Headache during sex

Headaches during sex sound like a joke, but they are not funny to anyone who experiences them. Mysteriously, the headache may occur on some occasions but not on others, even with the same sexual technique. Sexual intercourse, or just masturbation, may bring on the pain.

Who gets headaches during sex?

  • Sexual headaches can occur at all ages, but are most common in the early 20s and between 35–45 years of age (Neurology 2003;61:796–800).
  • Men are three times more likely than women to have sexual headaches.
  • Sexual headaches tend to occur during male, but not female, orgasm, and during female but not male masturbation.
  • Sexual headaches are also more common in people who already suffer from migraine or tension headache.

Why the headache occurs

Sex can cause various sorts of headache.
  • At the moment of orgasm there can be a sudden, severe pain. This is probably due to contraction of some of the small blood vessels in the brain, similar to migraine, and in fact half the people with this type of headache are also migraine sufferers. This pain generally lasts less than an hour, but may be gone in 10 minutes or linger for a few hours. It may be throbbing, dull or stabbing.
  • Less commonly, as sexual excitement increases, some people experience a dull, cramping, tight feeling at the back of the head. This is probably due to excessive contraction of the muscles of the neck.
  • If you suffer from migraine, you may find that sex triggers a migraine attack. This headache will be identical to your ‘usual’ migraine. It occurs after sex, but not during sex.

Some people have only one of these headaches, but many people have a combination, so they experience a headache that increases with sexual excitement, and culminates in an explosive headache at orgasm.

Often, the headaches occur in bouts lasting a few weeks, and then disappear for a while.
Other causes of headache during sex are pills for the treatment of erection problems, such as Viagra (sildenafil), Cialis (tadalafil) and Levitra (vardenafil). Headache is one of their side effects.

What you can do about it

  • If you have severe headache at orgasm, you must see your doctor to check that there is no serious reason for the headache. A brain scan is recommended as a precaution (Update 2006;73(2);10). Your doctor may then be able to prescribe a drug such as propranolol to prevent the headache.
  • If you mainly have the dull headache at the back of the neck, make a deliberate effort to relax your neck muscles. This usually relieves it.
  • Try intensifying your sexual excitement more gradually. This works in about 50% of men with sexual headache.
  • Most people find they are more prone to these headaches when they are tired or under stress, attempting intercourse for the second or third time in close succession, or when they are using an uncomfortable or strenuous position. Try to avoid these situations!
  • Sexual headaches are also more likely if you are in poor physical shape, overweight and with high blood pressure – so if you become fitter they may improve.

im worried about my partner, hes been getting these headaches on and off now for about 2weeks. To the point where hes unable to stay sexually aroused. hes symptons most relate to the "dull ache on the back of neck" which as he gets more excited the pain increases. I dont think the advice in regards to "just relax your neck muscles" is a valid response to this dilemna. There must be something medically that we can do right? i hate seeing him suffer like this

Wow, I thought I was the only one to experience this problem. The first time is happened it came on after laying sod. The next after bending over to pick something up. Two day ago I was having intercourse and right before ejaculating I had a real head banger. I thought my head was going to explode. After this happened I really felt depressed thinking this is how its going to be. Saw a doctor today who said I had all the classic symptom of migraines. He is sending me for an MRI and MRA also blood test for Lymes. After reading all the post here I am not so depressed. Sounds temporal. I'm going to try the green tea thing as well. Thanks for sharing everyone.

I get really bad headaches, they start fine at the start of masturbation and towards the pointf Ograsm/Cuming they are really bad. They last for 20 minutes after orgasm and then fade away. They are like a throbbing pain and the throbbing matches my heart beat.

I just started gettin these headaches and man do they suck...I get the stabbing pain at the left side of the back of the head and it spreads all over...i experienced one last night(17th june) and the second one tonight...both lasted for aboot 10 mins and after the stabbing subsided,i got the throbbing at the temples on both sides of my head...gonna consult my doc on monday and see about gettin a beta blocker(propanolol) which prevents the widenin of blood vessels on the surface of the brain(wide blood vessels on the surface of the brain is ur average migraine)...there is no history of brain problems in my family so am hopin it is only down to stress or high blood pressure...had a passing notion that ma g/f was usin voodoo but she says she isn't,lol...is she lying??? lol =)

I've been getting headaches off and on for a while. It happens as my excitement builds as I masturbate, but has only happened once during actual intercourse. Once it has started, it takes a while to subside and I notice that it throbs. The pain is located near the base of the skull to the right side of my spine. I have not noticed this pain during other exertion. My father died of a burst aneurysm in his brainstem. (in his 70's) Should I be concerned about the throbbing?

