Mouth ulcers

We all have mouth ulcers occasionally. The medical term for them is aphthous ulcers. They are round, painful sores inside the mouth, which interfere with eating and toothbrushing because of the pain. The centre of the sore is white or greyish. Usually, eating spicy or salty foods is especially painful.

An unlucky 12% of the population suffer from mouth ulcers repeatedly. Usually the problem starts in childhood or adolescence, and seems to get better in the 40s. Typically, the ulcers come in crops of one to five at a time. The mouth is remarkably good at healing, so the ulcers last for only a week or two. Then a few weeks later it may happen again.

Causes of mouth ulcers

Most mouth ulcer sufferers note that ulcers are more likely when they are feeling stressed or run-down – these were the top two causes reported to www.mouthulcers.org.

Although the cause of most mouth ulcers is unknown, accidental damage is a common reason. For example, biting the tongue or cheek lining by mistake, eating foods that are too hot, a sharp broken tooth, or wearing badly-fitting dentures can all produce a mouth ulcer.

In 1 in 3 sufferers, it seems to run in the family because of an inherited tendency. A few people who constantly get mouth ulcers are anaemic or short of iron, folate or vitamin B12. Zinc deficiency, food hypersensitivity and general psychological stress have all been blamed for mouth ulcers, but specialists now think these are unlikely to be responsible. A few women find that mouth ulcers are more likely before their periods, so hormones might perhaps have an influence. Annoyingly, some people develop mouth ulcers after stopping smoking.

Repeated mouth ulcers can be part of several medical conditions (such as coeliac disease).and skin conditions. Though these disorders are unusual, you should see your doctor if you have mouth ulcers often.

Biphosphonate tablets (a bone-strengthening medication) can burn the inside of the mouth if you allow them to dissolve in the mouth rather than swallowing them whole with plenty of water.

Very rarely, a mouth ulcer can be cancerous. A cancerous ulcer does not heal, and is more common in older people, especially long-term smokers and drinkers. So you should see your doctor if you have an ulcer that does not heal within 3 weeks. If your ulcer is painless, do not ignore it because cancerous ulcers may be pain-free.

What to do about mouth ulcers

Unfortunately, there no reliable way of preventing ordinary mouth ulcers.
  • You could try chlorhexidine gluconate mouth rinse, which you can buy in the UK from a pharmacy without a prescription. Use it twice daily. There is some evidence that this may reduce the frequency and severity of recurrent mouth ulcers, but long-term use can stain the teeth.
  • Look for a toothpaste that does not contain sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS). One study showed that switching to a SLS-free toothpaste more than halved the likelihood of recurring mouth ulcers, but another study found no difference (Oral Disorders 1999;5:39-43).
There are various ways of relieving the pain, while waiting for the ulcer to heal itself.
  • Avoid spicy, salty or sour foods until the ulcer has healed.
  • Dissolve a tablet of soluble (dispersible) paracetamol in water, and swirl it round your mouth before swallowing it.
  • Before eating, rinse your mouth with iced water. This may dull the pain, so that eating is more comfortable.
  • Buy a mouth ulcer liquid rinse or gel from a pharmacy. These contain an anaesthetic. Many people find the rinse easier to use than a gel, especially if they have several ulcers at the same time, and the rinse forms a protective barrier over the ulcer as well as relieving pain..
  • Some people find that warm (not hot) camomile tea is helpful. Swirl it round the mouth before drinking it.

What your dentist can do

Dentists are experts on all types of mouth problems, so your dentist will be able to give you general advice about mouth ulcers. Another reason to see your dentist is that trauma from a sharp tooth, a brace or ill-fitting dentures are common causes of mouth ulcers.

What your doctor can do

Your doctor can prescribe a corticosteroid paste. This is the best treatment for getting rid of ordinary mouth ulcers (aphthous ulcers), but of course it does not prevent them from occurring again. Apply it as soon as you suspect that an ulcer is forming. Dry the area with a tissue first, so that the paste sticks on.

Although ordinary aphthous ulcers are the most likely, there are other possibilities. Mouth ulcers can be part of several medical and skin conditions, so tell your doctor if you have any other symptoms, or if you have blisters or sores on any other part of your body. Your family physician may wish to check a blood sample for levels of iron, folate and vitamin B12. Of course, anyone with a mouth ulcer that does not go away in 3 weeks should see their doctor, because a persistent ulcer that refuses to heal could be cancerous.

For people who have frequent mouth ulcers, a recent study suggests that vitamin B12 tablets taken under the tongue (sublingually) may help, even in people whose blood level of vitamin B12 is normal. In the study, 74% of the people given the B12 became ulcer-free, compared with 32% given a dummy tablet. The treatment had to be given for at least 5 months to be effective. I use Colgate Total all the time. I have a ulcer in my mouth that comes and goes away, and 3 weeks later comes back, the ulcer hurts really bad I rinsed my mouth with salt water but it didn't help, it hurts when I eat and talk I also have tried Glycerin and Orajel Do you think these ulcers are the result of chemicals called “triclosan”, which is found in “Colgate Total” toothpaste? I want so much to have an answer to my question and a solution to my problem

I have found that Myrrh Gum mixed 50/50 with water & applied to the mouth ulcers will heal them in 2-3 days. Just apply several times a day with a Q tip, it also reduces the pain. Myrrh gum can be found in health food stores it is a liquid. It is mentioned in the Bible, as 1 of the gifts to baby Jesus from the wise men.

