Headache during sex

Headaches during sex sound like a joke, but they are not funny to anyone who experiences them. Mysteriously, the headache may occur on some occasions but not on others, even with the same sexual technique. Sexual intercourse, or just masturbation, may bring on the pain.

Who gets headaches during sex?

  • Sexual headaches can occur at all ages, but are most common in the early 20s and between 35–45 years of age (Neurology 2003;61:796–800).
  • Men are three times more likely than women to have sexual headaches.
  • Sexual headaches tend to occur during male, but not female, orgasm, and during female but not male masturbation.
  • Sexual headaches are also more common in people who already suffer from migraine or tension headache.

Why the headache occurs

Sex can cause various sorts of headache.
  • At the moment of orgasm there can be a sudden, severe pain. This is probably due to contraction of some of the small blood vessels in the brain, similar to migraine, and in fact half the people with this type of headache are also migraine sufferers. This pain generally lasts less than an hour, but may be gone in 10 minutes or linger for a few hours. It may be throbbing, dull or stabbing.
  • Less commonly, as sexual excitement increases, some people experience a dull, cramping, tight feeling at the back of the head. This is probably due to excessive contraction of the muscles of the neck.
  • If you suffer from migraine, you may find that sex triggers a migraine attack. This headache will be identical to your ‘usual’ migraine. It occurs after sex, but not during sex.

Some people have only one of these headaches, but many people have a combination, so they experience a headache that increases with sexual excitement, and culminates in an explosive headache at orgasm.

Often, the headaches occur in bouts lasting a few weeks, and then disappear for a while.
Other causes of headache during sex are pills for the treatment of erection problems, such as Viagra (sildenafil), Cialis (tadalafil) and Levitra (vardenafil). Headache is one of their side effects.

What you can do about it

  • If you have severe headache at orgasm, you must see your doctor to check that there is no serious reason for the headache. A brain scan is recommended as a precaution (Update 2006;73(2);10). Your doctor may then be able to prescribe a drug such as propranolol to prevent the headache.
  • If you mainly have the dull headache at the back of the neck, make a deliberate effort to relax your neck muscles. This usually relieves it.
  • Try intensifying your sexual excitement more gradually. This works in about 50% of men with sexual headache.
  • Most people find they are more prone to these headaches when they are tired or under stress, attempting intercourse for the second or third time in close succession, or when they are using an uncomfortable or strenuous position. Try to avoid these situations!
  • Sexual headaches are also more likely if you are in poor physical shape, overweight and with high blood pressure – so if you become fitter they may improve.

I get bad headaches after masturbation. I've read this could be a brain tumour and i'm too embarrassed to ask anyone, is this true?

Posted by Optional on 18/01/2012 at 01:28

If I read correctly, can clots cause a sudden headace during erection when having sex, and if it comes then go away this could be the result of many problems.

At my age of 61, it is not my problem to have a headache if there is sexual intercourse activity. I usually did it three times a week according to my doctor to avoid high blood presures, and it is best exercise daily to become young looking always!

i had a brain scan yesterday ond some fluid taken from my spine to rule out bleeding on the brain. i do have high blood pressure,so with any luck the bp tablets will help me through this pain. you need to go out walking or running to keep trim as i need to.

I seem to get this to, nervousness(General non sex related) And then sexual stimulation seems to onset these headaches very quickly it feels like my neck is throbbing or something it could be a pinched nerve but its like these headaches respond with heartrate, as it climbs so does the headache/s

Posted by Chiro4life on 28/11/2011 at 04:07

C1,C2 Vertabrate (The top bones in your neck) Connect your brain stem to your nervous system. Those bones also protect the nerves that control blood flow to your ENTIRE body. A mis-alignment/ subluxated vertebrate can pinch those nerves and reduce/inhibit your body's blood flow. During an orgasm your blood flow is concentrated to one area and if the brain can't communicate with the rest of your system properly can VERY easily get a headache. My suggestion; before you run to a M.D. Allow a Chiropractor to do an initial X-ray examination. Chiropractors are trained with 2-3xs many hours in radiology and can help diagnose a problem easily fixed with adjustments and not medication that may be embarrassing and leave you wondering why you 'don't work right'. I've felt that way before. Don't get frustrated.

Hey! I wrote a comment on here like 2-3 months ago I think. My headache is gone now!! :) Just take a break from sex/masturbation. I waited for about 1week only, which isn't much at all! I kept noticing that the pain was getting smaller and smaller, and now it doesn't hurt at all :) Just give sex/masturbation and orgasms overall for a couple of days. And just calm down a little bit. Instead of being pretty intense. Good luck!

if operation is recommended and carried out due to serious headache after sex. please what is the adverse effect? will drugs prescribed after operation have effect on the man causing him not having more kids?

Posted by Optional on 28/10/2011 at 04:21

I had a severe headache during sex and I ended up going to the doctor and he sent me for a MRI and MRA scan. Turns out I have an unruptured brain aneurysm. I ended up getting a coil embolization to fill it, and I am still recovering. Hopefully this doesn't happen to you, but don't ignore severe headaches. You could be catching an aneurysm before it ruptures.

I was getting these headaches on and off and was really worried, I couldn't understand why and how I was getting them. Me being a panic head thought the worse and thought it was something serious. My girlfriend told me it could be too much salt (high blood pressure) so I stopped and it seemed to help. BUT it happened again, I have come to learn that taking it slow and building it up as said on this website helps a lot, also for you marathon pro's take a cig break or read a book instead of jumping right back in it will help ahhaha. Thanks guys.

I started to feel this terrible, pulsating headache a week ago for the first time during masturbation. I thought my head will be ripped off my body. It lasted for like 15 minutes but I felt it like echo during all this time since it started. Today I bought a "wired head massager", google it for images. I used it for massaging my head and then I decided to masturbate while I had this massager on my head. And, o magic, although the headache tried to come back but within a second it was subdued and there was any aftermath pain in the head. I suspect that the headache was triggered by the electrical impulses in the brain during the intense activity and the metallic wire neutralized them. Try this remedy folks, I hope it helps you like it helped me.

I'm having this headache "every" time during masturbation. I'm only 16years old, so I find it very embarissing to talk to a doctor and my parents about it. I've been masturbating since I was 14, but have never experienced headache as I do now. Any help? please! Is there any way to stop this headache from coming? without talking to anyone, just fix it by myself? :(

Posted by Optional on 27/09/2011 at 12:42

I took Chianix and engaged in sexual activity. Just like the folks below I had a massive pain in the brainstem area that was crippling. Must be something to do with the pituitary gland and the "pleasure center".

I always have headache each time I took viagra. Pls what can I do?

Posted by Liplover on 06/09/2011 at 08:06

I'm having the same problem as Kevin. The pain is happening in my brain stem area. So painfull, all I can do is roll over, (off of my wife), and hold my head while the pain is pulsating to my heart beat. I think it must be tied to my blood pressure. Since blood pressure is at it's highest during orgasm. And that's when the pain is at it's worse. And it only takes place during the big "O" and slowly subsides on it's own afterwords. Anybody got any ideas. I've got a dr.'s visit coming up. But it's going to be a couple days before I can see him, (my regular dr.), and I'm sure I'll have to be referred to someone else. So, I'm a while before knowing for sure what's causing this. Any ideas?