For me, this headache seems to be affected by my environment. In one country, I'll constantly get a headache should I try masturbating. In the other, it never happens. It is the oddest, and one of the most painful things, I've ever experienced.

Posted by Optional on 08/06/2010 at 09:02:46 am

I usually masterbate twice a day the pain hits the back of my head in the second one and its unbearable

I have been suffering from tension head aches for the last couple of months, and the last 3 times i have had sex just as im about to climax a get a servere pain moving up my neck into my head, face and eyes. The pain is so intense it brings me to tears. It normally lasts for a few hours but the pain gets less intense. What could be causing this?

Posted by Optional on 28/05/2010 at 08:56:46 am

so if i try abstinance. It may work and prevent further headaches! ill try that! lol . If it still accures i might see a doctor. thx for the info

Hi I am an eighteen year-old girl and have been very scared ever since I got a headache two nights ago after masturbating (it was standing up, I do not know if that makes a difference or not) that will not go away. I am healthy and fit but I do have a pain condition called fibromyalgia. However, I've masturbated before and never had this problem. I've read that it actually more common among women than men to have pain after masturbating. Is this really true? And how long does the pain last? Signed, Scared and confused

Posted by Confused on 20/05/2010 at 09:40:47 pm

I am a little scared to say the least. I did not know this existed. My partner and I for the last 4 years have averaged sex once a day since meeting and never was there a problem, I masturbate maybe 3 times a week, only for the last year or so, and no problems. All of a sudden 3 days ago, I was masturbateing in the morning after little or no sleep the night before as I now wear nicotine patches to quit cigarettes, which I quit 3 days ago and as I reached climax, I got a sudden stabbing pain in my right temple. When we had sex last night, the exact same thing happened for both orgasms. This has happened so suddenly and it scares me to think it may be something mor serious. I masturbated this morning, mainly to see if it was still there and it is. I dont want to be scared of sex, my man and I love it too much, I guess it is off to the doctors to check.

Im 39. i was masterbating one night and got serious pain in the back of my head. Same thing happens with sex when i come. The pain last about ten minutes. I dont suffer from migrains or serious headaches.

HEY EVERYONE, I HAD THE SEX HEADACHE SINCE GOING THRU PUVERTY AND HAD STARTED TO MASTURBATE ON AN ON-GOING BASIS. THE FIRST TIME IT ACTUALLY TOOK ME STRAIGHT TO THE HOSPITAL SINCE IT WAS SO BAD THAT IT MADE ME VOMIT. THE PAIN STARTS JUST ABOUT WHEN YOU ARE ABOUT TO CUM. THE PAIN STARTS IN THE BACK OF THE NECK(RIGHT SIDE) MOVING TOWARDS THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE HEAD AND FEELING PRESSURE BEHIND THE EYE. AS YOU CUM YOU FEEL THE PALPITATIONS OF THE ORGASM IN YOUR BRAIN AS OPPOSE TO THE PENIS. I HAVE MASTURBATED SO MANY TIMES AND HAD SEX RIGHT THRU THE HEADACHES TO UNDERSTAND IT BETTER. THE ONLY WAY TO GET RID OF IT IS IF YOUR NECK IS STRAIGHT ALIGNED WITH YOUR BACK AND HEAD AND YOU BREATH DEEP SO THE BLOOD IS NOT RUSHING TOO FAST INTO YOUR BRAIN. IT WORKS AND YOU WILL NOT HAVE THIS HEADACHES EVER AGAIN IF YOU DONT ALLOW TO MUCH BLOOD PRESSURE TO BUILD IN THE BRAIN. THIS ONLY HAPPENS WHEN TOO MUCH TENSION IS BUILD ON THE NECK AND POOR BREATHING!!!