If you have recurring mouth ulcers, sores on skin or scalp, joint pain, fatigue, episcleritis and ulcers on penis or vagina, please be aware you could have behcet's disease. Often new symptoms develop over years until you realise there is a pattern. Mouth ulcers, ulcers below and in bowels and stomach all linked up.

I have been suffering with milk also since I was a child but only in my 20s did they become very bad before periods . Switching my toothpaste to a non-sodium laurel sulfate toothpaste almost ended them completely. My dentist also prescribes me an acid that is mixed at the pharmacy that you can apply with a Q-tip . It burns very badly for 45 seconds but then afterwards the pain immediately is gone. The acid burns the necrotic tissue so the ulcer cannot live off of the dead tissue and get bigger. I call it the miracle treatment! It really works well. I have recently found that aspirin products will cause me to have clusters of ulcers the very next day so I avoid aspirin completely now.

I actually find mouth ulcers really annoying as most people do. I've had to moth ulcers very close together and the pain when I move my mouth is horrible and I've only had this for like 2 days so I'm hoping it won't get any worse. The one thing you should get to help this is Bonjela this helps a lot, its a sort of gel that will sooth it a little so the pain will go for a while and it won't be as swallon if this is also your case. I find bonjela very useful, at first when you put it on it will sting and your eyes might fill up with stears for a lot of you (mostly females or children) but don't worry! Its worth it when its done. Hope this helped you but apart from that brush more than 2 times a day to fight it! Bye!x

hello, I wrote this comment while a sore is in my mouth obviously. I am from Philippines. Just like another person here says, I have one sore and then after the sore heals another appears. I am not new to the sore thing but before my sores is like you get sore now, it heals it two weeks maximum and then it will repeat after some several months but now as I observed that is stated above, its recurring or persistent in every week. I am trying to cure it by salt water or saline solution, applying daktarin oral gel and ice chips too. nothing works but the thing is I have sore but its not painful at all. It's like it just pops there every now and then making me panic and stressed along the way. If I also remember, there was one time last year around 16th of December, I cannot eat properly due to the pain in chewing food like it cuts through my tongue, I have this white surface like the tongue get mad but it disappeared after one week and it didn't come back but the sore is persistent. I am worried what could it be. Hope you will answer my concern soon. Thank you and more power

Hi all. I find that Kenalog works quite well. It doesnt sting when you apply it and its used for all ages! Its like a sticky wax in your mouth when you apply it so don't move your mouth around too much after applying. Also to prevent the pain abit I like to use Aloe Vera with a hint of honey. Its sweet and tasty and numbs the pain for a while. Swish it around your mouth and near your ulcer for a while. Otherwise you could try taking two teaspoons of honey and keeping it near the area of your ulcer! I HATE ulcers so hope this works!!! P.S Take ALOT of water. Don't let your ulcer become dry or it won't heal :)

I had a hip replacement in February of this year. In the hospital I contracted sores in my mouth. They have never gone away and have spread and hurt like heck. I have seen many doctors and dentists, most are specialists.. have taken many rx's, mouthwashes as well as ointments. Have tried 4 bottles of Daniel's cocktail. 9 1/2 months of pain with no answers.. but a lot ruled out.. is not fun. Been reading here... asked nurse at Doc office if it could be MRSA.. and she said if it were MRSA in the mouth I would be dead. I asked nurse (this was today as I was having blood tests again) if it could be cancer of the mouth. She said absolutely not. I am wondering if these were answers she was not qualified to give. Have seen that doctor the day before but failed to ask those questions. I also have MS and am wondering if that is contributing. ARGGGG

For those who keep asking if ulcers can be passed by oral sex or just kissing, the answer is no. However maintaining oral hygeine after whatever you do will be benificial to ulcer sufferers. Also never put your hands in your mouth and avoid eating with your hands, not only is it polite manners it'll lower the chance of certain bacteria causing an ulcer.

I have had ulcers for the past 10 years. For 3 years i didnt have a single day where i didnt have ulcersI I would have ulcers joining from one side of my gum to the other and my face being severly swollen as a result. I tried vit B in the hope of relieving the pain but actually vit B made them multiply and I began getting severe migraines for the first time in my life, even losing my speech and having blackouts! Corsydl mouthwash wasn't too bad for stopping them getting larger but stained teeth badly. I have now discovered it was mainly CHOCOLATE all along, I cut chocolate and sugary foods out and rapidly the ulcers vanished. After years of trial and error I noticed Anadins, pasta, and nuts were also small culprits. Another help is if you can eat 2 boiled eggs a day or raw even better!