Posted by kevin on 22/08/2011 at 06:05

I have gotten these headaches at the point of orgasm that was so painfull that I literally curled up in a ball grasping my head, with a hard throbbing pain. This pain was severe for about 30-45 seconds then subsided on its own. This has only happened three or four times over the years, but was wondering what actually causes this.

good morning my wife and i were having relations and all of the sudden i got a headache. this had never happened before, also i used to get horny a lot and now i dont. is there something wrong with me??

Posted by Optional on 08/07/2011 at 05:18

Sex is a healthy function and should be enjoyed as such within the divine law of course. The presence of a headache is either high blood pressure, too much sugar in the body or something that the person is doing wrong, even including the act itself. So there are lots of possible reasons for this. My experience has been that it does not matter what age, what matters is your health. A checkup should be advised and blood sugar levels monitored. Exercise and good eating should also be prime. Remember, there are too many companies looking to make millions by selling drugs to people just to solve health problems temporarily. So stay away from Viagra and get healthy the right way.

Hi there. I'm a girl and usually masturbating after reading some hentai or yaoi manga since 2 years. Even so,i only doing this once or twice a week. But i started to feel a sharp and very throbbing headache since 5 days ago, and this made me really confused about what happened. I never had migraine and my blood pressure always normal. I wonder if anyone here can help me to find the cause? Thanks before

Hi there I have just had oral sex with my partner and after wards I got pain in my neck and head. I went to the docs a few months ago about headaches and head said I suffer from tension headaches. Could this be the pain I am getting now? Thanks mat

The past four days I have had one of these head aches. My first was just before orgasm in sex. The second day was masturbation. The third was sex again. And again today with masturbation. They all occur right before orgasm but last much longer. The past four days. Does this mean anything? Should I stop with the sexual things and wait a week. Or should I continue and try to over come it?

After orgasm by masturbation an intense headache occurs at the front of my head which lasts for about ten minutes. It is very disturbing and is preventing me from having sexual satisfaction

Posted by anonymousboy on 20/06/2011 at 10:59

i am masturbating since 2years but this is happening since two days. Whenever i start to madturbate a strange pain starts at the left side of my head.. A throbbing pain. I would also like to add that i am sleeping and eating less these days. It maybe the reason also. I am very sad.

Posted by Dan on 12/06/2011 at 02:10

These intense headaches have been happening to me for over 30 years. Have had MRI,CT,etc could find no problems. Most times they go away in a few minutes after orgasm, then usually there is a lingering light pain that lasts for a few days, to a month or longer. fortunately these bouts only happen about once a year or sometimes every few years. They seem to happen more often, and have longer side effects if I am under a lot of stress. Also for me, MSG, Sodium Nitrate, and Sodium Nitrite can trigger this type of headache even without having an orgasm. The trick to avoiding getting one of these is to take it slow, build up to orgasm gradually, and stay in as comfortable of position as possible. I also take Cialis on occasion, but have never had a headache while on it. Also this has been going on long before any E.D. drugs were available. Physical therapy, with neck exercise seems to help. Also avoid caffeine, food preservatives, and anything that irritates your nervous system.

Literally thought my head was going to explode! I am 45 and this has NEVER happened before. Very strange.

Posted by Optional on 05/06/2011 at 01:44

i have suffered with this problem and found stress hi blood pressure to be most of the problem you should go to the docs to get checked over also you need to try to find the trigger that causes the headaches during sex if you watch porno before or your gf dresses up in sexy outfits you need to go slowly and build up to climax instead of 1 big rush of exceitment as this raises blood pressure

hey everyone. I am 20 years old. I am 192cm tall and 87 kgs. I have a very fit body. I am a smoker( cigarettes ). here is my story. 6 days after I had sex with my girlfriend, I went to see her again and we had sex( I masturbated one time a day in last 2 days before sex ). while we were having sex after 15-20 minutes I started having an extremely sharp and instant headache I slowed down a little bit but continued thinking it will go away. after 10 minutes more pain became unbearable and I lied to my girlfriend and said that I came. she didnt buy it and asked me what was wrong and I said I have had an headache since I woke up. She asked me if I needed a cigarette( I havent been smoking cigarettes for 4 days because I had a soar throat and a flu, and I still had the flu during the time I spent with my girlfriend ) She told me that this head ache was because of I didnt have any cigarettes. we went outside, I had 2 cigarettes and my headache was gone almost in a minute. than we went inside and continued having sex. This time I didnt have any headache until I actually came in about 15 minutes. and this was worse than the previous one so I went outside and had another cigarette and it was gone again fast. than we swam and slept. when we woke up we had sex again and I had a headache again. and this time cigarette didnt work because I was hungover too( I havent been drinking for 2 weeks until that night ) than I came home my head ache was gone. after 2 days I masturbated and after I came I had a ligther head ache than the others but it lasted for almost 24 hours and I could sleep barely 4 hours( I usually sleep 6 hours ). and today I masturbated again and just when I was at climax I had this sharp head ache again and decided to search for it online and here I am. while I am writing this my head ache is already gone. I used to smoke a pack a day but now I am smoking a pack a week and it was an instant change. do you think it is because smoking or should I go see my doctor? thank you everyone, I hope everyone gets rid of that ridicuolus pain that we men dont deserve.

I am a 39yr old male and have been physically fit my entire life. Recently, I have experienced this incredibly (excruciating) pulsating headache myself, several times out of nowhere. Within 1-2 seconds it went from minimum to maximum intensity starting from the base of the skull working it's way to the frontal lobes (both sides). There is also a severe pain behind the eyes internally and to the touch. The first time this happened was during masturbation. It was moderate pain. The second was in the gym when I pressed that last extra rep to exertion. Had to take a breather, but, again that was mild. Third, one morning I jumped in the shower with the wife and went to town. The pain built up quickly 1-2secs (hits like a train). I tried to tolerate it and go for the finish line, but, the pain was so intense it felt like my brain was going to explode and I was going to pass out. At first, I thought it was lack of oxygen from the steam. I had to stop which is unusual...ok never. But this pain was so unreal I thought I was going to have an aneurysm right then and there. I was scared! I immediately got out and laid down in bed (which made it worse). I noticed it was a little better sitting up with my legs stretched out in front of me. This headache lasted days. The first few hours were intense throbbing headaches as if I was getting hit lightly with a hammer to the head. I had interrupted sleep during the day. The rest of the 72 hours or so was random, less intense throbbing. The fourth time it happened (today) I took notes. It had nothing to do with over exertion since I am fit and made it a point not to get over-worked. Deep or relaxed breathing helped a little, enough to bust a ... but still no cure. What was significant was when I tensed up, it seemed to happen right away. Also, my pulse was directly related to my headaches. Once the activity stopped. The headaches subsided within seconds. I researched plenty and have a hunch that it happens every time I have back/neck pains caused by either sleeping wrong, long computer sessions at work and/or physical activity with back/neck stress. Another thing is, it occurs sporadically. I read all previous posts (thanks everyone!) that it may be due to pinched nerves. Similar to your leg falling asleep and getting too little or too much amount of blood flow. Or, similar to doggy style head down increased blood flow?? lol, who knows. Either way, I am Going to see a chiropractor along with the Doc. It makes sense that the pain increased when I laid down and the reason they subscribe aspirin or ibuprofen to constrict the blood vessels. Since your arteries and blood vessels expand and your neck and head muscles expand and contract to prepare for the big "O" I might try the quality green tea also. One thing for sure is I have responsibilities a wife and kids to take care of and I love sex. I don't want to go out like this. Hope this helps others.