This happened to me very recently with my girlfriend. When I was 19 I had a bout of migraine headaches due to stress in my life, and I had to take medication for it. I have never had a migraine since. Since that time I have had little to no headaches (serious or otherwise). When I started my current relationship I began to have regular intercourse again, sometimes more than once in a day. The first few times I did not get a headache. After that, they happened almost every time during sex. It would start before orgasm, but really manifest itself during ejaculation. Sometimes if we had sex before we went to sleep, I would wake up and still have a headache. Most of the time, however, it only lasts for an hour or so. I can also say, as a former migraine sufferer, that these sex headaches are mild in comparison. I had never heard of sex headaches before, but normally I abstain from it unless I am in a serious relationship. I'm glad to know that it's more than likely not serious.

Ok I guess this is more common than I thought. So I got the sex headache too. Heres my deal. Im a 24 year old male, Im inshape, run and workout. Im trying to figure this thing out. I did a 5mile run on tuesday then I did weights on Wednesday and while being jacked off on thursday had the most painfull headache ever. Pain radiates from where spine joins head all the way to front of head. My headache has not stoped. Im going on five days of my pain. The pain has gotten better, but is still not gone. I feel there must be some link between my neck and this problem. My neck always sorta bothers me, still when I wake up that sort of thing. I had done some strenuous abb workout the day before onset. I wonder if the tension caused in my neck is some how making this happen. The other thing is, I had been ummmm using my equipment alot the days before the headache. Probably ejaculating 2-3 times a day the previous days and I was on my second time for that day when the headache developed. Still trying to figure this out, its horrible. What im also intrigued by is that morning wood doesnt have the same affect on my head, the top head, lol, as a sexually aroused wood.

During sexual arousal or orgasm I experience several severe, painful and distressing symptoms which have caused me to mostly avoid sex or fake it. They are a severe migraine headache which lasts up to 20 minutes or so, rapid palpitating heart and abdominal spasms which combine to make me feel I'm at deaths door! These symptoms have persisted for years. Every doctor I have asked say they have no clue and have never heard of these symptoms. I have taken Propranolol for years because I have palpitations but no diagnosed heart disease. I have read that Propranolol for migraine headaches associated with orgasm has been prescribed but obviously it doesn't work for me. Otherwise, I am in excellent health. Does anyone else have such symptoms or even heard of them? Any insight, suggestions? I've searched the internet and haven't found anything like what I experience.

I've suffered from migraine for years but had the first one of these sex headaches recently, happened at the point of orgasm and was so sudden and intense it was awful! One of the worse pains I've ever felt and I've given birth with no pain relief! Hopefully it won't happen again as it's a bit of a turn off wondering if you're going to be left with a blinding migraine complete with the nausea and vomiting that goes with it whenever you have sex!

I am a 36 year old male, and 2 weeks ago...i had severe headache occur at the back of my head during orgasm while masturbating. I was also holding my breath, and sort of hunched over. This was the first time this has happened. The intensity was that of a brain freeze, lasting only 10 seconds or so...starting at the point of ejaculation/orgasm and increasing with intensity to the point of excruciating pain and then subsiding (like a brain freeze). it was located from ear to ear and from the base of the neck. After the initial 10 second pain...i felt ok...no nausea, no dizziness, no sweating, tingling, no blurred vision etcetra...However, the next morning after getting up, i experienced a headache in that same region...just not as intense...advil did the trick. The headaches have lasted 2 weeks...they started to get better but are still there, and are not just in the back of the head...some pressure is experienced in the temples, as well as areas in the back of the head. Has anyone experienced the same exact situation? What are the chances that this is a sentinel leak (Aneurysm)?