I get clusters of mouth ulcers but now use a gel called Bye mouth ulcer which is great as it doesnt sting and as long as I leave it for a few minutes I can eat and drink without it being uncomfortable. I bought it online. My sister now uses it on my niece who is four as it is safe for kids not like others I have bought before where you had to be 16 to use it. As soon as I feel them coming I pop the gel on it is brilliant.

I suffer from ulcers very frequently and there is a product out that I had never used call oralmedic, its fantastic. It comes in a pack of 2 doses and its a cotton bud that has solution in and this literally seems to burn the ulcer at first, numbs it for hours and then it goes. Brilliant! The only place that seems to sell it it tesco stores and the pharmacies within tesco stores ( this is where I first discovered it and I spent the weekend going to LLoyds, Boots, coop and no-one had heard of it but did find it in the tescos at a reduced price of £1.48 bargain!!).

I have suffered from mouth ulcers most of my life. I find a good mouth wash like "Listerine" prevents them from coming so often. But one thing I can assure you is forget all the chemist remedies and Bonjela etc and just use salt. Either gargle or wet your finger dip it in salt and put it on the ulcer. Yes it stings. But it certainly clears them up faster than anything else I have tried. If you think you have a mouth ulcer coming then gargle with salt water. I swear by it.

Posted by Linzi on 14/03/2012 at 03:27

Salt in water and swish round your mouth twice a day OR if your really brave wet the tip of your finger, stick some salt on to it and apply directly to the ulcer. It stings but it works!

Put just enough water in a beaker for 1-2 mouthfuls, and add 3 drops of tea tree oil, and swish it round your mouth for a minute, then spit out. Do this every morning and evening, regardless of whether or not you have an ulcer.

I have been taking a Multi VitB tablet as recommended at a chemists a long time ago.About 6 months ago it was suggested in a health shop that I might not be digesting it and she recommended a Vit B12 dissolved under the tongue. This has helped tremendously. I still get ulcers, but nowhere near as many. If I get a bad one it is much less painful and doesnt last as long.

I have had mouth ulcers since I was a very little girl. I had them all the time when I was little, they subsided somewhat in my early twenties, but came back with a vengence in my late twenties. I am now 30 and have them about every other week. Last year when I was pregnant for the first time, I was on prenatal vitamins and never had an ulcer the whole time I was pregnant. I believe vitamins work to keep them at bay.

Hi I have had two mouth ulcers on either side of my mouth for almost around 10years. The ulcers are in the same position on either side of my mouth and get sore every other day or two days. I have tried treatments to get rid of the ulcers but they never go. I did speak to both a dentist and my doctor around 7 or 8 years ago and they seemed to think the ulcers were there because of the way my teeth are positioned and think that I must catch my skin on it whilst sleeping. The dentist said that it was nothing to worry about and said that as I have had the ulcers for so many years and they have stayed the same it was fine. He said some people get ulcers that dont go away. I have always worried about the ulcers as I do think it is odd that they never go away. I used to smoke but gave up 5 years ago and worry that it may have something to do with that. Ultimately my fear is that it may be something serious and I always have it on my mind. Please help.

I have an extremly large ulcer on the inside of my top lip. It is so large that it has split down parts and stings so badly that their isnt much medication that doe not sting painfully when used. I note that I have been run down ever since a school trip before the holidays and have had many problems with my health since then.

This hurts like the dickens but my dad taught me that if you dissolve an aspirin on your ulcer it numbs it and helps it go away faster! I have had some pretty large ones where I have had to use this method a couple days after the first aspirin but they will start to go away within a couple days!

hi, My husband suffered from repeated mouth ulcers (not cancer patient)for many years(20 yrs). He would have many ulcers and then they would heal.drinking buttermilk would help a little but otherwise no big change. He also has constipation problem on and off. we didnt link it together until i read a article about lip beauty.can you believe it? no doctor was able to find out but if he tries and combats constipation, he wont have. And wen he suffers from constipation he will have it again. Also, i have seen my grand parents and people their age wash their mouth (gargle and spit water) after using restroom. They say it removes some bad stuff (I am from India) . Guess what, if he tries doing it the ulcers heal fast. I think, there could be many factors for mouth ulcers. But hope this helps someone.

Hello fellow sufferers. I have totally cut down my mouth ulcers by only using toothpaste that DOES NOT contain SODIUM LAURYL SULPHATE also known as SLS or SODIUM LAURYTH SULPHATE. (Sensodyne is ok!)Rinse your toothpaste out of your mouth well. Do not EVER smoke menthol cigarettes or chew menthol gum. One fag led to me having 17 ulcers at once! Not good. Frador is the best thing ever. You could be aneamic or have celiac disease. Good luck!

Hi I had problems with ulcers for months but it has been resolved! I went to the doctor and was prescribed triamcinolone paste brand name:Adcortyl paste apply to ulcer its quite thick so best used before bed and a few applications of this and it helped. They still returned frequently though this was just good for when they came. As i work in pharmacy i spoke to my pharmacist and asked what they thought would be best for re-occuring ulcers and recommended vitamin b12 compound tablets to be prescribed by doctor.I took this information and was prescribed this medication took 10 days worth and have never had ulcers for the last 3years!!!!Definately recommended and worth a go if you frequently get them!