Until a few days ago, I hadn't had sex with a partner for over four years. Needless to say, I was excited beyond words to have this recent opportunity. About 10 minutes into the foreplay, I was struck by excruciating pain in my head. I had to ask my partner to stop what he was doing. We tried changing positions which helped a little bit but not enough. I found that keeping my head upright helped some though it did not eliminate the pain. Just had a similar experience while alone. I have been under a LOT of stress lately, and my body is all knotted up. Thanks to the person who made the comment about the chiropractor. I started seeing one recently. I think I'll go see him again SOON. The pain is so bad that it frightens me. Like others have said, I fear that I'm going to have a stroke. It honestly feels like my head is going to explode. Ugh. (and OUCH)

This has started occuring for me in the last week. It comes on as I near climax, then subsiding afterwards, but with a dull ache lasting for 30 mins to an hour. I do suffer from Migrains occasionally as well. I'm going to try abstaining for a while and get back into my exercise routine which I've let slip. I understand this may help.

About two weeks ago i had these headaches two days in a row. 1st time was down the Gym, next time was the folowing day after masturbation. Ended up calling an ambulance and going to A&E. Had CT scan and Lumber puncture and all was clear. But every time i have sex, masturbate or lift heavey stuff at the Gym i get the same pain, like someone is smashing a brick into the back of my head. Been back to the docs and all she has said is its a migrain and prescribed me Imogen? Desperatly want advice as i cant go on for the rest of my life not having sex, masterbating or excercising. Help!!!

Posted by Optionalxiii on 23/03/2011 at 03:07

Same story headache at point of orgasm, intense for about 20 minutes and can linger for up to over a day etc its proper crappy. (just my theory) i abstained for a week and the pain got better but was still there, i'm hoping a 2 week / as long as i can physically go will do the trick. the fact that breathing helps some people makes me think that this is the case as breathing lots lowers your Co2 level, causing blood vessel in your brain to constrict limiting the flow of blood this would imply that its really is the blood pressure causing the pain as less pressure is equaling less pain, so something is damaged and needs to heal, and like a scab if you keep picking it it'll never heal, normal bruising on me take about 2-3 weeks to heal so we'll see, i hope this works. also not drinking caffine or doing any hard physical activity, gunna be really heavy but if it works will post back x

Hi my wife has been suffering this for some time i asked her to talk to her doctor because i was worried about her which she did not do,so last week she went to see her doctor about her hands so i asked if i could go with her to ask about her headache when she orgasmed. which she agreed to. i asked her doctor about this and the doctor said she would need to to an internal exam of her i would like to know why as every article ive read the doctors want to do MRI or CT could and i never read any where else that this has been done

I suffered a severe explosive headache just before the point of orgasm. It has happened before, but this last one is by far the worse ever. The back of my neck hurts now and my head has a dull ache all over. NHS direct have said to have it checked out by my GP and have a Scan to rule out anything sinister like a bleed on the brain. An eye test was also recommended. Heres hopeing results come back clear, and we can find a solution to this.

I havent been sexually active for many years and decide to get back to life again after startign a local hormonal treatment. The sex drive came back strong as before and I start even masturbate myself. However, out of nowhere, when close to the climax a grueling headache knocked me down! I thought it was perhaps my age, or the treatment, or even worse, a stroke on the making. I am so relieved to read here that younger people also had it. Tomorrow will be my big day, having a real sexual relation hoping that this dull headache does not spoil everything. Otherwise I may need to visit a doctor. Thanks all!

If you are suffering from these headaches I have a suggestion. I got these explosive headaches for the first time about 5 days ago, and they are ridiculously painful. Same story as everyone else: went to the doctor, had the tests, no real feedback or suggestions. By "experimenting" I found one way around the issue that seems to work: as you approach climax concentrate on taking deep, full, rhythmic breaths just like you would if the doctor was checking your lung function. I've only tried this once, but it really limited my problem.

I had this problen for about 6 months in my late twenties. The headache was severe and would last a few hours after sex. Then it just went away as quickly as it started. I really never knew the cause or reason. I will say that the human body is very complex and there seems to be no end to various ailments that seem to have no explanation as to why they occur.

Posted by Optional on 25/01/2011 at 02:22

Hi all, just back from the hospital after one of these. Have had slight ones when I was younger but this was by far the worst pain I have ever felt. I thought I was going to die and I can usually handle pain quite well. After a CT scan and lp everything came back clear. Doctor said that nothing can be done which is worrying. I never want to experience that again! It was at the exact point f climax with no warning. I was reduced to tears which obviously made my Partner scared. Hopefully this never happens again

Haven't been sexually active for over a year but have a new boyfriend and yesterday we spent a lot of time with him fingering me, etc. He had me just about there for about a half hour which is unusual for me, I usually come right away. By the time we finally got in bed and got down to business right as I was about to come I had the sudden pain in my neck. I NEVER get headaches, this felt like I'd strained my neck. I thought I'd shoved my head up against the head of the bed and hurt my neck or something. The pain wasn't too severe but I had to tell him to stop. Then that night masturbating it happened again and again I had to stop. This morning masturbating I was able to climax by deep breathing which seemed to help. I still feel kind of a dull headache and mild nausea. So glad to read I am not the only one and it's not a stroke! Also I've been doing neck exercises lately trying to firm up my chin and throat area so am thinking this may be part of it. Hope it goes away soon, not a good way to start a new relationship!!!

I get this feeling of being drugged after having sex. For at least 2-3 days. So I try to save masturbation until Friday night each week. I feel like I am drugged and can't quite control all my senses for the following 2-3 days. It is as if I am confused, cant focus and wake up feeling drowsy and lasts the whole day even after sleeping 6-9 hours. I don't feel quite myself after masturbating. Too bad for the recurring horny feelings otherwise I would've liked to stop masturbating all together. I've not read about other people having similar problems so I suppose its something psychological wrong with me?

During and after orgasm I experience a sharp burning pain in a nerve in the back of my neck behind the ear. The burning pain lasts for between 5 and 10 minutes; sometimes the pain lingers in the form of a dull ache around the left side of my neck, face, left shoulder and arm. What causes this?