Masturbation makes you feel headache. Masturbate also makes your brain become dull. I suggest you to drink 2 cups of green tea after masturbate. Green tea will remove the headache. The headache cause by masturbation is different from the usual headache that you got when you have fever. After masturbate, the headache felt inside the skull. I found that green tea to cure the headache by coincidence. I have suffered from masturbation headache more than a decade. Here is my story how I meet the green tea. One day I went to other country as a tourist and stayed in a 5 stars hotel. It was the first time I stayed in a 5 stars hotel. In the hotel I found green tea. I am not familiar with its taste. After going home from holiday I bought the same green tea. I masturbate as usual many times in a week and I drank the tea. After drinking I found that my headache diminished with one cup and vanish after the second cup. I was a bit surprised. First I thought it was coincidence but every time I drink the green tea after masturbate I found that my headache diminished or prevented before it obviously felt. Here I give you the link about the green tea that I usually drink. It is Japanese OSK green tea. I recommend you to drink high quality Japanese green tea like this one because I am not sure about other low grade green tea. I masturbate thousands times from my childhood and I have suffered from headache more than 10 year before I found green tea. Thank to god who makes me meet the green tea by coincidence. Believe my story. Try the green tea if you feel headache, tiredness, dreamless sleep, dehydration-like fatigue (actually it is not dehydration but you might feel like dehydrated after masturbate for a long period of time e.g. after months or years, even if drink many cups of plain water won’t cure). Green tea helps the above problems but it does not cure erectile dysfunction. Tips for preparing the OSK green tea to maximize its benefits. (1) Boil the tap water (2) Put the tea bag inside the cup (a cup which is medium or big size) (3) Pour the hot water into the cup. It is better that the hot water hit tea bag while you pour it. (4) Use a spoon. Stir it left to right or right to left. Left to right and back to left is counted as one time. After that from left again move to right and move back to left is counted as 2 times. Stir at least 160 times or more or 200 times until it is deep green. (5) Drink it while it is still hot or warm. Finish it while it is still warm. After masturbate I don’t recommend you to drink it if it is already cool. (6) Make the second cup and prepare it as instructed above and drink it while it is still hot or warm. Below is not my blog. It show the picture of the OSK green tea. http://myyummycruise.blogspot.com/2007/07/japanese-green-tea.html

is masterbating while you have a headache bad I havent felt right since

Posted by MJC on 02/01/2010 at 05:59:00 am

These pains are indeed intense. I have had three bouts of them over the course of the last three years. For me, they seem to be correlated with having worked (or played) for intense periods at a computer screen. I believe that the neck muscles must have been under strain for these extended periods, which triggered truly horrible neck muscle spasms/headaches during later orgasms. The solution may be to take a rest from or fix an ergonomic problem with the computer. Did anyone else notice such a link?

My husband is going on 2.5 years dealing with this. We've had 2 scans done with 2 seperate specialists and nothing! He's been on Depakote for awhile now, but it doesn't stop the pain-just dulls it. He had an episode last week that scared me to death. Doggy style seems to be the killer position here for people going through this. Typically if he feels one coming on we'll just stop, but he said this one came on too fast and he didn't even realize it was going to happen. As soon as he hit orgasm, next thing I knew he was on the floor screaming and crying....none of them have ever brought him to tears. I seriously thought he'd had an aneurism or something and was about to die he was screaming so much. I'm glad I found this forum because sex headaches haven't been brought up by any of the doctors and didn't even know it was a condition. Anyone with more info or solutions to this, please post. This really puts a strain on some marriages and we are both almost scared to have sex anymore.

I had this problem about 2 years ago for about 2 months. I think it started when I had a bad head cold, then it seemed to just go away. I think partly because I relaxed more during sex. I was getting exactly as described:- "experience a headache that increases with sexual excitement, and culminates in an explosive headache at orgasm." Anyway it went away, but about 10 days ago it has returned- again I have a nasty head cold and I just hope it goes away when the cold goes!

...have experienced this in 3 out 4 of the last times I've masturbated. Totally new and frustrating - never happened to me before. Initially I put it down to a pinched nerve or something but having read the other posts, I guess it's this 'sex-headache' thing. :-( Brilliant write-up here, and contributions from other browsers of this page made interesting reading too.

Hi all I have had this problem for last 2 years, first time I got this severe headache during intercourse I thought I was going to die as pain was so bad, went to doctors who sent me to have brain scan, results were clear and neorologist said it is a condition known as 'sex headache' which is common in young men. It doen't happen all the time which is a relief, but lately has returned with a vengance, I would like to stop this happening as it is very scarey, I will be going back to docs, there must be some help out there somewhere!!!!

