most are concentrated on the same place, some are even on my tongue. Sometimes the embarassment if my lips makes me fake sick to stay home :/.

I'm always getting ulcers, especially if I haven't been Eating healthily or have eaten too much orange juice. I found a super strength gel in lloyds pharmacy, it works well and literally numbs the place where the ulcer but you have to try not to swallow it cos it's not pleasant, which I sometimes found hard when I had an ulcer near the back of my mouth :( . But anyway found salt water worked quite well too in cleaning ur mouth out.

Ulcers are hidious. I have got 12 at the same time once. I curently have around 8, which is normal for me. The doctors blame it on my braces, though I have the same amount each month to what I did before getting braces. I am going to try the Cotton Bud things, and see if they help me at all. P.S the comments on this page, are way better than the actual advice you have given.

I have been having mouth ulcers since i was about 5. I used to get about rwo a month and they would become bigger and holes would appear in them casuing severe pain however i have now been receiving vitamin B12 injection every 12 weeks for about 10 years now and it has really helped i still get the odd one normally on the side of my tongue so i cant ear or talk but these are very infrequently now thankfully.

**********Hi all******* if you live in the UK try the little cotton buds filled with a liquid from Boots as Catherine recommends...it really helps....instantly...is for one use only...it covers the ulcer with a thin membrane and it stays there for couple of days...you dont feel the pain at all!!!!!i've try them in the past...the first time i thought it was a miracle...the secondc time didnt last for long but ill try them again...is the best medicine in the market for mouth ulcer sufferers..highly recommended..PS i dont know if there is anything equivalent in other countrys but you might find somewhere...i heard they have something similar in the US

I have had recurring mouth ulcers ever since I can remember, I am now 27. They seem to get worse when ever I have citrus fruit. I can no longer eat oranges (including orange juice), mandarins, pineapple (even on Hawaiian pizza) or anything with citric acid. I love all these fruits but whenever I have them I get these damn things. I had a mouth full of orange juice on the weekend and now as a result I have a huge ulcer at the back of my mouth which is practically covering my back tooth. I do have Vegemite in my cupboard (even though I live in Toronto)so I will try that. Also in Australia, you can buy a product called SM-33. It is a brown liquid that you dip a cotton bud in and then put that on the ulcer. The pain is intense and will bring tears to your eyes but it seems to work too. But if anyone has reoccurring ulcers, try to stop eating citrus fruits or anything that includes a lot of citric acid.

Put it on around 2 times its gona cause you a hell of a pain but within 2 days ur ulcer will die down and it will start going away..Vegimite is a Australian traditional spread that u put on toast for breakfast it tastes like crap but at the end of the day ur not puting any chemicals into ur mouth its totally safe..

Ever since I can remember I've been getting ulcers every few weeks... I used to dread the winter especially as I'd get up to 5 in one go!! Tried everything from salt water, gels, pastes etc etc... Thought my prayers had been answered when I went into Boots and discovered these little cotton buds filled with a liquid. You snap off the end, and hold the bud on your ulcer for 10 seconds. It stings for a few seconds, but after that your ulcer doesnt hurt at all, and goes away within a few days. Bonjela have released their version aswell - 'Bonjela Once' although they are pricey (about

My advice is to fill a cup up with warm water and then add 3 teaspoons of salt. Stir it with a spoon as this dissolves the salt. Swirl it round your mouth and then spit it out. It may sting a little. Repeat until the cup is empty. Follow these steps three times a day until it gradually clears up. REMEMBER: DO NOT SWALLOW IT!