I was having sex with my long term boyfriend yesterday, and at climaxing, i experience an excruitiating pain in the right side of my head. This lasted for 10-15 mins. The night before this, i was clubbing at a 16+ and in the middle of dancing, i experienced the same pain and this is how i recognised the pain when i was climaxing. Originally i thought it was down to drinking alot of redbull. Obviously not. I am not a regullar migraine sufferer, however, having just had sex with my bf again for the 2nd time, the same thing accerd but worse and spread much more over the brain. Only the right and back are effected, im embarrased to go to the doctors but will if is totally neccessary, any advise??? x

Had same issue: right near orgasm, left base of back of neck started throbbing, and sending pain throbbing around back of neck up my head to my ear, and near the top of my skull but ONLY on my left side of my head (if looking at me from behind). I had similar tension headaches in the past and 2-3 treatments from my Chiropractor. There was a MISALIGNMENT of my spine between my shoulders to base of neck. It was a very DEEP adjustment. It took about 2-3 days for the muscles there to release and get me back to normal. This has happened now for the 2nd time... but not for a couple of years... (but recently in Dec 2010). I visited my chiropractor and he did many adjustments up near c2-c5 near the base of the neck and it made a big difference. I tried having sex today on Wednesday after being adjusted on Monday morning and the intensity of the pain was 1/2 of what it was on Sunday past. So I need another adjustment to make it "take" as the muscles have a "memory" and want to PULL the bones back into their incorrect position(s). My neck I think was whacked by one of my kids while I was looking to the right with a boxing glove, top down and I heard a crunch... that was about a month ago. Find a GOOD chiropractor to do the adjustments. NO MEDICINES... that just MASKS the problem :)

I quit smoking 7 days ago and three days in I was attempting to handle things myself and as I was getting to the happy point base of my neck felt like I had been hit with a brick (not a turn on)! I was terrified as the headache slowly made its way to the front of my head and into my eyes. The pain made it impossible to continue. I was terrified I was having a stroke, I ran and took two Ibupro and two aspirin just in case. Anyway, the next day the same thing happened minus the initial blast to the back of the head. Now, for the third day in a row. This time it was different though. I was having intercourse with my wife and upon her getting to that happy place, I decided it was my turn. I was just about there and had to stop....this is getting ridiculous. I was wondering if anyone knows if this could be caused by the Chantix that I am using as an aid in stopping smoking or if this could possibly be from quitting smoking all together. Any help or input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank god for this site. It all started a week ago I was having sex with my BF and was about to orgasm and BANG throbbing sharp pain on the left hand side of my head and on my base, I thought I going tp faint it was that bad. I had already had 3 orgasms that day and I do get tension headaches. A few days after this I was having sex with my BF again and i felt throbbing in my head but nothing as bad as this, then a few days after whilst masterbatng it happened again, as soon as I reached orgasm the pain on the left hand side and left lobe and neck was so bad. When will it stop?? I love sex and I dont want to be afraid of it.

I've had occasional migraines since I was 9, but never from anything sexual of strenuous. I'm much less concerned now. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!

i experienced the worst headache in my life almost 2 weeks ago. i usually have sex with the female on top and once in awhile ill get on top of her. i started dating an ex-girlfriend from years ago again 3 months ago. we have sex 4 or more times a week n usually 2 times back to back. i had not done it doggy style in over 6 months and i dont even remember the time i did it that way before then, after a minute i started getting a pain on the left side of my neck and it went up to behind my left eye. it felt as though i was struck with a bat and i felt like passing out. i hurriedly finished and told her i thought i was going to faint and i had a terrible pain behind my left eye and left side of head and neck. i had it for about 10 minutes and then it turned to a dull throbbing ache. i asked a pharmacist and she said it was probably a migraine. the dull ache on the left side lasted maybe 2 hours. we have done it 3 more times doggy style and ive gotten the same headach during and afterwards. i went to see my dr and he scheduled me for a ct this monday. i told him its only happened when we do it that way but he never mentioned anything about sex headaches. he just wants me to get checked for blockage or an aneurysm. i have been really terrified until i came across this site. thank you and God Bless all of us that suffer from this. my girlfriend doesnt want to do anything anymore cause she doesnt want to be the reason i have a stroke or die

Hi all, Reading these comments is pretty reassuring as I was beginning to get very worried. Recently as in last week I have been getting excuriating pain down the left side of my head, sharp pain that comes on during masturbation or sex so extreme I cant move, I also start to feel nausea. The pain lasts for roughly an hour after before going to a slight headache for the next 24 hours or so. I then masturbated and it come back as painful and excuriating as before. I am very active and play Football, Run, Weights etc and have never experienced this pain during these activitys only sex and masturbation. The only other time this as happened was around 7 years ago and this again was during sex. Its now getting to the point where I try to fob sex off because of the pain I cannot concentrate. Sitting here now 24 hours after last masturbation I have tingling pains down 1 side, my head just doesnt feel right but this will prob go by morning if I do not masturbate or have sex....Please advise:-(

remedy during the initial onset of these headaches: as soon as you start to feel the pain in your neck, take both hands and grab the back of your head and pull your head down, trying to touch your chin to your chest. this stretches the back of the neck and keeps it from cramping too far.

Posted by theDUDE on 16/10/2010 at 02:56

i've had these as well. contractions from the trapezius muscle in the back of the neck causes pressure on the lesser occipital nerve. it starts out feeling much like a charlie horse in your calf, excruciating pain, quivering, then tightening of the surrounding muscles and a lingering dull pain that can last up to 24 hours after the attack. like anything, it takes time to heal. abstinence for two weeks should do it.

much like fight club- relating to other peoples personal issues is really helpful! I have got these headaches from masturbating- usually whilst standing up- once or twice in my early twenties. Had a very stressful death in the family recently and out of nowhere got a viscous headache mid sex. I somehow soldiered through it and thought nothing of it when the headache dimmed to maybe just 10% and was gone the next morning. Happened again last night though and 9 hours later as i type this its easily 70-80% as bad as it was last night. I took even stronger pain killers now, have tried massaging my neck, hyper ventilating and ice all over the place but im about an hour away from going to A&E- even for a sedative to help me get some sleep. worst pain ive ever endured- without doubt.

Two days ago I was reaching climax and the back of my head/neck started to throb uncontrollably and it scared me pretty bad. Each time I've either masturbated or had sex since then I get the same pain. I'm afraid to attempt this again because it seems persistent. I don't have medical insurance so a doctor, hospital, or neurologist visit is out of the question. I'm not sure what to do. I've been reading about it online today and it's worrying me. Am I going to die if I don't go to the doctor??

Ive never had any sex related problems before then last week I decided to try for my third orgasm of the morning and this intense headache hit me. I thought I had broken something in my brain. Bad pain for 5 minutes than lingering dull pain for hours. It is now happening every time I start to cum, but doesnt happen any other time. Stopping sex doesnt help once it hits it hits. Had a CT scan and came back normal. I am going to try and give up orgasms for a while and see if that helps (ill sure miss them).

Posted by Mik on 23/09/2010 at 03:24

I have had them off and on since I was about 30 I'm now 44 male. They come and go. Massage helps as well as a kind and loving partner. My Doctor referred to them as coital migrains and prescribed Soma aka Carisoprodol(kar eye soe proe' dole) a muscle relaxer. I have discussed it with many people because when it first happened to me I thought I'd had a stroke. Turns out my Mom and brothers also have suffered with it also. I had a CAT scan performed to be safe also. Here's the Wiki Link for the info below http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coital_cephalalgia Coital Cephalalgia Presentation; The pain usually moves from the base of the skull through the head towards the frontal lobes. Extremely severe and sharp pain behind the eyes is also a symptom. The headaches usually have an immediate onset, with some gradually worsening during intercourse and others (referred to as "explosive headaches") occurring almost instantaneously at the moment of orgasm. These headaches typically last for a few minutes to a few hours, although it is possible for such headaches to last up to a few days. Coital cephalalgia can frequently occur in a timeframe that exertion headaches occur. Epidemiology; It is most common for men to experience these headaches for the first time in their early 20s, or between the ages of 35-44; the reason for this is unclear. More prevalent in men, by a ratio of 3:1, these headaches appear in roughly 1% of the population, though it has been suggested that the prevalence may be higher, due to the embarrassment of presenting with the disorder, especially in cases where spontaneous remission occurs after a few days. Up to 10% of patients taking medication for erectile dysfunction may experience these headaches. It is important to see a doctor if you have such symptoms in order to rule out a potential brain aneurysm, or tumors. In most cases, these headaches are benign. More serious symptoms include a stiff neck, confusion, and dizziness. Treatment; As for treatment, a doctor may recommend abstaining from sexual activities and masturbation for a short period of time ranging from a few days to a few weeks. In addition, doctors may recommend medications such as propranolol that can be taken in advance of sexual activity to prevent such headaches. Reduction in weight to a more ideal level and increased exercise may also reduce the likelihood of recurrences. Indomethacin has also been tried.[2] Rapid deep breathing ( overbreathing to the point of becoming dizzy ) has been found to relieve the pain within a minute or two.