Posted by Sufferer on 04/09/2009 at 05:52:00 pm

I've had these - they are know as Thunderclap headaches or Coital Cephalgia for a technical name (Google it!!). BOY are they intense!! But don't worry they are not aneurysms or brain haemorrhages! Doc advised taking anti inflamitories before hand helps to relax muscles (except the one needed!!) Mine is neck problems causing tension headaches. Try to relax and move your neck if you feel it stiffen - not the one in your pants, (that should already be moving!) the one near your shoulders! Slow down a bit and change positions so you can support your neck - spoons is a good one! - Don't try doggie style - it kills when you come!! Hope this helps - a long time sufferer!!

i get what i would suppose are the same head aches that everyone else is talking about. im 19 and i am pretty sure i was 16 when i got the first one and it was during masturbation. it was in what felt like the back right of my head and in was so severe that i couldn't finish. since then i have had the same head ache and similar ones during sex. one time i believe i felt it behind my left eye but it did seem like if i slowed down or stopped for a minute it would go away. some times it would not come back and sometimes it would come right back when i started again. when i was younger it was really scary, i would get them occasionally and when it first happened i didn't know if i would ever be able to be sexually active again without the pains, but the next day it was not there and i have always been embarrassed to let anyone know except for my girlfriend because she would be able to tell when it happened because i would stop grab my back of my head and hold my eyes shut. by far the worst headache i have ever felt. seems like something i may have to just deal with but i would like to know exactly what causes it.

Posted by Rosemary on 05/06/2009 at 06:06:00 pm

I've suffered from migraines for years, which are usually behind one of my eyes. Then, two years ago I had an exciting fling with a new partner and for about a week I got a sudden and intense headache at the back of my head, like the base of my skull, both when masturbating alone and when having sex with him. Sometimes it happened right at orgasm, other times it was as I was getting close. The second time I googled it and ended up in the ER to rule out an aneurysm. After about a week they stopped. Then recently I again have a new partner who is really turning me on and now these headaches are back. It's horrible because I really want to have an orgasm and it's like I'm an animal in some experiment that if I go for what I want I'm going to be punished with an electric shock or something. I have tried midrin and maxalt preventatively and they didn't work. Today I'm getting a prescription for indomehtacin, we'll see if it works. Yesterday I got the headache again but this time it was in the front behind one eye, just like my regular migraines. It's really awful and I can't wait for it to stop so I can just enjoy sex again.

Posted by Anonymous on 27/04/2009 at 03:33:00 pm

I had such a bad sex headache after masturbation, that I ended up in the ER. They did two CT scans and a spinal tap. Nothing serious was found. I was perscribed Verapamil and Indometacin. Frankly, I am terrified to orgasam. I am afraid to see if the meds work, for fear of that headache coming back. Actually, it was 4 days ago and it is still hanging on. Not fun!

Posted by Ray on 26/04/2009 at 11:56:00 am

I've suffered from headaches in the past but never during sex. These have started recently and are very worrying as they are so painful and seem to focus on the left hand side of my head. I'll being going to see the docs asap.

I just started experiencing these headaches in the last week. I've never had a migraine before and it literally felt like the front of my head was about to explode. The first time it went away relatively quickly, although I couldn't stand up and couldn't see for a little while. Yesterday the pain disipated and then came back in full force for the entire day and is still thrumming away now. The skin above my eye feels like it's been bruised to touch. Is this normal...?!?!

Posted by stephen on 22/04/2009 at 02:46:00 pm

I am getting these severe headaches every single time i orgasm now. very bad times.. went to the doctor and they gave me beta blockers, they definately help dull the pain but they do not get rid of it. also the side effects such as an increase in bruising does not help my life style as i regulary practice thai boxing. but if bruising doesnt worry you that much I would recommend taking beta blockers. Right now im on indometacin and it doesnt seem to be doing a hell of alot. the only difference is i dont wake up with a headache as often. Also haven't noticed any side effects Hope this helps!

everyone experiencing these types of headaches should consult with a physician.in most cases theyre uncomfortable but harmless, but in the rare case it could be a sign of a sentinel bleed wich is a indicator of a possible brain hemmorage

Posted by ouch on 15/04/2009 at 08:37:00 pm

This is terrifying... It began occuring to me recently and im afraid to orgasm now. Its always been a way to relieve stress and now im consumed with tension by my fear to orgasm. If anyone know how to dull or prevent the pain it would be greatly appreciated

I started getting headaches 4 years ago when I started dating a man that I love and am so attracted to. My headaches are at the front of my head between my eyes and they don't happen until after he pulls out... and then wham!! the worst pain ever. The last one lasted all night and I still have a headache the next day. I never get headaches otherwise. I joked with my sweety about looking up sex headaches but I didn't expect to find something so serious. I think I should see a doctor too. My blood pressure is low not high and I'm thin and in good health. Strange. Should I be more worried than some.

