    Headache during sex

Headaches during sex sound like a joke, but they are not funny to anyone who experiences them. Mysteriously, the headache may occur on some occasions but not on others, even with the same sexual technique. Sexual intercourse, or just masturbation, may bring on the pain.

    Who gets headaches during sex?

    • Sexual headaches can occur at all ages, but are most common in the early 20s and between 35–45 years of age (Neurology 2003;61:796–800).
    • Men are three times more likely than women to have sexual headaches.
    • Sexual headaches tend to occur during male, but not female, orgasm, and during female but not male masturbation.
    • Sexual headaches are also more common in people who already suffer from migraine or tension headache.

    Why the headache occurs
Sex can cause various sorts of headache.

    • At the moment of orgasm there can be a sudden, severe pain. This is probably due to contraction of some of the small blood vessels in the brain, similar to migraine, and in fact half the people with this type of headache are also migraine sufferers. This pain generally lasts less than an hour, but may be gone in 10 minutes or linger for a few hours. It may be throbbing, dull or stabbing.
    • Less commonly, as sexual excitement increases, some people experience a dull, cramping, tight feeling at the back of the head. This is probably due to excessive contraction of the muscles of the neck.
    • If you suffer from migraine, you may find that sex triggers a migraine attack. This headache will be identical to your ‘usual’ migraine. It occurs after sex, but not during sex.

Some people have only one of these headaches, but many people have a combination, so they experience a headache that increases with sexual excitement, and culminates in an explosive headache at orgasm.

Often, the headaches occur in bouts lasting a few weeks, and then disappear for a while.

Other causes of headache during sex are pills for the treatment of erection problems, such as Viagra (sildenafil), Cialis (tadalafil) and Levitra (vardenafil). Headache is one of their side effects.

What you can do about it

    • If you have severe headache at orgasm, you must see your doctor to check that there is no serious reason for the headache. A brain scan is recommended as a precaution (Update 2006;73(2);10). Your doctor may then be able to prescribe a drug such as propranolol to prevent the headache.
    • If you mainly have the dull headache at the back of the neck, make a deliberate effort to relax your neck muscles. This usually relieves it.
    • Try intensifying your sexual excitement more gradually. This works in about 50% of men with sexual headache.
    • Most people find they are more prone to these headaches when they are tired or under stress, attempting intercourse for the second or third time in close succession, or when they are using an uncomfortable or strenuous position. Try to avoid these situations!
    • Sexual headaches are also more likely if you are in poor physical shape, overweight and with high blood pressure – so if you become fitter they may improve.

I've suffered from migraines for years, which are usually behind one of my eyes. Then, two years ago I had an exciting fling with a new partner and for about a week I got a sudden and intense headache at the back of my head, like the base of my skull, both when masturbating alone and when having sex with him. Sometimes it happened right at orgasm, other times it was as I was getting close. The second time I googled it and ended up in the ER to rule out an aneurysm. After about a week they stopped. Then recently I again have a new partner who is really turning me on and now these headaches are back. It's horrible because I really want to have an orgasm and it's like I'm an animal in some experiment that if I go for what I want I'm going to be punished with an electric shock or something. I have tried midrin and maxalt preventatively and they didn't work. Today I'm getting a prescription for indomehtacin, we'll see if it works. Yesterday I got the headache again but this time it was in the front behind one eye, just like my regular migraines. It's really awful and I can't wait for it to stop so I can just enjoy sex again.

Posted by Anonymous at 27/04/2009 15:33:00

I had such a bad sex headache after masturbation, that I ended up in the ER. They did two CT scans and a spinal tap. Nothing serious was found. I was perscribed Verapamil and Indometacin. Frankly, I am terrified to orgasam. I am afraid to see if the meds work, for fear of that headache coming back. Actually, it was 4 days ago and it is still hanging on. Not fun!

Posted by Ray at 26/04/2009 11:56:00

I've suffered from headaches in the past but never during sex. These have started recently and are very worrying as they are so painful and seem to focus on the left hand side of my head. I'll being going to see the docs asap.

Posted by Anonymous at 26/04/2009 11:46:00

I just started experiencing these headaches in the last week. I've never had a migraine before and it literally felt like the front of my head was about to explode. The first time it went away relatively quickly, although I couldn't stand up and couldn't see for a little while. Yesterday the pain disipated and then came back in full force for the entire day and is still thrumming away now. The skin above my eye feels like it's been bruised to touch. Is this normal...?!?!

Posted by stephen at 22/04/2009 14:46:00

I am getting these severe headaches every single time i orgasm now. very bad times..
went to the doctor and they gave me beta blockers, they definately help dull the pain but they do not get rid of it. also the side effects such as an increase in bruising does not help my life style as i regulary practice thai boxing. but if bruising doesnt worry you that much I would recommend taking beta blockers.