Her entire mouth is covered. The doctor thinks she has irritable bowl disease. She wants to put her under and see what the scope says. We have tried...all from granary, acyclovir, benderyl.maylox.lidocaine. blend, steriod mouth wash.... I control her diet ... low sodium, no citrus, no acid... and still we have ulcers.... what do I do to give my little girl some relief????? It effects everthing... God Bless and hopefully someone has went through this to help us.

i have had mouth ulcers since i was young and none of my relatives have it. only about once a year or less. right now, i have one that has been there for about a week now. they usually go away without me having to do anything and are only about 5mm. the one i have now is 10mm and has yellowy mucus in the crater-like centre. its located at the back of my cheek because i bit it by accident and it became an ulcer. whenever i bite or put my teeth together, it rubs my ulcer and the pain is excruciating. i've tried Bonjela. i dont like it. it doesnt smell r tasts at all pleasant and stings. it only lasts for a little bit and for me, it doesnt numb the pain much. what else can i use?

I've suffered from mouth ulcers for years and through trial and error have found which foods cause mine. Strange as it may seem, certain brands of chocolate bring it on, as does cheap concentrated orange juice! When I do get mouth ulcers, I've found 'Frador' is the best thing. It's a topical treatment applied with a q-tip. Ask for it at Boots, it's usually behind the pharmacy counter.

Its to be held in ure mouth and not inhaled, it has a strong steroid in it and kills the ulcers, its called Clenil Modulite 100 (Beclometasone dipropionate). Its working for me, have had no ulcers this 2 mths now and its great. The inhaler is used for asthma but the steroid in it kills the ulcers, try it out....

Posted by Malene on 26/01/2011 at 12:09

Thanks all you guys for all the comments and suggestions. I feel for you guys suffering from this. I stumbled on this site, looking for some solution from a young friend in her twenties. She says she tends to get them either before or after her period, like another person who commented. Some of you say you get them if you eat certain kinds of food, or if you lack sleep, you are lucky, if you know when you get them, then try not to do what brings them about. I also read another place that B 12 vitamin sublingual - taken under the tongue - for at least 5 months had helped 75% of those taking it from it to reoccur. Worth a try! I'm gonna suggest she tries either the ginger treatment or the baking soda or salt water gurgle. Equal parts of liquid anatacid and antihistamin is also said to be helpful put on the wound.

I suffer from mouth ulcers, I don't know how many othe rpeople have had this experience - but often find that some of the things supposed to cure or make them better actually make the problem worse. I've also found doctors I've consulted to be very dismissive about the problem - saying "oh yes, everyone gets them sometimes. You just have to deal with it." or suggesting my dental hygiene might be lacking (I assure you it isn't!) There's a definite connection between consuming Vitamin C and getting mouth ulcers for example. I only have to look at a glass of orange juice for my mouth to break out in ulcers a few hours later. And Vitamin C tablets are a nightmare. I avoid anything even remotely citrus these days and the ulcers are a lot better than they once were. I also tried taking Vitamin B Complex for a while - the ulcers got worse whilst I was taking it, and better not long after I stopped (I repeated this experiment a few years later, with much the same result - the B vitamin thing appears to be a load of rubbish in my case). Bonjela is guaranteed to make a small ulcer turn into a raging inferno in my case. I think I must be allergic to it! I do find taking dispersible aspirin and swilling it around my mouth before swallowing is very effective at soothing the pain, as is sucking ice cubes. Everyone's mouth ulcers are triggered by different things.I think the main thing to do is to try and figure out what's causing the ulcers - write down what you've eaten, how tired/stressed you were, that kind of thing - and see if there are any common culprits.

i get mouth ulcers on a regular basis. about 4 ulcers a month. I've tried nearly everything! Anbesol id good, but doesn't last long, and it hurts like hell to put on!!! (worse than bonjela!!) Iglu is ok, but hurt to get on the ulcer. Bonjela is good but rubs off after an hour or two, i find that rinsing ur mouth with listerine helps numb the pain, thought stings so much!!!!!!! hope this helps

Posted by Neama on 16/01/2011 at 12:52

@Optional: If you live in UK, I'd say try "Bonjela". It's a gooey thing you put on the ulcer (tastes like salmiak/mint). It'll hurt for a few seconds but after that it's numb for 1-5 hours, for me at least. I'd say at least give it a try :)

hey i have had a mouth ulcer at the back of my mouth, and its just above my throat its really painful when i breath, eat, drink water and i have tryed everything from swiling around my mouth with mouthwash's and salt water to having sprays. my mouth ulcer is quite big and hurts all the time and has a whitey colour and i have had it for 3 weeks.

I've had mouth ulcers since I was a little girl. Here recently they have gotten much bigger and stay alot longer. In the last 3 months I don't think that I've had an ulcers smaller than a dime. I even kept one on my tougue for about 3 months. I've went to my doctor, and my denist. The doctor gave me a compound mouthwash and my denist has gaving me a pasty liquid. BOTH have not helped. Raising with salt water doesn't help. I even put staight salt on them because I'm in so much pain. I can't find anything that CURES them just a numbing medicine that last for about 5mins before I have to reply more on. I'm pretty much open to anything at this point. If anyone has a resolution please let me know.