Posted by Heather on 04/04/2009 at 03:01:00 pm

I have had these headaches during orgasm before. It is always when I have a pinched nerve in my upper neck. I see the chiropractor to have it ajusted and the pain is gone.

Posted by Anonymous on 01/04/2009 at 09:48:00 am

sex makes my eyes go funny, seriously it makes me dizzy when I orgasm, why?

Posted by Anonymous on 24/03/2009 at 05:59:00 pm

I am an average weight but I do seem to suffer from high blood pressure. I just wonder if blood pressure medicine will help the sexual headaches.

Posted by TresHombres on 19/03/2009 at 04:18:00 pm

I've had this a number of times over the last 10 years, usually in clusters over a few weeks and always when climaxing in the doggy-style position (thankfully there are other great positions to climax in!). Headache disappears in minutes but still scary as hell. Never told the doctor. Haven't had this in over a year now. My girlfriend had a series of these a few months ago over the course of a month. (Missionary position with a little vibrator). None since. We have great sex and this has been an 'interruption' to an otherwise great experience. Her headaches were also gone within minutes.

Im in great physical shape and just started having the same thing happen to me about 5 months ago. I hope it goes away it happened to me again today and the pain was so intense i thought I was going to black out. Do you think I should seriously see a doctor.

Posted by DMH on 13/03/2009 at 05:07:00 pm

I have experienced this totally frightening headache at the back of my head on four occasions at the height of orgasm and like a number of other people have commented you do feel like your head is going to explode, the pressure build up is so very bad. My last experience was really bad and I had to stop making love to my husband, it made me cry it was that painful. I went to see my doctor the following day although I felt very embarrassed I told him everything and he explained all about it and has referred me for a brain scan which I should be going to in the next couple of weeks. He also gave me some tablets for thining the blood. Finding this site has really helped, not that you would wish it on your worst enemy, but knowing other people are experiencing the same thing really does help, that's why i decided to comment on this personal issue. Apparently it is more common than you think. Hopefully all will be well at my scan

when i masturbate i get a really bad headache at the back of my head it hurst for at-least 1/2 an hour and i do keep my neck muscles relaxed could it be because i get in there too fast.

This morning my wife and I ttryed to have sex and it happened again the pain is too much to bear! So I googled sex head ache for the first time. I've started getting these excrutiating headaches during sex about a year ago. They come and go but I've noticed a pattern where I seem to get them more often if I'm hungover. Could alcohol intensify a cluster headache? It's to the point where it's too painful to reach organisim and I feel like someone is sticking a needle into the back of my head. Are there any known medications to help prevent these? Thanks, Mitch

I am having a severe headache during orgasm, so bad that it makes my cry. I am a female. My headache is on the sides of my head and feels like it's going to explode. Usually after taking pills for my headache I start to feel better within a couple of hours. I am afraid to even think about sex, so that I won't get that pain.

I have started a new relationship and we have just begun to have intercourse, last night and the night before as I became more and more aroused a "splitting" headache took hold from nowhere, it was so bad I had to stop at once, I actually thought I was dying, Ive never felt pain like it in the front and around my eyes, intense throbbing which lasted for a couple of hours, I can still feel it slightly now, if it carries on I will be down the Doctors.

Posted by Anonymous on 12/02/2009 at 01:56:00 am

i've had these on and off since my teens. for a few days i'll get headaches that get worse the closer i get to orgasm. it feels the way i've heard migraines described, but i'm the only person in my family who DOESN'T get them, so i don't really know. Anyway, i'm just sharing to let other people know they are not alone. mine are only once or twice a year for a few days max. sometimes only one day.