Right now im on indometacin and it doesnt seem to be doing a hell of alot. the only difference is i dont wake up with a headache as often. Also haven't noticed any side effects

    Hope this helps!

everyone experiencing these types of headaches should consult with a physician.in most cases theyre uncomfortable but harmless, but in the rare case it could be a sign of a sentinel bleed wich is a indicator of a possible brain hemmorage

Posted by ouch at 15/04/2009 20:37:00

This is terrifying... It began occuring to me recently and im afraid to orgasm now. Its always been a way to relieve stress and now im consumed with tension by my fear to orgasm. If anyone know how to dull or prevent the pain it would be greatly appreciated

I started getting headaches 4 years ago when I started dating a man that I love and am so attracted to. My headaches are at the front of my head between my eyes and they don't happen until after he pulls out... and then wham!! the worst pain ever. The last one lasted all night and I still have a headache the next day. I never get headaches otherwise. I joked with my sweety about looking up sex headaches but I didn't expect to find something so serious. I think I should see a doctor too. My blood pressure is low not high and I'm thin and in good health. Strange. Should I be more worried than some.

Posted by Heather at 04/04/2009 15:01:00

I have had these headaches during orgasm before. It is always when I have a pinched nerve in my upper neck. I see the chiropractor to have it ajusted and the pain is gone.

Posted by Anonymous at 01/04/2009 09:48:00

sex makes my eyes go funny, seriously it makes me dizzy when I orgasm, why?

Posted by Anonymous at 24/03/2009 17:59:00

I am an average weight but I do seem to suffer from high blood pressure. I just wonder if blood pressure medicine will help the sexual headaches.

Posted by TresHombres at 19/03/2009 16:18:00

I've had this a number of times over the last 10 years, usually in clusters over a few weeks and always when climaxing in the doggy-style position (thankfully there are other great positions to climax in!). Headache disappears in minutes but still scary as hell. Never told the doctor. Haven't had this in over a year now.
My girlfriend had a series of these a few months ago over the course of a month. (Missionary position with a little vibrator). None since. We have great sex and this has been an 'interruption' to an otherwise great experience. Her headaches were also gone within minutes.

Im in great physical shape and just started having the same thing happen to me about 5 months ago. I hope it goes away it happened to me again today and the pain was so intense i thought I was going to black out. Do you think I should seriously see a doctor.

Posted by DMH at 13/03/2009 17:07:00

I have experienced this totally frightening headache at the back of my head on four occasions at the height of orgasm and like a number of other people have commented you do feel like your head is going to explode, the pressure build up is so very bad. My last experience was really bad and I had to stop making love to my husband, it made me cry it was that painful. I went to see my doctor the following day although I felt very embarrassed I told him everything and he explained all about it and has referred me for a brain scan which I should be going to in the next couple of weeks. He also gave me some tablets for thining the blood. Finding this site has really helped, not that you would wish it on your worst enemy, but knowing other people are experiencing the same thing really does help, that's why i decided to comment on this personal issue. Apparently it is more common than you think. Hopefully all will be well at my scan

when i masturbate i get a really bad headache at the back of my head it hurst for at-least 1/2 an hour and i do keep my neck muscles relaxed could it be because i get in there too fast.

I've started getting these excrutiating headaches during sex about a year ago. They come and go but I've noticed a pattern where I seem to get them more often if I'm hungover. Could alcohol intensify a cluster headache? It's to the point where it's too painful to reach organisim and I feel like someone is sticking a needle into the back of my head.
Are there any known medications to help prevent these?
    Thanks, Mitch

I am having a severe headache during orgasm, so bad that it makes my cry. I am a female. My headache is on the sides of my head and feels like it's going to explode. Usually after taking pills for my headache I start to feel better within a couple of hours. I am afraid to even think about sex, so that I won't get that pain.

I have started a new relationship and we have just begun to have intercourse, last night and the night before as I became more and more aroused a "splitting" headache took hold from nowhere, it was so bad I had to stop at once, I actually thought I was dying, Ive never felt pain like it in the front and around my eyes, intense throbbing which lasted for a couple of hours, I can still feel it slightly now, if it carries on I will be down the Doctors.

Posted by Anonymous at 12/02/2009 01:56:00

i've had these on and off since my teens. for a few days i'll get headaches that get worse the closer i get to orgasm. it feels the way i've heard migraines described, but i'm the only person in my family who DOESN'T get them, so i don't really know. Anyway, i'm just sharing to let other people know they are not alone. mine are only once or twice a year for a few days max. sometimes only one day.