So, I've gotten canker sores before and never had them be a big deal until a couple day's ago. Just over a week ago I came down with a bad case of conjunctivitis (a.k.a pink eye) and it's just begun to get better. Then, suddenly, about to days ago I wake up to a whole mouth full of sores. Not one or two, but like 8. Is this freaky? Has this ever happened to anybody before? If so what did you do?

Posted by Optional on 28/12/2010 at 08:37

I have had recurrent mouth ulcers since I was a teenager. Neither my doctor or dentist can provide an explanation as to why. I am healthy, not stressed or anxious! In the past I've had up to 10 at any one time. This is very depressing and painful. I recently read about stomach ulcers and good results with those using Ginger. So as an experiment found some ground Ginger in my cupboard and put it directly onto my ulcers 2-3 times in the day. Amazingly they shrank overnight and I have been ulcer free since. If I see a little red dot appearing in my mouth which is the beginning of a new one I simply zap it with Ginger and it disappears literally overnight. It is just so fantastic to know that I have finally found something that works, and.costs nothing too

Thing is i read on the internet it could be mouth cancer, and ive asked my mum to book me into the dentist and them to have a look, they replied i could have a blood test if i want. Does anyone have any idea why this keeps happening and should i have the blood test???

Hi, This is kind of embarrassing, but I have a few problems that are happening all at once. One once in a while when I brush my teeth my gums bleed. It has been happening alot more lately than usual. I have not been for a teeth cleaning in a long time, but you could never tell because my teeth are really nice. I have a panic disorder which makes it hard for me to see any doctor. The second thing is that my mouth is breaking out...especially when I ear spicy foods or smoke a cigarette. It really sucks...my tongue swells sometimes too....I know this is alot but I was thinking gingivitis from not being to a dentist in a while, but does that cause the irritations and sometimes ulcers in my mouth. Im getting very nervous and cry often because I just dont know what it is and am sooooo dumb and scared to visit a doctor...anyone please if you have advice please let me know. Thank you

i have never had a long term problem with mouth ulsers as a such. of course i occasioally get them like at the moment hense how i found this site lol this page was mega useful =) shame there wasn't more tips on how to deal with it but then again, most tips come from the comments lol i guess my tips would be alwats bruh twice a day minimum. if your gonna eat something that could get stuck between your teeth, make sure to floss afterwards or at night. a reasonanbly hot drink helps to numb it and it's the same with an ice cold drink. my personal choice is a nice hot cuppa milk with a bit of suger =) also smooths your throat if it's sore. another technique i sometimes use if i get angry with it is to blow your mouth up with your breath and force the air to wherever it is you have it. "WARNING! it can be rather painful for a few seconds when you do it". 30secs max usually for me but afterwards you really don't feel it much at all. if it starts to hurt a bit again then give it another go. it shouldn't hurt as much as the first time. depends how long you leave it. it's a radical approach which i think works but if your major sensitive i wouldn't advise it. hope this helps you all =) xxx mike p xxx

This was very useful, i have suffered with ulcers from a very young age and when you have them hardly anything helps! Iv seen tonnes of specialists but recently found out the the main reason i get them is because my body is ridiculously low in B12, taking supplements everyday and cutting out salty foods have made a huge difference and now i only get them after biting my lip or when im run down and generally ill! Hope the rest of you find cures!

Posted by patricia on 14/11/2010 at 08:25

I have had this problem for more than 3 years. What has helped me initially doesn't work the 2nd time around so I have to find new solutions. These are what have helped: Solcoseryl paste(dry ulcer first, apply, then put cotton if you can keep from swallowing it), Debactirol, Prolix and Orofar (mix half and half of 5 ml. and gargle), Virgin Coconut oil (gargle or put on cotton and place next to ulcer), tetracycline and virlix gargle, Iterac and Virlix, Kamillosan Spray (I keep this with me all the time to spray before eating), Vit. E (squeeze a capsule of Vit. E on cotton and place against ulcer), Silver Colloid gargle, Green tea gargle, Maalox, Mycostatin, Nexium and what is known in the Philippines as "tawas" or alum, an astringent, crystalline double sulfate of aluminum and potassium. When it was really bad I had steroid shots. In 3 days the sores on my throat were gone and I was able to eat a buffet breakfast. To keep me from hopelessness, I recite the promises of God in the Bible about healing. :^)

Hi. Ever since i was 6 i started to get tonsilitus alot which then stopped at the age of 8. Now ever since i was 9 i get severe mouth ulcers. i get them usually every 3 weeks, and they can last for nearly up to 2 weeks. But when i get them i usually get about 10 at a time and also on my lips. They are really painful and they stop me from eating, going to school and from cleaning my teeth. I have had lots of different medications like creams, mouthwashes and tablets. I am now taking antibiotics. Ive had plenty of blood tests for cancer and diseases but they come back clear! There must be something wrong!