I have had that kind of problem without using viagras at all. It was like the head was going to explose. But ten minutes after it was finished. I mesure my pression after 2 minutes of the orgasm, it was 95.62.60 for the first time and after a minute it was 147.96.57

Posted by What a pain! on 15/09/2010 at 07:09

I experienced this kind of a headache twice in one week, first time in my whole life. It happened during masturbation. The first one lasted 6 hours. I never knew when I dosed off into sleep. It is so painful and disgusting. I thought the nerves in my head would blast. The nerves seem to bulge and expand, and the pain increased with each throb. I feel I also have migraine problems as once in 6 months, I experience tremendous pain on any one side of my head (usually left side). I never consulted a doctor as that happens not so frequently. Now this headache during masturbation is so painful and different from those migraine attacks. I never experienced it during sex and I have to check it out as it just started this week. Can anyone add on this?

This is the second time I have had a sudden excrutiating headache as I am manually stimulated by my husband to orgasm. Last time I just sucked it up and hoped I didn't die but this time I had to have him stop because the pain was so severe. I seriously thought I was having a stroke or an anuerysm. It went away after about 20 or so minutes and I took an Excedrine migraine (only thing I had around with aspirin in it)I don't even know how to approach a doctor with this or what type of doctor!

Posted by Optional on 12/08/2010 at 05:17

I'm fairly sure this is something to do with the neck. Never happened to me before, never had headaches or migraines. Went to a gig the other night, lots of moshing and jumping and really stiff painful neck now. Absolutely unbearable pain when masturbating, head feels like it is about to explode and takes about an hour to go away. Got nowhere near orgasm. Will have to leave it for a week or so and see what happens.

Posted by Optional on 08/08/2010 at 10:05

The pain I experience starts on the left side of my neck then moves up right past my ear. It's pretty intense at first, then about a minute later it's a dull throbbing pain that lasts for about an hour. It only happens during masturbation before orgasm. I'm a diabetic with normal blood pressure. Although I'm relieved to see I'm not the only one with this condition, I'm curious of it's cause.

im worried about my partner, hes been getting these headaches on and off now for about 2weeks. To the point where hes unable to stay sexually aroused. hes symptons most relate to the "dull ache on the back of neck" which as he gets more excited the pain increases. I dont think the advice in regards to "just relax your neck muscles" is a valid response to this dilemna. There must be something medically that we can do right? i hate seeing him suffer like this

Wow, I thought I was the only one to experience this problem. The first time is happened it came on after laying sod. The next after bending over to pick something up. Two day ago I was having intercourse and right before ejaculating I had a real head banger. I thought my head was going to explode. After this happened I really felt depressed thinking this is how its going to be. Saw a doctor today who said I had all the classic symptom of migraines. He is sending me for an MRI and MRA also blood test for Lymes. After reading all the post here I am not so depressed. Sounds temporal. I'm going to try the green tea thing as well. Thanks for sharing everyone.

ive been dealing with this for a week or so now. mine last for 2 days i got meds from the doc and they didnt help. ive recently been using AC all the time cause of this heat and that can be a cause of migraines so im going to stop using it after this one passes and ill let you know how it goes.

I get really bad headaches, they start fine at the start of masturbation and towards the pointf Ograsm/Cuming they are really bad. They last for 20 minutes after orgasm and then fade away. They are like a throbbing pain and the throbbing matches my heart beat.

I just started gettin these headaches and man do they suck...I get the stabbing pain at the left side of the back of the head and it spreads all over...i experienced one last night(17th june) and the second one tonight...both lasted for aboot 10 mins and after the stabbing subsided,i got the throbbing at the temples on both sides of my head...gonna consult my doc on monday and see about gettin a beta blocker(propanolol) which prevents the widenin of blood vessels on the surface of the brain(wide blood vessels on the surface of the brain is ur average migraine)...there is no history of brain problems in my family so am hopin it is only down to stress or high blood pressure...had a passing notion that ma g/f was usin voodoo but she says she isn't,lol...is she lying??? lol =)

I've been getting headaches off and on for a while. It happens as my excitement builds as I masturbate, but has only happened once during actual intercourse. Once it has started, it takes a while to subside and I notice that it throbs. The pain is located near the base of the skull to the right side of my spine. I have not noticed this pain during other exertion. My father died of a burst aneurysm in his brainstem. (in his 70's) Should I be concerned about the throbbing?

For me, this headache seems to be affected by my environment. In one country, I'll constantly get a headache should I try masturbating. In the other, it never happens. It is the oddest, and one of the most painful things, I've ever experienced.

I usually masterbate twice a day the pain hits the back of my head in the second one and its unbearable

I have been suffering from tension head aches for the last couple of months, and the last 3 times i have had sex just as im about to climax a get a servere pain moving up my neck into my head, face and eyes. The pain is so intense it brings me to tears. It normally lasts for a few hours but the pain gets less intense. What could be causing this?

so if i try abstinance. It may work and prevent further headaches! ill try that! lol . If it still accures i might see a doctor. thx for the info

Hi I am an eighteen year-old girl and have been very scared ever since I got a headache two nights ago after masturbating (it was standing up, I do not know if that makes a difference or not) that will not go away. I am healthy and fit but I do have a pain condition called fibromyalgia. However, I've masturbated before and never had this problem. I've read that it actually more common among women than men to have pain after masturbating. Is this really true? And how long does the pain last? Signed, Scared and confused

Posted by Confused on 20/05/2010 at 09:40

I am a little scared to say the least. I did not know this existed. My partner and I for the last 4 years have averaged sex once a day since meeting and never was there a problem, I masturbate maybe 3 times a week, only for the last year or so, and no problems. All of a sudden 3 days ago, I was masturbateing in the morning after little or no sleep the night before as I now wear nicotine patches to quit cigarettes, which I quit 3 days ago and as I reached climax, I got a sudden stabbing pain in my right temple. When we had sex last night, the exact same thing happened for both orgasms. This has happened so suddenly and it scares me to think it may be something mor serious. I masturbated this morning, mainly to see if it was still there and it is. I dont want to be scared of sex, my man and I love it too much, I guess it is off to the doctors to check.

Im 39. i was masterbating one night and got serious pain in the back of my head. Same thing happens with sex when i come. The pain last about ten minutes. I dont suffer from migrains or serious headaches.