I have had 4 of these attacks now in te space of a week my last one was last night lasting 8 hours until I fell asleep, there were still remnants of it this morning. The second one that I had ended with a ct scan and a lumber puncture and a stay in hospital overnight, luckily no brain bleed was found although my bp sored to 200/137 but the annoying thing is that no medication or pain relief has been offered, what can be done to ease this pain when it happens, it feels like I am going to die

Posted by Anonymous on 21/01/2009 at 09:19:00 pm

I experience a headache that is located in the back of my head, increases with sexual excitement, and culminates in an more severe (almost explosive headache) at orgasm. I am in reasonable shape, I still play footie once per week, I`m a little overweight (6'3" and 104kg - honestly)and I do not have high blood pressure. This just started happening to me last week and I have seen my GP and have been referred to a neuologist (privately). I do not feel particularly stressed, I do feel tension in my neck and I can feel the tension daily now - although I am aware I may just be "tuned into it". GP says it may be the ocular nerve??? any chance?? Thanks, Neil.

Posted by Paul on 17/01/2009 at 10:32:00 am

I have had a few of these headaches in the past but last night was the worst one yet, it was so bad that it made me vomit, after about 2 hours it subsided enough to allow me to sleep but I have awoke this morning with remnants of the headache still there and a I'm a bit wobbly when I walk. This only seems to happen when we have sex on the spur of the moment that is very intense. Thankyou for letting me share my experience, this has been of great help knowing that I'm not on my own.

I am so glad I found this forum. I have frequent headaches anyway. Masturbation is one of my favorite pastimes, and it sucks that it is now painful. I am all of the above, overweight, stressed out, frequent headache suffer, I am scared I am going to the doctor ASAP

Posted by Ropacz on 14/01/2009 at 06:49:00 am

Thanks for the information. I experience this headache during masturbation just this time and I am very afraid. It is so painful that I stopped masturbating. I never experience this one during sex.

Posted by Doc on 14/01/2009 at 05:37:00 am

I am a physician, and actually was pretty sure what they was happening physiologically, but I did not realize just how much the description perfectly matched my own pain! I do not normally complain, but I have to stop masturbating before orgasm because the pain gets so intense.

Posted by Anonymous on 13/01/2009 at 08:54:00 pm

I had the problem described. It was a throbbing pain in my head that heightened at orgasm. It was so painful I thought I was going to pass out. It then decreased in intensity but didn't go away despite pain meds. Is there anyone who has discovered a serious problem related to this symptom or is it something you can attribute to stress (I have been a little stressed lately)?

Posted by defe on 11/01/2009 at 05:44:00 am

damnn i'm glad i found this forum... I experienced this type of headache in 07 when my girlfriend and i took a trip to sweden... i had never had this before that time and it only happened abot 4 four times and have not felt it since,, but i did scare the shit out of me when i went through it.

Posted by Val on 08/01/2009 at 05:17:00 am

This is a good write up. I wish I'd found this a long time ago. I took 2 months for them to finally stop. Prescribed pain meds for after onset didnt work. Other meds taken before before sex/masturbation had limited affect depending on intensity of activity. Doctors tend to look at you strangely when you have to go into details about when they occur.

Posted by Max on 05/01/2009 at 11:21:00 am

I experienced a bout of these headaches during mastabation a few months back. They were the most painful headaches I have ever experienced. Without going in to the gory details too vividly I could feel the intense pulsating of the main artery at the back of my head. At orgasm the pain at the back of my head was so intense I thought I was going to pass out. I considered raising it with the doc but was a little embarrassed at the thought. It hasn't happened again since and put it down the stresses of work and life at that particular time. If it reoccurs I will be going to my GP.

Posted by david on 05/01/2009 at 04:56:00 am

OH SHIT!!! ive had two of these headaches the last time i had sex,one was last nite. it was scary and hurt so bad right behind my eyes. after reading these articles and some others, iam scared and going to the doc tomorrow.

Posted by FW on 04/01/2009 at 08:17:00 pm

I recently experienced my first headache of this type and must admit I was scared. I can only describle it as the most painful headache I have ever had which proceeded to last several hours. So scared that I looked it up on the net so was glad to find this article. Only hoping it doesn't re-occur.

I've just started getting these headaches in the last three weeks or so when I masturbate and have sex. It looks like a brain scan might be wise.

Very good write up, I got a alot from this. I have these pain and I am overweight and try to do sex in quick sucession that too very quick.

Posted by Ch on 27/12/2008 at 03:30:00 pm

I have recently started getting these headaches when i masturbate, and they are utterly excrutiating. They arrive within seconds and in my case last for maybe 3 or 4 hours. So far i have not been able to reduce the effect in any way, but they come and go randomly.