I'm going to give it a while and see do they disappear. I have been told to take GENTIAN VIOLET you cant get this in Chemists anymore but you can get it on-line!!! If they dont clear up soon I will try. BONJELLA ONCE is also very good but its expensive (between £7 - £8 in chemist) for 2 treatments!!but i've discovered if you live in the UK and there is a POUNDLAND near you you can get a box for £1 (YES ONE POUND) If you get them from stopping smoking BANANAS are supposed to be good, ive just started eating them also apparently teh have plent of Vitamin B6 and B12. hope this helps

Very good site, ane I love to read I am not the only one who suffers so much of mouth ulcers. I have them since I was childe but nothing and never helped to heal them faster. Once one or two are gone I will get another four or even eitgh :( Sometimes it takes me months to be mouth ulcers free...... and for how long? Maybe some weeks and they are back. I will try that toothpaste which was suggested here and will let know how it goes :) All the best guys and hope your ulcers will vanish soon too and forever!!!!!!!!

I am 100% certain now that my ulcers come after staying up late at night! I have actually timed them and can guarantee that if I stay awake for a party or through traveling I will get an ulcer 24 hours later. Why is this?

For mouth Ulcer's you can take becosule capsules or just open the capsule & put some capsule power to ulcer!! this really works!!!

I've been having mouth ulcers for years and I have to admit that throughout my experience with this discomfort the only thing that seems to work for me is to get plenty of sleep and power naps. I've tried all kinds of remedies from herbal to antiviral medicines. These ulcers seem to be a result from a reduced immune system caused most the time from stress. I'm a teacher and these things are pushing e to find another line of work. Yes! its that painful. I really long for a medical breakthrough for the matter. But for now, I'm learning to live with them. Good luck to all

Oh my GAWD!!! So last week I bit the side of my mouth like 5 times, now I have three ulcers which I can barely open my mouth. Then the next day I burnt the top of my mouth. Not a good thing, because now thats like a huge ulcer. I've been eating ice cream non stop to keep it from feeling like its going to rip apart from opening my mouth. I do have the paste that my doctor prescribed me, but I only put that on at night because I cant stand the feeling it makes on my teeth and mouth. I just haven't been able to find the rinse for ulcers. :( This article was very informative! Thanks for writing it!!!

I feel sorry for all of you who at the moment have these painful mouth ulcers. I used to suffer from them until I discovered a recipe for my own toothpaste and since then do not seem bothered by them unless I bite my cheek or burn my mouth with hot food. Here is my recipe which incidently will give you whiter teeth and stronger gums. 1 teaspoon of sea salt, 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda, 1 teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide solution 3% and 1 teaspoon of boiled water. Mix this and do not use it for at least 6 hours. Then this small paste should last you about four days. Dab onto your brush and brush your teeth normally.I have used this for the past 10 years and my teeth have very little plaque and are very clean looking. Good luck.

I was diagnosed with a mouth ulcer in the back of my mouth, on my right cheek, next to my gums- where my wisdom teeth will be. But the lymph node on the right side is very swollen and painful, and the right side of my throat, and back of mouth hurt and are sore when I swallow. Is this all associated with having a mouth ulcer?

As a smoker I have next to no ulcers, 1 small in say six months, when I give up I get them with in a week - 3 to 10 at a time in any part of the mouth, which as you know kill, I have found that using treatments only seems to make them worse and I get more trying to stop them, I can not eat and it effects my job which is speaking a lot, I have been given up smoking for 5 months now and every other week has been really bad, I have had loads of test, checks for diet, health, reactions, all fine, so I am now thinking of going back to smoking as I know within days all will go away, If having a few fags a day lets be lead a normal life and eat well, this must be better for me ?

I bit my lip while eating sometime last week. And now it has come up in a massive ulcer. It is very irritating, and i fell too embarressed to go out with friends. My parents are sure that it will be gone soon, but what i've always thought to help me is buying some flaked sea salt. This is brilliant for opening up the wound, and numbing it. Usually it goes in about a week when i do this.

I have one now, that is healing that I have had for 5 days. I did some research on the interet and found that gargling with baking soda every 30 mins. (which for me is imporssible to do since I work five days a week) helps. I was doing this on Sun. but not every 30 mins. I even used my head and formed a thick paste, which is extremely horrible and salty tasting two days ago, and viola the pain redness and most of the white pus went away. Good luck in ridding these things.

I have ulcers right now underneath tongue, gums and behind lips. im using 'Gengigel mouthwash' £7.00 in boots. Its a herbal mouthwash and is hyaluronic acid which is produced in the mouth anyway and helps with healing of tissues and inflammation. its only the third day but its definitely reduced inflammation as my gums were very red and seems to be decreasing the pain.