HEY EVERYONE, I HAD THE SEX HEADACHE SINCE GOING THRU PUVERTY AND HAD STARTED TO MASTURBATE ON AN ON-GOING BASIS. THE FIRST TIME IT ACTUALLY TOOK ME STRAIGHT TO THE HOSPITAL SINCE IT WAS SO BAD THAT IT MADE ME VOMIT. THE PAIN STARTS JUST ABOUT WHEN YOU ARE ABOUT TO CUM. THE PAIN STARTS IN THE BACK OF THE NECK(RIGHT SIDE) MOVING TOWARDS THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE HEAD AND FEELING PRESSURE BEHIND THE EYE. AS YOU CUM YOU FEEL THE PALPITATIONS OF THE ORGASM IN YOUR BRAIN AS OPPOSE TO THE PENIS. I HAVE MASTURBATED SO MANY TIMES AND HAD SEX RIGHT THRU THE HEADACHES TO UNDERSTAND IT BETTER. THE ONLY WAY TO GET RID OF IT IS IF YOUR NECK IS STRAIGHT ALIGNED WITH YOUR BACK AND HEAD AND YOU BREATH DEEP SO THE BLOOD IS NOT RUSHING TOO FAST INTO YOUR BRAIN. IT WORKS AND YOU WILL NOT HAVE THIS HEADACHES EVER AGAIN IF YOU DONT ALLOW TO MUCH BLOOD PRESSURE TO BUILD IN THE BRAIN. THIS ONLY HAPPENS WHEN TOO MUCH TENSION IS BUILD ON THE NECK AND POOR BREATHING!!!

This happened to me very recently with my girlfriend. When I was 19 I had a bout of migraine headaches due to stress in my life, and I had to take medication for it. I have never had a migraine since. Since that time I have had little to no headaches (serious or otherwise). When I started my current relationship I began to have regular intercourse again, sometimes more than once in a day. The first few times I did not get a headache. After that, they happened almost every time during sex. It would start before orgasm, but really manifest itself during ejaculation. Sometimes if we had sex before we went to sleep, I would wake up and still have a headache. Most of the time, however, it only lasts for an hour or so. I can also say, as a former migraine sufferer, that these sex headaches are mild in comparison. I had never heard of sex headaches before, but normally I abstain from it unless I am in a serious relationship. I'm glad to know that it's more than likely not serious.

Ok I guess this is more common than I thought. So I got the sex headache too. Heres my deal. Im a 24 year old male, Im inshape, run and workout. Im trying to figure this thing out. I did a 5mile run on tuesday then I did weights on Wednesday and while being jacked off on thursday had the most painfull headache ever. Pain radiates from where spine joins head all the way to front of head. My headache has not stoped. Im going on five days of my pain. The pain has gotten better, but is still not gone. I feel there must be some link between my neck and this problem. My neck always sorta bothers me, still when I wake up that sort of thing. I had done some strenuous abb workout the day before onset. I wonder if the tension caused in my neck is some how making this happen. The other thing is, I had been ummmm using my equipment alot the days before the headache. Probably ejaculating 2-3 times a day the previous days and I was on my second time for that day when the headache developed. Still trying to figure this out, its horrible. What im also intrigued by is that morning wood doesnt have the same affect on my head, the top head, lol, as a sexually aroused wood.

During sexual arousal or orgasm I experience several severe, painful and distressing symptoms which have caused me to mostly avoid sex or fake it. They are a severe migraine headache which lasts up to 20 minutes or so, rapid palpitating heart and abdominal spasms which combine to make me feel I'm at deaths door! These symptoms have persisted for years. Every doctor I have asked say they have no clue and have never heard of these symptoms. I have taken Propranolol for years because I have palpitations but no diagnosed heart disease. I have read that Propranolol for migraine headaches associated with orgasm has been prescribed but obviously it doesn't work for me. Otherwise, I am in excellent health. Does anyone else have such symptoms or even heard of them? Any insight, suggestions? I've searched the internet and haven't found anything like what I experience.

I've suffered from migraine for years but had the first one of these sex headaches recently, happened at the point of orgasm and was so sudden and intense it was awful! One of the worse pains I've ever felt and I've given birth with no pain relief! Hopefully it won't happen again as it's a bit of a turn off wondering if you're going to be left with a blinding migraine complete with the nausea and vomiting that goes with it whenever you have sex!

I am a 36 year old male, and 2 weeks ago...i had severe headache occur at the back of my head during orgasm while masturbating. I was also holding my breath, and sort of hunched over. This was the first time this has happened. The intensity was that of a brain freeze, lasting only 10 seconds or so...starting at the point of ejaculation/orgasm and increasing with intensity to the point of excruciating pain and then subsiding (like a brain freeze). it was located from ear to ear and from the base of the neck. After the initial 10 second pain...i felt ok...no nausea, no dizziness, no sweating, tingling, no blurred vision etcetra...However, the next morning after getting up, i experienced a headache in that same region...just not as intense...advil did the trick. The headaches have lasted 2 weeks...they started to get better but are still there, and are not just in the back of the head...some pressure is experienced in the temples, as well as areas in the back of the head. Has anyone experienced the same exact situation? What are the chances that this is a sentinel leak (Aneurysm)?

Masturbation makes you feel headache. Masturbate also makes your brain become dull. I suggest you to drink 2 cups of green tea after masturbate. Green tea will remove the headache. The headache cause by masturbation is different from the usual headache that you got when you have fever. After masturbate, the headache felt inside the skull. I found that green tea to cure the headache by coincidence. I have suffered from masturbation headache more than a decade. Here is my story how I meet the green tea. One day I went to other country as a tourist and stayed in a 5 stars hotel. It was the first time I stayed in a 5 stars hotel. In the hotel I found green tea. I am not familiar with its taste. After going home from holiday I bought the same green tea. I masturbate as usual many times in a week and I drank the tea. After drinking I found that my headache diminished with one cup and vanish after the second cup. I was a bit surprised. First I thought it was coincidence but every time I drink the green tea after masturbate I found that my headache diminished or prevented before it obviously felt. Here I give you the link about the green tea that I usually drink. It is Japanese OSK green tea. I recommend you to drink high quality Japanese green tea like this one because I am not sure about other low grade green tea. I masturbate thousands times from my childhood and I have suffered from headache more than 10 year before I found green tea. Thank to god who makes me meet the green tea by coincidence. Believe my story. Try the green tea if you feel headache, tiredness, dreamless sleep, dehydration-like fatigue (actually it is not dehydration but you might feel like dehydrated after masturbate for a long period of time e.g. after months or years, even if drink many cups of plain water won’t cure). Green tea helps the above problems but it does not cure erectile dysfunction. Tips for preparing the OSK green tea to maximize its benefits. (1) Boil the tap water (2) Put the tea bag inside the cup (a cup which is medium or big size) (3) Pour the hot water into the cup. It is better that the hot water hit tea bag while you pour it. (4) Use a spoon. Stir it left to right or right to left. Left to right and back to left is counted as one time. After that from left again move to right and move back to left is counted as 2 times. Stir at least 160 times or more or 200 times until it is deep green. (5) Drink it while it is still hot or warm. Finish it while it is still warm. After masturbate I don’t recommend you to drink it if it is already cool. (6) Make the second cup and prepare it as instructed above and drink it while it is still hot or warm. Below is not my blog. It show the picture of the OSK green tea. http://myyummycruise.blogspot.com/2007/07/japanese-green-tea.html

is masterbating while you have a headache bad I havent felt right since

Posted by MJC on 02/01/2010 at 05:59

These pains are indeed intense. I have had three bouts of them over the course of the last three years. For me, they seem to be correlated with having worked (or played) for intense periods at a computer screen. I believe that the neck muscles must have been under strain for these extended periods, which triggered truly horrible neck muscle spasms/headaches during later orgasms. The solution may be to take a rest from or fix an ergonomic problem with the computer. Did anyone else notice such a link?