Im taking pain killers when it happens, but really want to keep taking them all the time. the head scans sound pretty serious, Is there anything that helps prevents the headaches from happening?

I have had 4 of these attacks now in te space of a week my last one was last night lasting 8 hours until I fell asleep, there were still remnants of it this morning.
The second one that I had ended with a ct scan and a lumber puncture and a stay in hospital overnight, luckily no brain bleed was found although my bp sored to 200/137 but the annoying thing is that no medication or pain relief has been offered, what can be done to ease this pain when it happens, it feels like I am going to die

Posted by Anonymous at 21/01/2009 21:19:00

I experience a headache that is located in the back of my head, increases with sexual excitement, and culminates in an more severe (almost explosive headache) at orgasm.
I am in reasonable shape, I still play footie once per week, I`m a little overweight (6'3" and 104kg - honestly)and I do not have high blood pressure.
This just started happening to me last week and I have seen my GP and have been referred to a neuologist (privately). I do not feel particularly stressed, I do feel tension in my neck and I can feel the tension daily now - although I am aware I may just be "tuned into it".
GP says it may be the ocular nerve??? any chance??
    Thanks,
    Neil.

I have had a few of these headaches in the past but last night was the worst one yet, it was so bad that it made me vomit, after about 2 hours it subsided enough to allow me to sleep but I have awoke this morning with remnants of the headache still there and a I'm a bit wobbly when I walk.
This only seems to happen when we have sex on the spur of the moment that is very intense.
Thankyou for letting me share my experience, this has been of great help knowing that I'm not on my own.

I am so glad I found this forum. I have frequent headaches anyway. Masturbation is one of my favorite pastimes, and it sucks that it is now painful. I am all of the above, overweight, stressed out, frequent headache suffer, I am scared I am going to the doctor ASAP

    Thanks for the information.
I experience this headache during masturbation just this time and I am very afraid. It is so painful that I stopped masturbating.

I never experience this one during sex.

I am a physician, and actually was pretty sure what they was happening physiologically, but I did not realize just how much the description perfectly matched my own pain! I do not normally complain, but I have to stop masturbating before orgasm because the pain gets so intense.

Posted by Anonymous at 13/01/2009 20:54:00

I had the problem described. It was a throbbing pain in my head that heightened at orgasm. It was so painful I thought I was going to pass out. It then decreased in intensity but didn't go away despite pain meds. Is there anyone who has discovered a serious problem related to this symptom or is it something you can attribute to stress (I have been a little stressed lately)?

damnn i'm glad i found this forum... I experienced this type of headache in 07 when my girlfriend and i took a trip to sweden... i had never had this before that time and it only happened abot 4 four times and have not
felt it since,, but i did scare the shit out of me when i went through it.

Posted by Val at 08/01/2009 05:17:00

This is a good write up. I wish I'd found this a long time ago. I took 2 months for them to finally stop. Prescribed pain meds for after onset didnt work. Other meds taken before before sex/masturbation had limited affect depending on intensity of activity. Doctors tend to look at you strangely when you have to go into details about when they occur.

Posted by Max at 05/01/2009 11:21:00

I experienced a bout of these headaches during mastabation a few months back. They were the most painful headaches I have ever experienced. Without going in to the gory details too vividly I could feel the intense pulsating of the main artery at the back of my head. At orgasm the pain at the back of my head was so intense I thought I was going to pass out. I considered raising it with the doc but was a little embarrassed at the thought. It hasn't happened again since and put it down the stresses of work and life at that particular time. If it reoccurs I will be going to my GP.

Posted by david at 05/01/2009 04:56:00

OH SHIT!!! ive had two of these headaches the last time i had sex,one was last nite. it was scary and hurt so bad right behind my eyes. after reading these articles and some others, iam scared and going to the doc tomorrow.

I recently experienced my first headache of this type and must admit I was scared. I can only describle it as the most painful headache I have ever had which proceeded to last several hours. So scared that I looked it up on the net so was glad to find this article. Only hoping it doesn't re-occur.

I've just started getting these headaches in the last three weeks or so when I masturbate and have sex. It looks like a brain scan might be wise.

Very good write up, I got a alot from this. I have these pain and I am overweight and try to do sex in quick sucession that too very quick.

Posted by Ch at 27/12/2008 15:30:00

I have recently started getting these headaches when i masturbate, and they are utterly excrutiating. They arrive within seconds and in my case last for maybe 3 or 4 hours. So far i have not been able to reduce the effect in any way, but they come and go randomly.

If you have any suggestions about how to make this site even better please send them to us at info@healthpress.co.uk.