I regularly get cluster mouth ulcers and have done for many years. At the moment I have 3 on my tongue and a huge one on my throat...I am in complete agony and nothing seems to help. In the past I've had 18 mouth ulcers at once...now they seem to come in a minimum of 3 but generally no more than 9. My diet seems to play a big part in the cause of them, as does stress...that said its often only a slight change in things for me to get them. I simply wish they would go away...eating and talking only makes things worse...feel like hiding under the duvet until they have gone :(

I have developed mouth ulcers about three years ago. They flare up each month before my period and along comes the swelling of the lymph nodes. I have talked to several doctors about the issue, was tested, and nothing was found. Is this perhaps a hormonal problem? I have never seen a case as bad as mine. At times i cannot eat or speak for days because of the pain and even drinking water is painful. (my blood was tested and they checked for heliobacter pilori. I tested negative for everything. Please help!

I find SOOTHAGEL works really well, it doesnt sting when it goes on and doesnt really taste of much, but seems to take the pain away without the usual temporary numbing that Bonjela gives. I find it clears ulcers up really quickly. Unfortunately it is fairly expensive for such a tiny tube, but its available in most pharmacies and worth it if you are suffering!

I used to have massive outbreaks of ulcers my whole life until I discovered mouthwash!! I went to the doctor so much but they could never help me. They were really big, crater-like ulcers (huge holes in my mouth) and I would get a whole mouthfull of them - often having 15-20 at a time, about every 6 weeks. Then my brother suggested I use mouthwash.. I haven't had an outbreak since, and it's been about 6 years. I still get the odd one when I am stressed, but nothing more mouthwash and some Oracort doesn't sort out quickly. Anything is good.. I use listerine or colgate stuff, whateva is on special. The doc said something about them being a bacterial infection, but offered no solution, so I guess the mouthwash kills the bacteria that causes them. Hope this helps some ppl.

I have had recurrent Mouth Ulcers for 15 or so years now, I get between 1-6 ulcers at a time and they last for around 2 weeks....as soon as one lot go, another lot starts to appear. They are so annoying and naturally painful. My specialist diagnosed me as having crohns, but after a few years of thinking I had crohns and taking numerous amounts of medication etc..., another specialist told me I don't have crohns due to my sound level of fitness, I have now for the third time been referred to a oral specialist who are currently doing tests (which the previous specialists did but found nothing). The only thing that really gets shut of them (but is no means a cure) is steriods which where perscibed to me when the doctors thought I had crohns, but come with dreadful side affects if taken long term. The only over counter stuff i've found useful is ambesol liquid which numbs them for a short while, and Airwaves chewing gum helps too. Whilst on holiday in the states I bought some "Wallgreens" Cancker sore liquid from the Wallgreen Pharmacy chain which really numbed everything for ages, so if your out there it could be worth a try, but seek medical advice first.

I've been suffering with ulcers on my tongue for about 3 years now and when it started it was horrible pain and was over 1/2 of my tongue. Out of desparation I tried a medication that I had received years before for a sore on my gums... amazingly it worked! And they healed up quickly. Although they do recurr, I am able to heal them quickly and they aren't as painful It's a dental paste called Oracort. And it's best to put it on at night after you brush your teeth. I also put baking soda on the spot first as it seems to help with the healing of the more severe ulcers... You can ask your dentist or doctor about the Oracort product.

No-one will believe me when I say I started to get ulcers when I stopped smoking 4 months ago. At least I know now Im not going nuts. Vitamin B is doing nothing for me. Found herbal teas relaxing (probably in the mind). Honey soothes, melted and swirled in mouth, or added with tea, perhaps has natural aneasthetic properties and antibiotic properties as well.?? Otherwise just living on paracetomal and hoping this goes away.

I've suffered from recurrent mouth ulcers since I was a child. When I was in my twenties a doctor suggested i take up smoking (!!@*&??!) I did in fact take up smoking when in my thirties (...) and YES the ulcers did improve!!! I've never been able to find out why this is so. Now in my fifties I have tried numerous times to quit smoking. Each time the ulcers come back full force - the pain is so bad I start to smoke again! I'm giving it another go...had my last cigarette a week ago (Monday) By the Friday the ulcers had started up - Am currently in great pain (eating, drinking, talking etc. etc.)Off to the doc for painkillers tomorrow...I REALLY don't want to start smoking again - It's hard enough to cope with the psychological aspects of giving up without the xtra pain! Have tried every remedy/seen every specialist, but no-one seems to have any sort of answer to this problem.

Mouth Ulcers / Aaphthous Ulcers are lesions caused in the mucous membrane of the mouth and lips. They could be located anywhere inside the mouth, under the tongue or at the base of the gums. They can be very painful and can make eating and talking difficult. They develop due to various reasons, like trauma, infection, drugs, deficiencies or any medical condition. Research in natural therapies has paved the way for effective treatment of this condition. They provide relief from the acute pain and swelling caused due to ulceration of the oral mucosa.* They also speed up the healing process, thereby preventing any secondary infection.* Supplemented by vitamins and minerals they address the nutritional deficiencies that are a common cause of aphthous ulcers.* Customers report a marked reduction in relapses of ulcers after taking natural therapies. Similar protocols are provided by Biogetica.

Test yourself for coeliac disease (Gluten intolerance). I suffered with recurring mouth ulcers for years and as soon as I went 'gluten free' the problem went away. Following a gluten free diet can be tough but anything is better then multiple ulcers on tongue and throat.. If you do have ulcers avoid toothpaste with SLS, try Weleda. Hope it helps someone!