My husband is going on 2.5 years dealing with this. We've had 2 scans done with 2 seperate specialists and nothing! He's been on Depakote for awhile now, but it doesn't stop the pain-just dulls it. He had an episode last week that scared me to death. Doggy style seems to be the killer position here for people going through this. Typically if he feels one coming on we'll just stop, but he said this one came on too fast and he didn't even realize it was going to happen. As soon as he hit orgasm, next thing I knew he was on the floor screaming and crying....none of them have ever brought him to tears. I seriously thought he'd had an aneurism or something and was about to die he was screaming so much. I'm glad I found this forum because sex headaches haven't been brought up by any of the doctors and didn't even know it was a condition. Anyone with more info or solutions to this, please post. This really puts a strain on some marriages and we are both almost scared to have sex anymore.

I had this problem about 2 years ago for about 2 months. I think it started when I had a bad head cold, then it seemed to just go away. I think partly because I relaxed more during sex. I was getting exactly as described:- "experience a headache that increases with sexual excitement, and culminates in an explosive headache at orgasm." Anyway it went away, but about 10 days ago it has returned- again I have a nasty head cold and I just hope it goes away when the cold goes!

...have experienced this in 3 out 4 of the last times I've masturbated. Totally new and frustrating - never happened to me before. Initially I put it down to a pinched nerve or something but having read the other posts, I guess it's this 'sex-headache' thing. :-( Brilliant write-up here, and contributions from other browsers of this page made interesting reading too.

Hi all I have had this problem for last 2 years, first time I got this severe headache during intercourse I thought I was going to die as pain was so bad, went to doctors who sent me to have brain scan, results were clear and neorologist said it is a condition known as 'sex headache' which is common in young men. It doen't happen all the time which is a relief, but lately has returned with a vengance, I would like to stop this happening as it is very scarey, I will be going back to docs, there must be some help out there somewhere!!!!

Posted by Sufferer on 04/09/2009 at 05:52

I've had these - they are know as Thunderclap headaches or Coital Cephalgia for a technical name (Google it!!). BOY are they intense!! But don't worry they are not aneurysms or brain haemorrhages! Doc advised taking anti inflamitories before hand helps to relax muscles (except the one needed!!) Mine is neck problems causing tension headaches. Try to relax and move your neck if you feel it stiffen - not the one in your pants, (that should already be moving!) the one near your shoulders! Slow down a bit and change positions so you can support your neck - spoons is a good one! - Don't try doggie style - it kills when you come!! Hope this helps - a long time sufferer!!

i get what i would suppose are the same head aches that everyone else is talking about. im 19 and i am pretty sure i was 16 when i got the first one and it was during masturbation. it was in what felt like the back right of my head and in was so severe that i couldn't finish. since then i have had the same head ache and similar ones during sex. one time i believe i felt it behind my left eye but it did seem like if i slowed down or stopped for a minute it would go away. some times it would not come back and sometimes it would come right back when i started again. when i was younger it was really scary, i would get them occasionally and when it first happened i didn't know if i would ever be able to be sexually active again without the pains, but the next day it was not there and i have always been embarrassed to let anyone know except for my girlfriend because she would be able to tell when it happened because i would stop grab my back of my head and hold my eyes shut. by far the worst headache i have ever felt. seems like something i may have to just deal with but i would like to know exactly what causes it.

I've suffered from migraines for years, which are usually behind one of my eyes. Then, two years ago I had an exciting fling with a new partner and for about a week I got a sudden and intense headache at the back of my head, like the base of my skull, both when masturbating alone and when having sex with him. Sometimes it happened right at orgasm, other times it was as I was getting close. The second time I googled it and ended up in the ER to rule out an aneurysm. After about a week they stopped. Then recently I again have a new partner who is really turning me on and now these headaches are back. It's horrible because I really want to have an orgasm and it's like I'm an animal in some experiment that if I go for what I want I'm going to be punished with an electric shock or something. I have tried midrin and maxalt preventatively and they didn't work. Today I'm getting a prescription for indomehtacin, we'll see if it works. Yesterday I got the headache again but this time it was in the front behind one eye, just like my regular migraines. It's really awful and I can't wait for it to stop so I can just enjoy sex again.

I had such a bad sex headache after masturbation, that I ended up in the ER. They did two CT scans and a spinal tap. Nothing serious was found. I was perscribed Verapamil and Indometacin. Frankly, I am terrified to orgasam. I am afraid to see if the meds work, for fear of that headache coming back. Actually, it was 4 days ago and it is still hanging on. Not fun!

I just started experiencing these headaches in the last week. I've never had a migraine before and it literally felt like the front of my head was about to explode. The first time it went away relatively quickly, although I couldn't stand up and couldn't see for a little while. Yesterday the pain disipated and then came back in full force for the entire day and is still thrumming away now. The skin above my eye feels like it's been bruised to touch. Is this normal...?!?!

Posted by stephen on 22/04/2009 at 02:46

I am getting these severe headaches every single time i orgasm now. very bad times.. went to the doctor and they gave me beta blockers, they definately help dull the pain but they do not get rid of it. also the side effects such as an increase in bruising does not help my life style as i regulary practice thai boxing. but if bruising doesnt worry you that much I would recommend taking beta blockers. Right now im on indometacin and it doesnt seem to be doing a hell of alot. the only difference is i dont wake up with a headache as often. Also haven't noticed any side effects Hope this helps!

Posted by Anonymous on 20/04/2009 at 06:13

everyone experiencing these types of headaches should consult with a physician.in most cases theyre uncomfortable but harmless, but in the rare case it could be a sign of a sentinel bleed wich is a indicator of a possible brain hemmorage

I started getting headaches 4 years ago when I started dating a man that I love and am so attracted to. My headaches are at the front of my head between my eyes and they don't happen until after he pulls out... and then wham!! the worst pain ever. The last one lasted all night and I still have a headache the next day. I never get headaches otherwise. I joked with my sweety about looking up sex headaches but I didn't expect to find something so serious. I think I should see a doctor too. My blood pressure is low not high and I'm thin and in good health. Strange. Should I be more worried than some.

I have had these headaches during orgasm before. It is always when I have a pinched nerve in my upper neck. I see the chiropractor to have it ajusted and the pain is gone.

sex makes my eyes go funny, seriously it makes me dizzy when I orgasm, why?

Posted by Anonymous on 24/03/2009 at 05:59

I am an average weight but I do seem to suffer from high blood pressure. I just wonder if blood pressure medicine will help the sexual headaches.

I've had this a number of times over the last 10 years, usually in clusters over a few weeks and always when climaxing in the doggy-style position (thankfully there are other great positions to climax in!). Headache disappears in minutes but still scary as hell. Never told the doctor. Haven't had this in over a year now. My girlfriend had a series of these a few months ago over the course of a month. (Missionary position with a little vibrator). None since. We have great sex and this has been an 'interruption' to an otherwise great experience. Her headaches were also gone within minutes.

Im in great physical shape and just started having the same thing happen to me about 5 months ago. I hope it goes away it happened to me again today and the pain was so intense i thought I was going to black out. Do you think I should seriously see a doctor.

I have experienced this totally frightening headache at the back of my head on four occasions at the height of orgasm and like a number of other people have commented you do feel like your head is going to explode, the pressure build up is so very bad. My last experience was really bad and I had to stop making love to my husband, it made me cry it was that painful. I went to see my doctor the following day although I felt very embarrassed I told him everything and he explained all about it and has referred me for a brain scan which I should be going to in the next couple of weeks. He also gave me some tablets for thining the blood. Finding this site has really helped, not that you would wish it on your worst enemy, but knowing other people are experiencing the same thing really does help, that's why i decided to comment on this personal issue. Apparently it is more common than you think. Hopefully all will be well at my scan

I'am a 33 year old male who is dealing with this. It's awful!!!I got my first head ache durung masturebastion about two weeks ago. I had no idea what was going on. The head ache was so bad I had no choice but to go to the er.The last thing I thought was happening was a sex head ache!I had no idea there was such a thing so I did not mention this at the er STUPID!! This morning my wife and I ttryed to have sex and it happened again the pain is too much to bear! So I googled sex head ache for the first time. I still cant beleave this is a real condition.I thought I a brain tumor or anyourism. When I went to the er the did a ct scan with and with out contrast and it was negative thank god. Thank you for atleast letting me know I'm not crazy. I just hope this stops soon!! I really do enjoy sex and masturebastion but the thought of either scares the crap out of me. Again thanks for the info!

I've started getting these excrutiating headaches during sex about a year ago. They come and go but I've noticed a pattern where I seem to get them more often if I'm hungover. Could alcohol intensify a cluster headache? It's to the point where it's too painful to reach organisim and I feel like someone is sticking a needle into the back of my head. Are there any known medications to help prevent these? Thanks, Mitch

I am having a severe headache during orgasm, so bad that it makes my cry. I am a female. My headache is on the sides of my head and feels like it's going to explode. Usually after taking pills for my headache I start to feel better within a couple of hours. I am afraid to even think about sex, so that I won't get that pain.

I have started a new relationship and we have just begun to have intercourse, last night and the night before as I became more and more aroused a "splitting" headache took hold from nowhere, it was so bad I had to stop at once, I actually thought I was dying, Ive never felt pain like it in the front and around my eyes, intense throbbing which lasted for a couple of hours, I can still feel it slightly now, if it carries on I will be down the Doctors.

i've had these on and off since my teens. for a few days i'll get headaches that get worse the closer i get to orgasm. it feels the way i've heard migraines described, but i'm the only person in my family who DOESN'T get them, so i don't really know. Anyway, i'm just sharing to let other people know they are not alone. mine are only once or twice a year for a few days max. sometimes only one day.

I have had 4 of these attacks now in te space of a week my last one was last night lasting 8 hours until I fell asleep, there were still remnants of it this morning. The second one that I had ended with a ct scan and a lumber puncture and a stay in hospital overnight, luckily no brain bleed was found although my bp sored to 200/137 but the annoying thing is that no medication or pain relief has been offered, what can be done to ease this pain when it happens, it feels like I am going to die

I experience a headache that is located in the back of my head, increases with sexual excitement, and culminates in an more severe (almost explosive headache) at orgasm. I am in reasonable shape, I still play footie once per week, I`m a little overweight (6'3" and 104kg - honestly)and I do not have high blood pressure. This just started happening to me last week and I have seen my GP and have been referred to a neuologist (privately). I do not feel particularly stressed, I do feel tension in my neck and I can feel the tension daily now - although I am aware I may just be "tuned into it". GP says it may be the ocular nerve??? any chance?? Thanks, Neil.

I have had a few of these headaches in the past but last night was the worst one yet, it was so bad that it made me vomit, after about 2 hours it subsided enough to allow me to sleep but I have awoke this morning with remnants of the headache still there and a I'm a bit wobbly when I walk. This only seems to happen when we have sex on the spur of the moment that is very intense. Thankyou for letting me share my experience, this has been of great help knowing that I'm not on my own.

I am so glad I found this forum. I have frequent headaches anyway. Masturbation is one of my favorite pastimes, and it sucks that it is now painful. I am all of the above, overweight, stressed out, frequent headache suffer, I am scared I am going to the doctor ASAP

Thanks for the information. I experience this headache during masturbation just this time and I am very afraid. It is so painful that I stopped masturbating. I never experience this one during sex.

Posted by Doc on 14/01/2009 at 05:37

I am a physician, and actually was pretty sure what they was happening physiologically, but I did not realize just how much the description perfectly matched my own pain! I do not normally complain, but I have to stop masturbating before orgasm because the pain gets so intense.

Posted by Anonymous on 13/01/2009 at 08:54

I had the problem described. It was a throbbing pain in my head that heightened at orgasm. It was so painful I thought I was going to pass out. It then decreased in intensity but didn't go away despite pain meds. Is there anyone who has discovered a serious problem related to this symptom or is it something you can attribute to stress (I have been a little stressed lately)?

damnn i'm glad i found this forum... I experienced this type of headache in 07 when my girlfriend and i took a trip to sweden... i had never had this before that time and it only happened abot 4 four times and have not felt it since,, but i did scare the shit out of me when i went through it.

Posted by Val on 08/01/2009 at 05:17

This is a good write up. I wish I'd found this a long time ago. I took 2 months for them to finally stop. Prescribed pain meds for after onset didnt work. Other meds taken before before sex/masturbation had limited affect depending on intensity of activity. Doctors tend to look at you strangely when you have to go into details about when they occur.

Posted by Max on 05/01/2009 at 11:21

I experienced a bout of these headaches during mastabation a few months back. They were the most painful headaches I have ever experienced. Without going in to the gory details too vividly I could feel the intense pulsating of the main artery at the back of my head. At orgasm the pain at the back of my head was so intense I thought I was going to pass out. I considered raising it with the doc but was a little embarrassed at the thought. It hasn't happened again since and put it down the stresses of work and life at that particular time. If it reoccurs I will be going to my GP.

Posted by david on 05/01/2009 at 04:56

OH SHIT!!! ive had two of these headaches the last time i had sex,one was last nite. it was scary and hurt so bad right behind my eyes. after reading these articles and some others, iam scared and going to the doc tomorrow.

Posted by FW on 04/01/2009 at 08:17

I recently experienced my first headache of this type and must admit I was scared. I can only describle it as the most painful headache I have ever had which proceeded to last several hours. So scared that I looked it up on the net so was glad to find this article. Only hoping it doesn't re-occur.

Posted by Dave on 02/01/2009 at 10:20

I've just started getting these headaches in the last three weeks or so when I masturbate and have sex. It looks like a brain scan might be wise.

Posted by PC on 29/12/2008 at 08:16

Very good write up, I got a alot from this. I have these pain and I am overweight and try to do sex in quick sucession that too very quick.

Posted by Ch on 27/12/2008 at 03:30

I have recently started getting these headaches when i masturbate, and they are utterly excrutiating. They arrive within seconds and in my case last for maybe 3 or 4 hours. So far i have not been able to reduce the effect in any way, but they come and go randomly.