Hello there. I have been plagued by mouth ulcers for many years, although I have significantly reduced the occurances over the last few years. I recommend having a read of http://www.cankersoresolutions.com which details many steps to prevent and cure mouth ulcers. It defintely helped me.

Posted by Mylo on 21/01/2010 at 02:14

I've had them for years, not as bad recently. I gave up cigs a couple of years ago and they got severe!! I gave up again at the start of the new year (3 weeks) and guess what I have 12 huge ulcers!! Definitely a cause. I also have common cold symptoms!!

Wow it feels great knowing there's a whole bunch of people who are same as me. I constantly have ulcers, my lips are always swollen to the point where people constantly ask "Why are your lips so fat". Currently I probably have about 10 and most are concentrated on the same place, some are even on my tongue. Sometimes the embarassment if my lips makes me fake sick to stay home :/.

I'm always getting ulcers, especially if I haven't been Eating healthily or have eaten too much orange juice. I found a super strength gel in lloyds pharmacy, it works well and literally numbs the place where the ulcer but you have to try not to swallow it cos it's not pleasant, which I sometimes found hard when I had an ulcer near the back of my mouth :( . But anyway found salt water worked quite well too in cleaning ur mouth out.

Posted by Sophie Louise on 05/10/2009 at 12:00

Ulcers are hidious. I have got 12 at the same time once. I curently have around 8, which is normal for me. The doctors blame it on my braces, though I have the same amount each month to what I did before getting braces. I am going to try the Cotton Bud things, and see if they help me at all. P.S the comments on this page, are way better than the actual advice you have given.

I have been having mouth ulcers since i was about 5. I used to get about rwo a month and they would become bigger and holes would appear in them casuing severe pain however i have now been receiving vitamin B12 injection every 12 weeks for about 10 years now and it has really helped i still get the odd one normally on the side of my tongue so i cant ear or talk but these are very infrequently now thankfully.

**********Hi all******* if you live in the UK try the little cotton buds filled with a liquid from Boots as Catherine recommends...it really helps....instantly...is for one use only...it covers the ulcer with a thin membrane and it stays there for couple of days...you dont feel the pain at all!!!!!i've try them in the past...the first time i thought it was a miracle...the secondc time didnt last for long but ill try them again...is the best medicine in the market for mouth ulcer sufferers..highly recommended..PS i dont know if there is anything equivalent in other countrys but you might find somewhere...i heard they have something similar in the US

I have had recurring mouth ulcers ever since I can remember, I am now 27. They seem to get worse when ever I have citrus fruit. I can no longer eat oranges (including orange juice), mandarins, pineapple (even on Hawaiian pizza) or anything with citric acid. I love all these fruits but whenever I have them I get these damn things. I had a mouth full of orange juice on the weekend and now as a result I have a huge ulcer at the back of my mouth which is practically covering my back tooth. I do have Vegemite in my cupboard (even though I live in Toronto)so I will try that. Also in Australia, you can buy a product called SM-33. It is a brown liquid that you dip a cotton bud in and then put that on the ulcer. The pain is intense and will bring tears to your eyes but it seems to work too. But if anyone has reoccurring ulcers, try to stop eating citrus fruits or anything that includes a lot of citric acid.

Just a message coz i get these ulcers aswell but not as bad as some of use getting maltiple ones. If any of use live in Australia try using vegimite it works. Put it on around 2 times its gona cause you a hell of a pain but within 2 days ur ulcer will die down and it will start going away..Vegimite is a Australian traditional spread that u put on toast for breakfast it tastes like crap but at the end of the day ur not puting any chemicals into ur mouth its totally safe..

Ever since I can remember I've been getting ulcers every few weeks... I used to dread the winter especially as I'd get up to 5 in one go!! Tried everything from salt water, gels, pastes etc etc... Thought my prayers had been answered when I went into Boots and discovered these little cotton buds filled with a liquid. You snap off the end, and hold the bud on your ulcer for 10 seconds. It stings for a few seconds, but after that your ulcer doesnt hurt at all, and goes away within a few days. Bonjela have released their version aswell - 'Bonjela Once' although they are pricey (about

I dont normally get ulcers, but i have a really painful one at the moment and it is really small, i have had it for a while now ( 1 week) and it has got a bit less painful but it is still there. I asked my family if they have ever had problems with mouth ulcers and they said that they never had them constantly, my friend get them very often and normally with 4-5 at a time . She also asked her family and they said they did used to suffer but not as bad now. I hope this helped : )

Eat curd it makes ur ulcer cool and ur ulcer will vanish, few days early

Posted by Anonymous on 21/04/2009 at 08:50

My advice is to fill a cup up with warm water and then add 3 teaspoons of salt. Stir it with a spoon as this dissolves the salt. Swirl it round your mouth and then spit it out. It may sting a little. Repeat until the cup is empty. Follow these steps three times a day until it gradually clears up. REMEMBER: DO NOT SWALLOW IT!
